Chapter Fifty: The Perfect One
The plot involving Tony Stark had indeed taken a slight turn.
After all, this was not purely the world of Marvel, and unexpected events were perhaps inevitable.
The first to detect the so-called Chatty Sniper was actually the thermal imaging device on Natasha's aircraft. Initially, they thought it was Tony Stark, who had just escaped from the Ten Rings Organization, but soon the images transmitted back from the plane made them realize that the situation was not as they had assumed.
There he was, lying on the ground, covered in a faux desert camouflage. In front of him stood a uniquely designed sniper rifle; one hand held a phone while the other gripped a receiver, intently focused on a point not far away in the desert.
Bai Luo felt suspicious upon seeing this individual and chose not to let Natasha land recklessly. Instead, they circled around him at a distance.
Natasha was somewhat puzzled. She said, "Tony's whereabouts were revealed to the Ten Rings Organization because of his uncle Obadiah Stane. This person is likely sent here to assassinate Tony Stark."
When Natasha spoke these words, her expression remained largely unchanged. At this moment, Tony Stark was not yet Iron Man; to S.H.I.E.L.D., he was merely a public figure with commercial influence. To Natasha, he was just an uneducated playboy whose life or death mattered little to her unless it affected their mission.
While they were talking, Bai Luo and the others spotted Tony Stark standing in a phone booth that jutted out awkwardly on a sand dune. On either side of him, personnel from the U.S. Military and the Ten Rings Organization were closing in on each other.
Almost simultaneously, Natasha received a message from S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. She glanced at it and said, "It's confirmed; that is Tony Stark. The helicopter over there has Rhodes in it; they should be able to ensure Tony's safety— I think we just need to deal with that sniper on the ground."
However, Bai Luo shook his head. He looked at the phone booth where Howard Stark once stood and wore a contemplative expression.
At that moment, he connected what he saw with who the sniper might be.
This wasn't a character from Marvel but rather a cold-blooded sniper from a movie who operated from within a phone booth. This high-intelligence individual disguised himself as God and had a habit of observing people before choosing a specific moment to call someone from a public phone booth nearby. Under the threat of remote sniping, he would force his target to confess their past misdeeds—what this sniper concept referred to as confession.
What Bai Luo did not know was that the sniper Tony faced was far more powerful than the one depicted in the film. In that movie, the impersonator merely possessed superior intelligence and longevity; however, this current sniper claimed that his weapon could adjust its striking intensity at will and that his phone booth could move spatially according to his desires.
This individual was undoubtedly formidable.
Despite this, Bai Luo was well aware that dealing with someone who possessed such strong combat abilities and exceptional intelligence meant that if he wanted to take action against him, he had to strike decisively.
Natasha's idea was to directly hit this guy with a missile.
Bai Luo shook his head. He slowly stood up in the plane, smiled, and said, "This guy can't be dealt with by just a missile—how about we play with him a bit?"
Natasha frowned, finding Bai Luo's suggestion less than ideal. However, she didn't know much about him; the files related to Bai Luo in S.H.I.E.L.D. were not very detailed. It wasn't that S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't want to know more, but rather that there wasn't much of a past to investigate. After thinking for a moment, she replied, "Our mission is to ensure that Tony Stark doesn't die unexpectedly in this desolate wilderness of Afghanistan while exposing ourselves as little as possible."
Bai Luo chuckled and said, "My dear Black Widow, don't worry, Tony won't die—and this sniper doesn't seem as simple as he looks. Even if you opened fire right now, I doubt you'd hit him. The chance of him retaliating and killing Tony is much higher. Even if you could kill him, as we've seen, he seems to be aiming at Tony in the phone booth right now. Who can guarantee that our bullets or missiles won't hit him when he accidentally fires and kills Tony?"
"What do you have in mind?" Natasha asked.
Bai Luo's eyes narrowed slightly. With the emergence of the Phone Booth Killer disrupting the situation, he came up with a bold plan.
This might be an opportunity.
Bai Luo currently had 189 points in hand, along with Sadako and Mizumura Memeko; there were many things he could do.
"Let's find a secluded place away from the battlefield to land, and then..." Bai Luo smiled as he mentally mapped out his plan. "Give me a phone."
Mizumura Memeko could connect to others' phones without needing one herself, but Bai Luo felt it was more convenient to have a phone in hand.
Thus, Mizumura Memeko's signature call "from the future self" was made.
When the somber and monotonous voice came through on the other end of the line, Bai Luo confirmed that it was indeed the sniper targeting the phone booth.
In this world of Marvel Comics, where even Sadako and Mizumura Memeko existed, there was nothing surprising about this person's appearance.
This time, Bai Luo didn't use his own voice; instead, he had Mizumura Memeko directly mimic the exact voice of the other person. He didn't use mental communication either; he simply opened his mouth as if he were genuinely making a phone call.
Natasha sat to the side, her gaze fixed on Bai Luo. She wasn't sure what he was doing, but she knew this might be the best opportunity for S.H.I.E.L.D. to observe and understand him.
"Hello, it's me."
The voice came from a true sniper in a phone booth. The moment the call connected, he spoke first, his tone consistently dark and monotonous yet magnetic.
"Hello, but I'm sorry, we're not the same person; you've got the wrong one." Bai Luo used a voice similar to the one he had used before, but his tone was entirely different. His opening line was also rather offbeat. "I love today's atmosphere: the yellow sand, Afghanistan, the rolling heat waves, and a world-class billionaire walking down a dead-end—Mr. Stark—it's perfect."
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line before the sniper replied, "Yes, Tony Stark is listening to this call. Mr. Stark, did you hear that? How interesting this is."
"Then, this gentleman who shares my voice, who are you?"
On the other end of the phone booth, Howard Stark was already in disarray.
