During the afternoon class, Gu noticed that the students were all abuzz, as if they had spotted some rare treasure. After so many years, the academy hadn't held a solo master apprenticeship ceremony in ages. In the past, it was customary to hold one for each graduating class, and everyone scrambled to find a good master to apprentice under. Gu Yi had caught the attention of many Ancestors upon entering the academy and was accepted into Liu Shizu's sect. Who wouldn't be envious of that?
As a result, Gu had become the center of attention, and seeing himself so scrutinized made him realize that the apprenticeship ceremony was no small matter. Under everyone's watchful eyes, he needed to think carefully about every action he took. Once he entered the academy, it felt like he was being roasted over a fire, as if the other students were subconsciously trying to keep him in check. They feared he might stir up trouble.
"Are you planning to go to the library?" Gu asked. "Why not accompany me? I happen to be going there too."
The person beside him, Gu Shenpang, seemed quite amiable and willing to approach Gu at that moment. "I don't deny it," he said sincerely. He genuinely wanted to make friends, but perhaps there was more to it.
"Have you asked your senior brother for his name?"
In the academy, students usually addressed each other as senior brothers based on their admission time. It was only after advancing from Outer Sect to True Inheritance or when out in public that they would refer to each other's titles and generations more frequently.
"My name is Chen Minghua," he replied, "with the title Gan Ying. I am the one hundred sixteenth disciple of Mok Ming Academy. I'm heading to the library to select a martial arts technique in preparation for the upcoming Outer Academy Martial Arts Exhibition in half a year."
"Then let's go together," Gu said. "I’m looking for some herbal knowledge; I have some foundational texts I want to explore."
Chen Minghua was somewhat surprised by Gu's words. He initially thought Gu would be selecting a Cultivation Method at the library. It seemed Liu Shizu must have already provided him with some good Cultivation Methods, and perhaps he wanted to take this opportunity to probe into Gu's true capabilities. But why was he seeking herbal knowledge? Wasn't that fellow skilled in alchemy?
"You're skilled in alchemy?" Gu asked.
"My master said I have a talent for it," Chen Minghua replied. "So I sought his guidance on alchemy and aimed to understand herbal knowledge and some basic principles of alchemy myself."
"That's great news! Let me congratulate you in advance, junior brother. If you succeed in your alchemical pursuits, your future could be limitless!"
Gu Xin was still somewhat surprised. In his eyes, the academy, a colossal entity that had withstood the test of time, stood tall in the Dust Realm, subtly becoming a Scholarly Sanctuary for many. It shouldn't be that they didn't clarify to the students about the potential short-term benefits and long-term harms of elixirs. Why did everyone seem like a walking medicine cabinet?
As the two walked and chatted, they arrived at the library. It appeared to be an ordinary building, but inside it was anything but ordinary.
The academy's Great Master had employed the Universal Heaven-Draw Technique within the library. This bizarre Divine Technique transformed what seemed like a small building into an infinitely looping space. The exterior of the library was protected by a powerful barrier formation; only those with corresponding strength could enter specific floors, or else they would be blocked outside the corridors.
Looking at the rows of bookshelves before him, Gu furrowed his brow. With so many books, if he didn't have someone familiar with the library to guide him, how long would it take to find what he was looking for? Although cultivators could use their spiritual sense to perceive surrounding objects, it was still not as clear as seeing with their own eyes. How could Yi Dongzi possibly memorize the location of all these books?
Just then, Chen Minghua patted Gu on the shoulder and pointed to the side. "Do you see that? Over there are the senior and junior brothers who manage the library. If you want to read something, just ask them."
They made their way through layers of bookshelves to a corner where four tables were grouped together with several benches around them. A few senior and junior brothers were seated there. As Chen Minghua pointed out, it was such a corner that Gu might not have noticed otherwise.
After greeting a few seniors, Gu asked one of them for the location of Yi Dong's Water Sword Technique so he could observe it.
Chen Minghua spoke while handing over a pill. The senior brother who had been reading wrote down a few characters and placed them on Chen Minghua's lap, saying, "You can go observe it, but remember not to take anything out of the library. Violators will be handed over to the Law Enforcement Hall for punishment."
Gu followed suit; although he didn't have any pills, he had some rare items. He casually pulled out a piece of Thousand-Year Agarwood from his belongings and handed it over. Instantly, those who had been reading couldn't help but look up, eager for Gu to let them have that piece of Agarwood.
The group exchanged glances discreetly, all focusing on Gu. He couldn't help but sneer inwardly; what was the difference between these students from Mok Ming Academy and those worldly people driven by greed? Cultivation granted immense power and longevity but also magnified human desires. Perhaps those desires were what drove many people forward.
"What kind of book do you want to see?" one junior brother asked as he picked up the piece of Agarwood that had landed farthest from Gu.
"I want to find some Cao Mu Li," he replied. "It's related to pharmacology and has some foundational techniques for cultivation."
Cao Mu Li, a practitioner of pharmacology, asked his junior brother if he could study the Alchemical Arts.
The senior brother, without further inquiry, wrote down three lines and handed them to Gu, then stored the Agarwood into his Soul Ring.
Xie Shixiong.
After speaking, Gu went off to search for the books he desired. As he left, Gu Ming sensed that three individuals were watching him with a Fiery Gaze. If he didn't deny it, those three might be seeking Murder and Treasure Hunting in the library of Mok Ming Academy.
While contemplating the actions of those individuals, he arrived at the designated spot written by the senior brother. Before him stood Seven Tall Bookshelves, filled to the brim with books on Herbal Fundamentals.
Gu began at the top, using his powerful mental strength to forcibly memorize the contents without truly understanding them. He intended to first commit everything to memory and then delve deeper into the studies when he had more time.
For cultivators, time was often the most scarce resource; yet paradoxically, it was also what they had in abundance.
