I had someone pack up all of the jerk's belongings and completely clear out any traces of him from my home. My best friend, Xia Wan, helped me hustle around, and finally, we managed to tidy everything up.
She surveyed the towering stacks of cardboard boxes in the room and couldn't help but ask, " Niannian, are you really going to sell the house? Can you bear to part with it?"
I sat down on the floor, wiped my hands, and nodded in confirmation. "The payment has already been received; there's no turning back now. Besides, after everything that's happened, I can't stay here anymore."
Xia Wan sat beside me, wrapping her arm around my shoulders to comfort me. "Out with the old, in with the new. The next one will be better."
We exchanged smiles; after all, he was just a jerk. Who hasn't loved a few bad apples?
Once the last box was loaded onto the truck, I said goodbye to Xia Wan and headed back to my parents' home alone. As soon as I walked in the door, I saw my mom and dad waiting for me in the living room. My eyes welled up with tears as I rushed into my mother's arms and cried loudly.
I poured out my heart to my parents, telling them about Su Nan's betrayal, his new relationship, his child, and how he tried to trick me into paying off his debts. My dad was furious and shouted, "I've never liked that kid! If it weren't for you insisting on marrying him, your mother and I would have never accepted that scoundrel!"
I regretted ever falling for Su Nan, thinking I had found love while hurting my loving parents in the process. My mom asked with concern about what I wanted to do next. "You can always sell the house and buy another one. I have several properties; just pick one you like, and I'll transfer it into your name."
I wiped away my tears and shook my head in refusal, sharing my plan instead. "Mom, I'm fine financially. I bought him a life insurance policy before; that five million is additional collateral that has already been sent to the insurance company. I'm not giving that money to his family."
"Don't transfer any properties into my name just yet. My mother-in-law and Sister-in-law are difficult to deal with. If they find out I still have property under my name, they'll definitely cause a scene."
My dad slammed his hand down on the table with a heavy thud and angrily cursed my husband. "That kid embezzled quite a bit of money at work! Out of consideration for you, I didn't hold him accountable. Just wait; I'm calling right now to have our legal team gather evidence against him!"
My eyes reddened, and tears streamed down my face as I realized how foolish I had been in the past. How could I have clashed with my parents and ignored their concerns for such a worthless person?
Fortunately, I still had a chance to make amends.
The next morning, my mother-in-law's "surprise" arrived, albeit late. Staring at the police officers in front of me, I was completely bewildered and asked, "May I ask what brings you here?"
The two officers showed me their badges. "Hello, are you Ms. Song Nian?"
Seeing me nod, they explained their purpose: "Ms. Song Nian, we have received a report regarding the accidental death of your husband, Su Nan. Someone has accused you of deliberately harming Mr. Su Nan, abusing the elderly, and attempting to seize property. We need you to come with us."
Hearing the commotion, my mother rushed over without even wiping her hands dry to explain. "Officer, is there a mistake? How could my daughter do such a thing? That scoundrel Su Nan has been living off our family; he has no property!"
The officer reassured my mother and added, "Please remain calm, ma'am. Ms. Lin is cooperating with the investigation; this does not mean she has violated any laws."
My mother wanted to say more, but I stopped her. I hugged her tightly and comforted her, "Mom, don't worry. It's fine; I'm just going to cooperate with the investigation and will be back soon."
I followed the two officers to their car while my mother hurriedly called my father to arrange for a lawyer.
Once at the police station, I complied with their questioning. The officer got straight to the point: "Ms. Lin, where were you on the day of Mr. Su Nan's incident? Is there anyone who can vouch for your whereabouts?"
"I was at work; my colleagues can confirm that," I replied truthfully.
"Someone reported that after Su Nan's death, you quickly sold the property and kicked his mother out of the house. Is that true?"
As soon as I heard this, I knew it was my mother-in-law's doing.
After a moment of thought, I replied candidly, "That's correct, but officer, the house is in my name. How I choose to handle it shouldn't be a matter for the police to question, right?"
"As for my mother-in-law, you should ask her beloved son about that. Su Nan not only had an affair during our marriage but also left behind a three-year-old son. Anyone in my position would find it impossible to continue caring for his mother after his death."
The officer asked me several questions about my personal assets and recent whereabouts, all of which I answered truthfully.
At that moment, my father's company's lawyer arrived. After some negotiations, he took me to sign a document so I could leave.
While I was signing, I inadvertently overheard two police officers chatting next door.
It turned out that my husband's death was not an accident; someone had tampered with his car. The truck driver who collided with him had mysteriously received a large sum of money in his account.
He had been murdered.
