In the Lingyuan Pavilion, the six floors were designated for different tiers of society. The top floor was reserved for cultivators, while the five lower floors catered to various social classes: the first floor for commoners, the second for scholars and officials, the third for wealthy merchants, the fourth for dignitaries, and the fifth for noble families. A group of people wondered which floor they should go to.
Logically, Gu Bian, being a commoner, should head to the first floor. However, Zhang Chenyu, as a child of officials, should be on the fourth floor. Wu Qing and Wu Ji also belonged there. As for Duan Siyu? Everyone turned to him. Duan Siyu was quite familiar with his surroundings; as soon as he entered, he headed straight for the stairs. The others followed him without realizing it and soon found themselves on the fifth floor. It turned out that this guy was quite something.
Duan Brother hailed from the royal family of Southern Xiaohua Kingdom; his father was currently the emperor of Xiao Huai Kingdom. Seeing Zhang Chenyu's puzzled expression, Wu Qing explained, "May I ask your name, Miss?"
"Zhang Chenyu, daughter of the Grand Minister of Justice from Ying City," she interjected.
"Excuse me," Gu added.
Zhang Chenyu pouted and then turned to Wu Qing. "His name is Zhang Chenyu. What's wrong with that?"
"Nothing much; I just didn't know what relationship you have with Gu Brother. It was just a moment of curiosity," Wu Qing replied.
Zhang Chenyu hadn't expected that a seemingly simple-minded fellow would ask such questions. It seemed that everyone had a bit of gossip in them. She directly answered Wu Qing's question: "We're just ordinary friends. Don't overthink it, Brother Wu."
"Nonsense! That young lady clearly looks at me with affection; I'm not being dishonest," Wu Ji chimed in, causing Zhang Chenyu's smile to turn as red as a ripe peach.
"What does a child know? Can he really see anything in his eyes?" Gu smiled as he looked at Wu Ji, their gazes locking.
Wu Ji shook his head and said, "I must have dead fish eyes; I can't fool him."
That child really had no filter.
As they spoke, the five had already reached the fifth floor and found a nice spot by the window. A gentle autumn breeze blew through, refreshing them as they enjoyed a view that encompassed half of Ying City. The only downside was that from there, they couldn't see the scenery near Wangyue Tower.
"What would you like to ask for, Gu Brother?" Wu Qing inquired, while Xiao stood by, waiting.
"I seek Jin wine. There is a type produced in Meixian called Meizhang Wine. It possesses the fierceness of winter and the gentleness of Meizhang, allowing one to experience the fusion of battle and deep affection after a sip. Have you all heard of it?"
Gu Shi and Liu Lao Jiu drank together, indulging in fine wines. Even Liu Lao Jiu, the notorious drunkard, claimed that while there are countless types of Tiandong wine, none compare to the intensity of Jin wine. It burns like fire down the throat, reminiscent of gallant warriors on the battlefield.
"Can't you tell? I don't deny being a Dong Jiu person. Zhang Chenyu sometimes goes out with Prince Yong and Prince Xin, enjoying the finest wines from the No Lu Kingdom's court, yet they have no idea what lies beyond Lu State."
"Xiao, did you hear that? Hurry up with the wine."
"Please wait a moment, honored guest. I'll fetch it right away." Xiao hurried off to get the wine.
Wu Qing asked, "I wonder if Gu Brother's family does anything special?"
Although he knew that Xu Jiang Gu Family was a branch family, he didn't deny that even small households could raise outstanding offspring. Their family must be quite affluent.
"Ah, he's just a hunter; what kind of family could he have? I've never heard him mention his background," Zhang Chenyu chimed in.
"Leaving home at a young age, traversing mountains and rivers, studying a few classic texts—he's indeed talented. As for my old man, he's still healthy. Bu Luo is also a hunter; occasionally he brings back rare items from outside the Flowing Cloud Realm to sustain us," Gu explained briefly.
"The Flowing Cloud Realm?" Duan Siyu exclaimed in surprise. "Who can survive outside the Flowing Cloud Realm? That's not human territory; it's filled with monsters. Even countries like Qi State, Lu State, and Jin State have no settlements near the borders of the Flowing Cloud Realm."
"It's not as desperate as you think. My family came to the border between Qi State and the Flowing Cloud Realm with our household. Occasionally, we bring back some rare items; it's not as dangerous as you imagine," Gu replied.
Gu displayed a melancholic expression, which in the eyes of the crowd appeared to be a reflection of deep sorrow. Who would have thought that someone who seemed so carefree could have such a disheartened life? Zhang Chenyu felt a pang in his heart, recalling his previous misconceptions. It was clear to him that Gu wanted him to understand something important. Was what he said true or false?
Oh, I see. If I get the chance, I must go take a look. I've heard there are all kinds of rare birds and treasures inside.
The Nine-Tailed Fox, the Sky-Backed Ape, Bi Fang, and the Savage Demon—those creatures were probably beyond what Duan Brother had ever encountered, haha.
Gu Xiao laughed. Those beastly overlords residing deep within the Flowing Cloud Realm were not something an ordinary person could easily see. The Fox Might of the Nine-Tailed Fox might still haunt him.
As for me, please don’t let Gu Brother laugh at me. If I went to a gathering of those beasts, even a little dog would scare me half to death, Wu Ji joked as he spoke to Duan Siyu.
The servant from Lingyuan Pavilion brought five jars of wine and then set down five small cups from Lu State for everyone to enjoy slowly. If anyone needed more, just call for it.
Wait a moment, Gu called out to the servant bringing the wine. Go fetch four large bowls.
Five cups, Wu Ji reminded from the side.
Then make it five. But if it gets too spicy later, don’t come crying to me! Gu playfully kicked Wu Ji on the nose.
