After listening to Xiao Qiu's drunken ramblings, Hu Ruoyun made up his mind to ensure that Sister Mona would not fall into a trap.
He tentatively asked, "Sister Mona, should I take Brother Qiu over to you...?"
Mao Na firmly refused, "No way! I'll have Sister Zhou come pick him up. Sister Zhou is his distant cousin..."
Hu Ruoyun felt relieved. "Then you don't need to find Sister Zhou. I'll take him to our school dormitory. It's the weekend, and there are plenty of empty beds."
Mao Na thought for a moment. "That works." She glanced at Jiang Qiuying and Zhang Meina. "You can take care of him; these two beautiful classmates of yours can stay with me."
Hu Ruoyun replied without thinking, "How can three people fit on your small bed?"
Mao Na said, "It's fine. My two friends from the county often come to see me, and I have a folding bed in my closet. We can squeeze in together."
The two continued their conversation, unaware that Zhang Meina was watching them with a knowing look.
Hu Ruoyun went to settle the bill, stuffing the change into Qiu Chengcai's pocket. He then fished out the car keys from Qiu Chengcai's pocket and helped him up, half-supporting and half-dragging him outside the restaurant. Mao Na helped open the car door, and they placed Qiu Chengcai in the back seat while Hu Ruoyun took the driver's seat.
Mao Na asked in surprise, "You can drive?"
Hu Ruoyun answered, "I’ve learned."
Without waiting for Mao Na to ask further questions, he turned the key in the ignition and waved at her. "I’m leaving these two classmates in your care."
The car took off swiftly toward the school.
After getting Qiu Chengcai settled on a bed in the boys' dormitory for the night, there was no further conversation. Meanwhile, at Mao Na's place, the three girls hardly slept at all.
Zhang Meina started subtly asking Mao Na about Hu Ruoyun and confirmed her parents' identities once again...
Mao Na understood her intentions but was puzzled as to why this girl who had already been “blowing” about Hu Ruoyun still cared so much about him. Although she wasn’t particularly fond of this somewhat pragmatic girl, she still praised Hu Ruoyun wholeheartedly with the thought of being supportive.
Jiang Qiuying admired Mao Na’s maturity, steadiness, and kindness. She didn’t want this beautiful “big sister” to get entangled with someone from Zhang Lingyun’s family. After much thought, she gathered her courage and said to Mao Na, “Sister Mona, let me tell you about my situation…” She went on to recount how during the high school entrance exam she was intercepted by the “Dog Young Master” in town and was saved by Brother Biao and Hu Ruoyun, clearly stating that Zhang Shusen and Zhang Lingyun fell from grace because of this incident!
Although Hu Ruoyun had never told her he was the instigator, she was certain he was involved in some way.
Finally, Jiang Qiuying said, “Sister Mona, Hu Ruoyun and another classmate are my lifesavers; I will never forget them! Hu Ruoyun is someone who won’t tolerate injustice; even if I don’t say anything, he will definitely tell you. If your boyfriend really has that kind of relationship with Zhang Lingyun, you should stay far away from him!”
Both Mao Na and Zhang Meina were shocked; they hadn’t expected Jiang Qiuying to have such a dangerous experience.
Mao Na gently stroked Jiang Qiuying’s hair and said, “Sister remembers this; I’ll listen to you!” She then turned to Zhang Meina, who was half-lying on the folding bed with her chin resting on her hand while listening to their conversation. “Little Zhang, are you paying attention? If you are, then give it your all!”
Zhang Meina's face turned red, a rare sight for her. Mao Na glanced at Zhang Meina's expression and mischievously winked at her, asking another question, "Sister Qiuying, your classmate seems unremarkable, but he’s quite mysterious, huh?"
Jiang Qiuying, however, showed no signs of cunning: "I don’t know much else. During the first and second years of junior high, he didn’t seem special at all. But as we approached graduation, he suddenly didn’t seem like someone our age anymore; he appeared so calm and composed."
Mao Na fired off two more questions: "Who did he learn his skills from? My brother has been singing his praises. At first, I didn’t believe it, but one night he... he was with my dad when a cat pounced at me. I was nearly scared to death! He tossed me aside with one hand while kicking out with the other and killed that cat on the spot. My brother also said that a group of local thugs bullied a relative of his, and he single-handedly took on eight of them and made them submit completely. And how does he even know how to drive?"
Zhang Meina perked up her ears, waiting for Jiang Qiuying's response, but to her disappointment, Jiang Qiuying replied, "I don’t know about that either... Could his skills be inherited? As for driving... does he have some powerful relatives?"
Zhang Meina somewhat agreed with this notion: her own brother was impressive; just a few years after graduating, he had already reached a respectable position. So what if she didn’t excel in her studies? With an older brother to support her, she wouldn’t end up too far behind.
They continued discussing Hu Ruoyun’s published works and book releases until the roosters crowed outside, prompting the three of them to fall into a haphazard sleep.
When Qiu Chengcai woke up, the sun was shining brightly. He opened his eyes in confusion: Where am I? Where’s my car? Where’s my girlfriend Mao Na?
Hu Ruoyun returned from her morning workout and saw Qiu Chengcai awake. She said, "Brother Qiu, you got drunk yesterday, so I brought you to our school. My two female classmates are keeping you company... Thanks for your generous hospitality yesterday."
Qiu Chengcai was eager to invite Mao Na to the county town for a movie to further their relationship. He hastily got up to tidy himself and exchanged brief greetings with Hu Ruoyun before getting into his car and heading towards the backyard of Gaoqiao Town Post Office.
"Wait a moment, Brother Qiu," Hu Ruoyun said. "I’m just going to pick up my two classmates; let’s go together."
Mao Na and the others were already there. Mao Na treated her two younger sisters to breakfast on the street while Jiang Qiuying and Zhang Meina discussed their return to the county town.
Qiu Chengcai wanted to avoid mentioning his embarrassing drunkenness from yesterday. He approached Mao Na directly: "Let’s go, Xiao Na! We can stroll around the county town and catch a movie. I’ll drive you back tonight."
Mao Na saw this as an opportunity to clarify her rejection without further entanglement and agreed. Qiu Chengcai was pleased in his heart; however, Mao Na continued, "Xiao Jiang and Xiao Zhang, aren’t you both heading back to the county town? It’s perfect timing for us to share a ride."
Since hearing that this boy was related to Zhang Lingyun yesterday, Jiang Qiuying had developed an aversion towards him and initially didn’t want to ride in this pretty boy's car. But after glancing at Hu Ruoyun again, she changed her mind: "Hu classmate, why don’t we all go together? It’s Sunday anyway; let’s have some fun in the county town."
Zhang Meina chimed in: "Yes! We invite you to our Experimental High School for an 'inspection'..."
Qiu Chengcai was only thinking about how his "goddess" had accepted his invitation; he felt elated and naturally extended an invitation: "Xiao Hu, if you’re free, come along."
Hu Ruoyun didn’t want too much interaction with this “enemy's” relative but before she could refuse, she caught sight of Mao Na’s expectant gaze: "With someone who can take on eight people around us, we’ll feel safe..."
Reluctantly, Hu Ruoyun climbed into the passenger seat without further protest.
