Chapter 137: "Misunderstanding"
"I can hand over the Cosmic Cube to you."
At the moment Sato Ryuseki uttered these words, Loki's expression froze completely. The look on his face was nothing short of spectacular. The Son of Odin turned slightly, glancing at Sato Ryuseki, who was on the other side of the dark room, wearing thick, frameless glasses. Even as the light from the Mind Stone faded and the room plunged back into darkness, Loki could still see the determination in Sato Ryuseki's eyes.
It was clear that he had made a decision.
Loki found it somewhat unbelievable. However, after surveying the people around him and assessing his position and the situation he faced, he took a step back and chose to remain silent.
But Lorna continued to stare intently at Loki.
Bai Luo had already turned around. In fact, he felt little surprise at Sato Ryuseki's statement.
The reason was simple; he knew very well that none of the people in this room were trustworthy, and not a single one stood firmly by his side. Bai Luo certainly didn't need to; the last time this guy had betrayed him was catastrophic. As for Sato Ryuseki... his relationship with Loki was purely based on mutual interests. Once those interests ceased to exist, their "friendship" would hold no value.
Thus, at this moment, he even took half a step back, his eyes darting around as if ready to seize any opportunity to escape if things went awry.
But soon, he noticed a gaze from the corner—Lorna Dane.
Our Polaris Sister was sitting boldly on the sofa, looking at the person before her with a queenly intensity, as if she were scrutinizing her hound.
Just then, as Loki took another step back, his foot failed to find solid ground and instead landed on a metal chopstick sticking up from the floor.
At that moment, Loki finally smiled at Lorna in the distance. He slowly retracted his retreating foot, standing firm and silent.
On the other side, Bai Luo had already spoken up, saying, "Did I hear you correctly? You are willing to hand over the Cosmic Cube?"
Sato Ryuseki nodded slightly. Even though they were in negotiations, he still gave off the impression of a meek and ineffectual Japanese otaku. He spoke slowly, "Let me put it this way, Loki—your companion, the Son of Odin behind you, has made contact with a race in the universe known as the Chitauri. Their intentions are quite simple: first, to obtain the Cosmic Cube and offer it to a higher existence; second, to conquer Earth and turn it into their new colony."
As he spoke, Sato Ryuseki kept his lackluster eyes fixed on Bai Luo, seemingly trying to gauge his reaction to this revelation.
However, Bai Luo merely smiled. "They clearly have no idea what kind of place Earth really is."
Bai Luo could see that Sato Ryuseki was beginning to doubt his true identity.
"Indeed," Sato Ryuseki replied with a smile. "They have no clue what Earth is like. Not only are there all sorts of chaotic beings here, but there’s also me and the Buddha Light Team. I believe neither side among us would allow Earth to become someone else's colony."
Upon hearing this, Loki began to feel uneasy. He spoke in a low voice, "Sato, what are you implying…?"
Sato Ryuseki chuckled and adjusted his glasses. "Don't worry, Mr. Loki. I'm not denying our alliance; on the contrary, I believe our alliance is just as unbreakable. But this is an alliance between you and us, not between you and the Chitauri, nor between us and the Chitauri."
Loki was not foolish; he immediately caught the underlying message in Sato Ryuseki's words. Clearly, Sato intended to use the Chitauri as pawns. Yet deep down, Loki harbored thoughts of ruling a planet and establishing himself as king. After a moment of silence, he chose not to respond further but displayed his distrust towards Sato Ryuseki.
Of course, Sato Ryuseki did not intend to regain Loki's trust at that moment; his goal was simply to keep this person in check.
Thus, he smiled again and turned slowly back to Bai Luo, continuing, "We all know that for Earth at this moment, the Chitauri are nothing but cannon fodder. And even if we let them come here, we would choose to have them land in Water City—after all, given the current situation, it would be better for us to resolve things here quickly rather than going through all the trouble of escaping and plotting elsewhere."
Bai Luo understood what Sato Ryuseki meant by "this matter," which was essentially about annihilating another Reincarnator team. Yet he feigned ignorance and asked, "So… what exactly do you want to do?"
“Those Indians, and the Thai people…” Sato Ryuseki revealed a slow and lazy smile. “If we eliminate them all, our goal will be achieved. At that point, as uninvited guests, we will leave quietly. Besides, with Water City already in such ruins and most of the population evacuated, the arrival of the Chitauri won’t mean much, right?
“And when the passage between spaces is completed and the Chitauri's advance forces enter the battlefield, I will sever the connection to that space, even personally handing over the Cosmic Cube to S.H.I.E.L.D… no, personally placing the Cosmic Cube in your hands.”
The young man with thick glasses lifted his head, his eyes seemingly shining with a certain light as he stared intently at Bai Luo.
Bai Luo fixed his gaze on this person before him, pausing for a moment before asking, “Since you understand that the Chitauri are merely cannon fodder at best, why go through with this?”
However, this time, Sato Ryuseki clearly had no intention of directly answering Bai Luo’s question. He simply smiled and said, “We are different from those you are cooperating with. I need to show more sincerity. I do harbor ill intentions, but as a gesture of goodwill, you don’t need to lift a finger. The civilians around Water City can continue to evacuate; all you need to do is watch our battle. Once the dust settles, aside from this city, we will not pose any threat to you.
“What do you think of my proposal… Mr. Vacationer?”
