Gu Ping felt a surge of anxiety, his legs trembling behind him. His left leg gripped the Firestarter, already feeling the heat of the flames. Gu Ping knew that it was no ordinary monster; otherwise, he and Liu Lao Jiu would have been dead long ago.
No skilled hunter would give their prey a moment to breathe. If they did, it only proved that the hunter was not very competent.
One step, two steps, three steps—he was now within five meters, very close. Suddenly, Gu Ping shouted, "Ah!" and threw the Firestarter at the willow tree before turning to run towards Liu Lao Jiu.
He thought no one could encounter such a monster for the first time without fear. The terror buried deep within Gu Ping erupted all at once. He hoped that shout would help release some of his fear, but it was futile. As he ran back, he didn't even notice a branch on the ground before tripping over it and crashing heavily to the ground.
Liu Lao Jiu had already drawn his weapon at Gu Ping's shout. He ignored the fallen Gu Ping and focused on the willow tree ahead. To Liu Lao Jiu, an unknown Tree Demon was far more terrifying than any fight in the martial world. He wanted to chop down the willow tree as quickly as possible.
Ten meters, five meters...
Liu Lao Jiu swung his weapon fiercely at the willow tree, but when he looked down at his blade, he froze in shock. What lay before him was no longer a willow but a withered corpse. The body had no eyes, just two hollow sockets staring back at him in horror.
At that moment, Gu Ping had managed to get back on his feet. The thick fog that had enveloped him dissipated, and the repeating images of a village vanished. Instead, he saw one corpse after another—some hanging from trees, others lying on the ground. Some corpses resembled the dried one Liu Lao Jiu had just seen: shriveled skin stretched tightly over bones, with two dark hollow sockets where eyes should be; others were even more gruesome, revealing red bones that sent chills down one’s spine. Some were still bleeding, staining the ground crimson. In the center stood a Blood-Red Willow, its branches piercing through those corpses, some even absorbing their blood.
Liu Lao Jiu pulled his weapon from the dried corpse carefully and stepped back towards Gu Ping. The Firestarter Gu Ping had thrown was now igniting a body lying on the ground, and both of them could smell the metallic scent of blood in the air.
Gu Ping could no longer hold back; as soon as he steadied himself, his stomach churned violently. With nothing in his belly to expel, he retched beside him and managed to bring up some gastric juices. Even that sour smell was less unbearable than the stench of blood around him.
Liu Lao Jiu did not react as strongly as Gu Ping but still felt nauseated. He fought against both mental and physical discomfort while keeping a vigilant watch around them, wary of any sudden attack from the Demon Tree Coco. He did not want to become one of those dried corpses.
"My lord," Chen Xiaoliu is dead.
A commander from Skytrust Guards stood beside the Seventh Prince, reporting that Chen Xiaoliu was a pawn placed next to the Emperor by Skytrust Guards, and an extremely concealed one at that. Now that pawn had become utterly worthless, which made Coco feel quite uncomfortable around the Seventh Prince.
Liu Jia reclined in a rocking chair, still fiddling with two cow-eye stones between his legs. Who did this?
The Skytrust Guards commander looked at Liu Jia with some surprise. His calm voice seemed as if nothing had happened, whereas in the past, the Seventh Prince would have been furious and thrown a fit. Cigarette Paper remained so composed that the Skytrust Guards commander even forgot to respond.
Who did this? The Seventh Prince asked again.
It was then that the Skytrust Guards commander finally reacted, shivering involuntarily, and hurriedly replied, "Reporting to Your Highness, it was Six Little Mice."
The Seventh Prince stopped his movements and closed his eyes. After a long moment, he asked, "Do you know who instructed them?"
I’m not sure; it was information hinted at by Keke.
Using murder as a cover, Liu Jia glanced at the youthful Skytrust Guards commander and suddenly shouted angrily, "Fool!"
The Skytrust Guards commander lowered his head, not daring to meet Liu Jia's gaze. "Please guide me, Your Highness."
Why hasn’t the court moved against those Six Little Mice? Can’t they really be caught? Liu Jia began to fiddle with the cow-eye stones again and continued, "No, they cannot be touched. Among Six Little Mice is Jin Mao Shu Hong Ling, who is Hong Gui's daughter."
The Skytrust Guards commander shifted his legs back. He understood now; Hong Ling being Hong Gui's daughter was enough of a reason. Who is Hong Gui? He is the master of Sky's End Tower, and behind Sky's End Tower stands Treasure Pavilion. Liu Qi is someone who can wield that incredibly sharp weapon.
Sky's End Tower, Treasure Pavilion—what lies hidden behind them is Infinite Path. Liu Jia pointed at the sky above him and then asked, "What about the investigation on that person named Gu Ping?"
Returning to the prince, Chen Xiaoliu was not killed in Tuan City by the Six Little Mice. That person's whereabouts are likely along one of the two routes heading towards the Great Jin Dynasty or Longhua Ridge.
