She was cautious by nature, and even upon receiving the information, she would hire Yous to protect herself. While Yous remained vigilant of their surroundings, he responded to Merry.
Whether it was dangerous or not was not for him to decide; it depended on whether the full moon arrived before they did. He pointed ahead.
That was the Stone Platform where Luo Zhenxue had sacrificed Yelai's body. After three years, the Stone Platform remained unchanged, but the bloodstains on it had increased, turning it an even deeper shade of red and black.
Merry's eyes lit up at the sight. Once she confirmed there were no dangers nearby, she took a corpse bag from the mercenary and dragged it onto the Stone Platform.
During the sacrificial process, Yous and his companions remained alert to their surroundings. He had escorted people to Cthulhu Town for sacrifices more than once and had ample experience. He knew that the next moments would be the most dangerous; if the sacrifice succeeded, Cthulhu would soon emerge from the mist.
Three or four minutes passed quietly. There was no response from Cthulhu.
Yous surveyed the surrounding silence and, with his seasoned judgment, reached a conclusion. Damn it!
Merry clearly realized this as well; her beautiful face reflected her displeasure as she wore a serious expression.
"Should we leave now?" Yous asked.
If it weren't for that bit of Sequence resources, he wouldn't have wanted to come to this eerie Cthulhu Town at all. He had many unpleasant memories here. Once, he had been an explorer in Cthulhu Town and was the only survivor of an expedition outside the town. Having witnessed the Unknown Horror beyond its borders, he carried a psychological shadow regarding this place.
"Let’s wait a little longer," Merry insisted, unwilling to give up easily. She knew that responses from Cthulhu after a sacrifice weren't always immediate; sometimes, it took a while to receive a reply.
They waited for more than ten minutes, and as the half-hour mark approached, Yous frowned.
"It's almost half an hour, Miss Merry. We should leave."
"Fine," Merry sighed reluctantly, brushing off the dust from her pants as she prepared to stand up.
Suddenly, all of them, including Merry, perked up their ears and turned sharply towards the direction of the Stone Platform.
In the usually silent Cthulhu Town, even the slightest rustle felt significant.
"Captain, there's movement!" one of the closest team members exclaimed.
The disturbance was coming from outside the town, which was not a good sign; there were powerful Entities lurking beyond its borders.
Thud, thud, thud.
The sound resembled footsteps approaching rapidly.
It seemed something was drawing near from outside the town.
"What’s going on? Yous, didn’t you say that the Entities outside can’t easily approach Cthulhu Town?"
"If you’re asking me, I’d like to know why too."
But before they could shake off their unease, a more alarming event occurred.
Creak.
Creak.
In the dead silence of Cthulhu Town, every door of the dilapidated houses began to open. The sound of old wooden bolts turning echoed eerily, sending chills down Yous and the others' spines.
What was that sound? It was not the sound of a wooden plug; it was more like the sound of death gnawing at their lives.
It came swiftly after.
They saw the door of the nearest house swing open, and a long, slender hand, resembling a bamboo pole, reached out from inside, resting on the doorframe.
The entity inside was about to step out!
Yous cursed under his breath and abruptly looked up at the moon in the sky.
Upon seeing it, his expression turned to one of shock. The moon above was a half-moon, shifting between phases, not a full moon at all.
