Yelai had no idea what they were thinking. He rubbed his shoes against the ground, scraping off the brain matter and flesh from the soles, and tried to contact Uncle Zhou.
"Uncle Zhou, calling Uncle Zhou."
Although he had killed all members of the Second Squad, it didn't guarantee that Gaze wouldn't come after Zhang Yinlin and the others. He needed to regroup with them as soon as possible and share the information about Gaze.
"Uncle Zhou, calling Uncle Zhou."
He pressed the communication button repeatedly, trying to reach Uncle Zhou, but there was no response.
Yelai felt a sense of unease. Something was wrong? He couldn't believe that Uncle Zhou would cut off communication. After all, when he first provided Uncle Zhou with information about the Anomalous Entity in Hu Family Village, Uncle Zhou had insisted that Yelai keep the line open at all times. Now, it was Uncle Zhou who was unreachable.
In an instant, a piercing, chilling wail echoed from the direction where Zhang Yinlin and the others were located.
The wail came from Captain Zhao, possessed by Gaze, unleashing a terrifying scream that belonged to Rank Three's Sequence Power. Aside from Zhang Yinlin, Uncle Zhou, and the Fifth Squad Captain who could withstand it, everyone else below Rank Three was left reeling—suffering from ringing in their ears and dizziness, some even bleeding from their orifices.
If it weren't for the Fifth Squad Captain acting quickly to use his own Sequence to create a water barrier around Captain Zhao, blocking out much of the sound, it would have likely resulted in a significant loss of life among the lower-ranked Sequences.
But even so, while they could block the sound, they couldn't stop Gaze's movements. It crashed into the water barrier, breaking through it in an instant and charging toward Uncle Zhou's squad members.
Ah!!
The members of Uncle Zhou's squad screamed as their chests caved in from the impact, as if they had been hit by a truck.
Beast!
Uncle Zhou's eyes widened in anger as he unleashed his Sequence Power, entangling the entity known as Gaze. Zhang Yinlin summoned a Ghost Infant to rescue a member of the Squad.
"Everyone else, retreat! We can't help with Gaze right now," the Fifth Squad Captain said. "Uncle Zhou, does Gaze have any weaknesses?"
"No, it was only discovered last month as an Anomalous Entity, and we don't have much information about it yet," Uncle Zhou replied, coordinating with Zhang Yinlin as they engaged Gaze, all the while contemplating a way to break the deadlock.
They needed to find a way to make it possess someone else. Gaze had already taken over Captain Zhao, who was Rank Three. This was the most troublesome aspect of their situation and the reason they couldn't leave.
They were very close to the Safe Zone. It was manageable for a short time to ignore Gaze, but if left unchecked for too long, Gaze could approach the Safe Zone and potentially discover it. If that happened, the Safe Zone would be in danger.
They couldn't allow that to happen. They had to think of a solution; otherwise, they would die here too, the Fifth Squad Captain gasped.
Gaze was ultimately a Rank Five Anomalous Entity. If he fought it alone, he would be defeated in no time. Right now, they were relying on Zhang Yinlin, who was Rank Four, and Uncle Zhou's Captain-Level Sequence to work together.
However, the situation did not look optimistic. All three of them could foresee that as time passed, Gaze would kill them one by one.
"Actually, we should bring in some children and find a way to make Gaze possess them," the Fifth Squad Captain made a difficult decision.
Compared to Gaze possessing a Sequence user, dealing with a Sequence user was somewhat manageable; but if it possessed ordinary children, that would be easier to handle.
Zhang Yinlin's expression changed at this suggestion. Deep down, she was unwilling to sacrifice a young life. However, considering the long-term implications, sacrificing one small life seemed worth it compared to putting the Safe Zone at risk.
Sigh, there's no other choice, Uncle Zhou sighed in agreement.
In the midst of the confrontation, he had narrowly escaped being caught by Gaze several times. Now, they had stopped confronting Gaze head-on and opted to play hide and seek instead, with the three of them running into the houses of Hu Family Village to fight and hide.
Seeing Zhang Yinlin silently agree and Uncle Zhou's intent, the Fifth Squad Captain also stepped up, ready to take on this burden.
"I'll go call my team to bring the kids over."
"Let me handle it," Uncle Zhou interrupted the Fifth Squad Captain. "You have a chance to rank up to Level Four; the Safe Zone will still need you. I can't move up anymore, so I'll take care of it."
Just as Uncle Zhou finished speaking and pressed his earpiece to contact his team, a voice came through his earphone.
"Uncle Zhou, calling Uncle Zhou."
