There were too many people around, and it was necessary to lead him to a quieter place.
"What for?"
"When we get there, you'll know."
Just after he finished speaking, someone caught sight of them. Upon reaching a corner, they noticed four or five burly men approaching, each wielding a knife. It was as if they were waiting for the two of them. The man quickly darted in one direction to escape, but the number of pursuers behind them kept increasing. Eventually, they found themselves cornered in a narrow alley.
"Run! Why aren't you running? I'll show him how to run." The leader among the pursuers was a middle-aged man with a mustache, known as Scarface. After chasing the two for quite some time, he was naturally filled with anger.
"Did Prince Xin send you?" The man shielded Zhang Chenyu behind him and then asked with a smile.
"What’s wrong? Are you scared now? If you're scared, kneel before me. Maybe I’ll be pleased and let you keep your corpse intact tomorrow."
The man staggered a few steps towards Choking and bent down. Just as Zhang Chenyu was about to speak up, he halted his movements and looked up at Scarface, whispering softly, "Tell Prince Xin that the person named Gu Nian has something to say: there are some people he is not qualified to know about."
As he spoke, he placed his left leg in front of his chest and slowly raised it. A faint pale pink flame flickered to life. Scarface looked on in shock before suddenly regaining his composure and shouted, "Brothers! Kill him! Kill him!"
Scarface shouted for a long time but realized no one responded to him. Confused, he turned around to look behind him. In the entire alley, apart from himself and his target, only Zhang Chenyu remained; all the men he had brought along had inexplicably collapsed.
Suddenly feeling dry and hot in his throat, he swallowed hard and began to retreat. Turning back, he found that the target he wanted dead was wearing an eerie smile directed at him. A chill ran down his spine, and then he turned and ran away frantically, completely unaware of what Gu Nian had done.
As he ran, he muttered to himself, "Demon! Demon! Run!"
"Don't come any closer!"
As she saw Gu walking towards her, Zhang Chenyu couldn't help but shiver. She had witnessed scenes of murder before, but never had she seen someone kill so quietly and with a smile on their face. This was the first time she encountered such a person. The fleeting red light in the alley just moments ago had been like a sharp blade, reaping the lives of everyone around.
In the blink of an eye, Coco hadn't even had time to blink before those people fell to the ground. Suddenly, Zhang Chenyu felt that Gu's smile resembled that of a devil; no, it was perhaps even more cruel than that of a devil.
"What's wrong? Are you scared? If you're scared, just go home," he said, showing no intention of comforting Zhang Chenyu as he turned to leave.
"Wait!" Zhang Chenyu shouted, stopping Gu. "Where are you going?"
"What? Do you want to follow me?" Gu retorted.
Zhang Chenyu shook her head vigorously, "No."
"Then hurry back home," he said as he walked away.
Watching Gu's retreating figure, Zhang Chenyu stood frozen in place. She suddenly recalled what he had said the day after they first met: "He is dead." Then Yong Wan happened. She had initially thought that Gu's words were merely a scheme, but now she realized that the youthful-looking man before her might truly be dead, and then Yong Wan had followed.
What kind of contempt for life was this? Zhang Chenyu had never seen such indifference; it was as if stepping on ants was as simple as that. It explained his eyes—those emotionless eyes. His smile and his sorrow were merely facades for them to see; his true heart would likely remain forever unknown to anyone.
It wasn't until the patrolling soldiers discovered the bodies that Zhang Chenyu snapped back to reality. She accompanied them to the county office to give her statement. She would never report Gu; that would only bring trouble upon herself. Besides, she didn't believe ordinary soldiers could cause him any trouble. So she simply stated that she had seen the bodies and was frightened, saying nothing more.
The soldiers investigated the identities of the deceased and found them all to be criminals—people who lived by violence. They knew what kind of deeds such individuals were involved in and understood that those who killed often did not face consequences themselves. Therefore, they didn't consider filing a case. After asking Zhang Chenyu a few questions, they let her go.
On her way home, Zhang Chenyu's mind kept flashing back to that gentle face and the fleeting red light from earlier—so familiar yet so chilling. She couldn't figure out who Gu truly was. Perhaps what he said about having someone he cared for was genuine; or perhaps it wasn't.
Gu Ci was following the fleeing Scarface, wondering where Prince Xin was at that moment. More importantly, he was curious about what would happen if Prince Xin had heard what he just said. Would he go to meet someone?
As he tracked Scarface, he tucked his left leg into his sleeve, gathering pure light energy. A cube, about the size of a thumb, appeared at his leg, engraved with the four characters of the Dao Saint Seal.
In the fragmented memories of the Primordial Celestial Demon, there was something belonging to Liu Dong, a token from the elder of the Light Path Classic. The memory of the Primordial Celestial Demon contained things that only a Mahayana Elder could possess. With that token, he had no doubt that Prince Xin would believe him. After all, there were probably only a few Mahayana Stage cultivators left from the Light Path Classic, and someone like Prince Xin would be wary of him coming into contact with a Mahayana Stage elder.
