On the walls of Youzhou City, the battle flag of Great Jin fluttered in the wind, its dark red fabric making a rustling sound. Yet, there were no patrolling soldiers on the city walls. The city gates were bustling with activity, a scene that seemed to embody the essence of a nation known for its victories.
Gu Yuanji gazed at the imposing fortress known as Youzhou. The territory of Liu Xia was mostly composed of densely woven waterways, unlike Great Jin, which was characterized by vast plains. Thus, it was difficult for Liu Xia to possess such a grand city fortification.
He gently patted the head of the Pure World Fox and sighed, realizing that it was time to part ways. That time when the Fox Spirit owed him a favor was now clear in his mind; since then, the two had lost contact.
Gu relaxed his legs. The wound on his left arm, which had been pierced, had been treated promptly with medicine from Liu Lao Jiu, and now it was no longer a major issue. He shook his legs and turned to leave.
"Hey, I really hope the route I chose hasn't been exposed. We need to hurry," Liu Lao Jiu urged from beside him.
Gu adjusted his attire despite the numerous rips in his clothing. The young man had begun to develop a unique aura after experiencing hardship—a kind of resolute strength that, although not overtly visible, could not be concealed by tattered clothes.
Meanwhile, the Fox Spirit crouched at the edge of the forest, watching Gu disappear into Youzhou City. Perhaps in its mind lingered a question that had been there since their first meeting: what kind of person was he?
Most people who first encountered Gu would likely describe him as an ordinary individual with some talent but unremarkable appearance. However, they would soon notice that he had developed sharper edges and a much more determined demeanor. After that, Coco would hardly leave an impression.
What kind of person did the Fox Spirit see in Gu? It pondered whether anyone could truly understand him.
The Fox Spirit turned its head but hesitated to take a step forward. Its front limbs hovered in midair, moving back and forth repeatedly. Finally, it redirected its gaze and dashed through the forest towards Youzhou City's southeast direction—the path Gu would take to Mo Ming Academy—hoping for a chance encounter between one human and one fox once more.
Gu and Liu Lao Jiu entered a clothing store again; their clothes were in tatters once more. Despite having washed them by a small stream before exiting the dense forest, they were now beyond repair.
"Should we buy a couple of extra outfits just in case?" Gu contemplated.
"I was just wondering, when we entered the city earlier, why was there not a single guard in sight? Where have all the soldiers of Great Jin gone?" Liu Lao Jiu asked curiously.
As Gu Gangqiu began to respond, a shop assistant selling clothes interjected, "Oh, sir, is this your first time in Great Jin? All the cities in Great Jin are unguarded."
Liu Lao Jiu nodded along without paying much attention, while Gu Ze remained silent, observing quietly. The shop assistant's collar seemed to obscure something around his neck; among all the staff in that store, he was the only one with such a high collar.
The assistant continued to explain the customs and culture of Great Jin. "It's not that we're defenseless or afraid of invasion; rather, it reflects Great Jin's confidence in its strength. Which country has territories without guards? Certainly not Great Jin. This is the land of Great Jin Dynasty, Tiandong. Who would dare challenge the might of Great Jin Dynasty?"
Only then did Liu Lao Jiu glance at Gu, who nodded in agreement.
Gu interjected, "I heard that recently there have been whispers about Great Jin being referred to as the first empire of the World of Mortals. I wonder if that's true."
The shop assistant perked up at this comment. "Ah, it seems you are quite knowledgeable! That notion is indeed circulating. Do you know why Great Jin's cities are unguarded?"
Gu shook his head, indicating he didn't know. Liu Lao Jiu jumped in eagerly, "Didn't I just say? Great Jin is powerful, which is why it has no defenses—because no one dares to infringe upon the dignity of Great Jin Dynasty."
Gu looked up, clearly indicating he didn't recognize that person. Such a simple truth could be deduced by anyone; however, what exactly made them so strong was worth pondering.
The assistant leaned in closer and lowered his voice conspiratorially. "I've heard rumors—don't spread this around—but the reason Great Jin is unguarded is because of the Jade Void Sect. They have their base three hundred miles away in Jinling Mountain. Within the Jade Void Sect, there are indeed powerful beings; who would dare provoke those immortals?"
The assistant spoke with conviction, making it sound plausible enough. In reality, it seemed to be just that—rumors linking the Jade Void Sect to Great Jin Dynasty and suggesting support from the Yang Family.
In recent years, the Jade Void Sect had become increasingly active, which indicated that movements from Tai Xu Dao were growing stronger and starting to clash with entrenched traditional Daoist sects like Limitless Path and Worldly Affairs.
Gu lowered his voice and quietly asked the store clerk, "Can I see the embroidery on those two pieces of clothing?"
The clerk was taken aback, looking at the clothes where the Jade Bodhi Tree was embroidered, unsure of what he meant. Then he noticed Gu's big toe tightly gripping the middle joint of his foot and asked, "Where do you think the embroidery is worth looking at?"
"Well, don't you think it looks a bit like a phoenix taking flight?" Gu defended himself.
