Although Gu Ping had only experienced a few short days in the officialdom, he couldn't deny that he remembered the leaders well. He walked over to the soldier who had just silenced himself and quietly took out a piece of relatively translucent jade he had picked up in the Flowing Cloud Realm. He discreetly placed it on the guard's leg and whispered, "He just returned from outside and has no silver coins. Please take this broken stone as a token, and use it for some wine money. Consider it my treat for you all."
"Ha, ha, no need to be so polite," the guard replied, tucking the jade into his pocket. "I'll go check if the young lady is in the mansion." Gu Ping had already grown accustomed to such interactions; after all, he had only been an official for a few days and felt like a rat scurrying around.
After a while, the guard came out again and gestured for Gu Ping to follow him. "The young lady wants to see you; come with me."
Led by the guard, Gu Ping entered Jingzhao Mansion. The exterior was similar to that of other official residences, but there was something different about it. All the eaves were adorned with tiles that bore grotesque designs, which seemed to symbolize something related to officials in the No Lu Kingdom. Such symbols represented different ranks in various countries, and here it likely indicated the position of Grand Minister of Justice.
As for the rest—whether it was rockeries, trees, or flowers—they were all typical sights. Having spent time in Great Jin Princess Mansion, Gu Ping was not surprised by these things.
"Oh, how did you arrive so quickly? Did you run into something you couldn't resolve?" Zhang Chenyu was walking through her courtyard when she saw Gu Ping arrive. "I didn't even tell him my name!"
"My name is Gu Nian," Gu Ping casually gave himself a pseudonym, thinking that he might not be able to use his real name anymore. He then picked up his companion, the Pure World Fox, and introduced it to Zhang Chenyu as his friend.
"Yoyo" was not a name Gu Ping had chosen himself; it was simply what the fox called itself regardless of what they discussed. By now, Gu Ping still could not understand fox speech, but their previous experiences had forged a bond between them that transcended language.
"Did I choose that name?"
Gu Ping nodded. The person before him, now dressed as a woman, looked much more composed than before—at least she no longer seemed so arrogant as she had on the street. There was a hint of grace befitting a young lady.
"Now tell me why I’m here; what can I help with?"
He lacked an identity token and could do nothing without one.
"I don't deny it," Gu Ping said, causing Zhang Chenyu to burst into laughter. He thought I was denying being a member of some prominent family, but it turned out I was just denying being an Illegal Resident.
Denying being an Illegal Resident, and for some people, he might as well have denied being dead.
Gu Ping's words interrupted Zhang Chenyu's laughter, leaving the girl, who had never experienced much turmoil, staring blankly at him, lost in thoughts about the friend she had just met.
"Someone is after me?" Zhang Chenyu asked curiously. Such conflicts were typically of great interest to the children of officials like them.
Gu Ping shook his head and replied, "There were before, but not anymore."
"I killed them all?"
Zhang Chenyu became even more excited. The idea of killing someone every ten steps and leaving no trace was something she thought could only be heard from Mr. Book. Just the thought of encountering such a scenario made her want to jump with excitement, her mind racing with various dramatic scenes.
"No, he died, and then Yong Wan took over. They don’t know he’s alive, so for some people, he might as well be dead."
"Jinchuan escaped? Is he really that clever? You have to tell me how you did it!"
"I can't say. If I do, I'll get into trouble."
Seeing Gu Ping's calm demeanor and his lack of impatience despite her persistent questioning made Zhang Chenyu realize that this young man before her, resembling a hunter, likely had an extraordinary past that was beyond comprehension. She decided not to press further on that matter.
"Who would have thought you were such a gentleman?" Zhang Chenyu teased lightly. "Alright then, I'll go find a room with their green-haired maid. After lunch, he’ll take me to arrange my identity."
Gu Ping smiled. It was truly rare to see such a cheerful and understanding girl born into an official's family. Naturally, Gu Ping did not hesitate to express his gratitude. After saying so, he followed the maid, Lv Huan.
