Chapter Forty-Seven: Black Widow
Bai Luo stood outside the motel, gazing into the vast night, and asked in his mind, "Sadako, can you fly?"
"I have no body; there are many ways to travel."
Bai Luo replied, "Can you take me flying?"
"Where do you want to go?"
Bai Luo said, "Afghanistan."
"…"
Bai Luo asked, "What's wrong?"
"I can't."
The awkward conversation ended with that single statement.
Bai Luo sighed quietly and began to walk down the street.
Meanwhile, in the motel room behind him, Logan stood by the window, watching as Bai Luo disappeared into the darkness.
At that moment, he heard a slightly cold voice behind him, "Do you know him?"
Logan turned around and saw Lorna standing behind him, looking in the direction where Bai Luo had disappeared.
Logan thought for a moment and said, "Twenty years ago, we fought side by side in Kansas City—I still don't know what kind of people we were up against that day, but Bai Luo... aside from having grown up, he hasn't changed much since twenty years ago."
Lorna pondered and asked, "Is he really that nameless hero from Kansas City?"
Logan nodded. "I was right there with him. I wanted to leave that place of turmoil, and he stepped forward without hesitation."
Lorna seemed lost in thought. The impact of the battle in Kansas City was significant; a non-mutant had saved a city and even became a dream figure for many young girls. Lorna could be considered part of that era and had heard about the battle, but unfortunately, Bai Luo had disappeared for twenty years and missed the chance to make a name for himself. Now, his story felt more like a legend.
However, at this moment, Polaris Sister gazed at the figure of Bai Luo disappearing into the night and murmured, "He saved a city... how could he be such a guy?"
Logan seemed to have heard Lorna's words. He thought for a moment and awkwardly remarked, "But it is indeed because of him that Eric was able to find you; the engagement... seems to be real."
...
Bai Luo sneezed.
He wasn't sure what kind of person he was; right now, he was on the phone with Director Nick.
It was already late at night. Bai Luo was alert and energetic, and Nick sounded equally awake. As soon as he answered the call, he said, "If you want to turn yourself in and hand over Strucker, I'm more than willing to accept you. I could even send Steve to pick you up personally."
Bai Luo chuckled and replied, "I want to go to Afghanistan."
Nick Fury chuckled, "I knew from the moment you called that you weren't up to anything good."
"Not at all, I'm going to Afghanistan to rescue a world-class tycoon."
"Are you referring to Tony Stark?" Nick replied. "I think what he's going through right now might not be such a bad thing for him."
Bai Luo smiled but remained silent.
After a moment, Nick continued, "I need to know if you're with S.H.I.E.L.D. or if S.H.I.E.L.D. is with you. I must know what you're doing in Afghanistan, and I will send someone to follow you."
Bai Luo said, "I suppose my trip to Afghanistan aligns with your interests, doesn't it?"
"What I'm more curious about is how you know Tony Stark is in Afghanistan," Nick admitted. Indeed, he wanted Tony to experience some things there to help him shed his playboy persona, but he didn't want him to actually die there. With the abilities Bai Luo had shown, if he arrived in Afghanistan, Tony would be safe. Since Bai Luo had brought this up himself, Nick was more than willing to go along with it.
Bai Luo smiled again and said, "I'm curious about whether Bai Chu is still alive and what exactly happened in Kansas."
Nick replied, "It seems you've heard about Bai Chu."
"Perhaps you have news of her?" Bai Luo asked.
"You can rest assured; Bai Chu should still be alive. According to the information I have—she was taken into space by some people or forces."
One of Bai Luo's speculations was that Bai Chu had been taken off Earth. However, hearing Nick say this surprised her a bit. "Who took her? And why?"
Nick said, "I have completed reports regarding the incident in Kansas—once you've finished your business in Afghanistan, it's time for you to check in with S.H.I.E.L.D."
Bai Luo smiled. Nick's news was like a reassuring balm for him; the anxiety that had been hanging over him finally eased. He knew his sister's capabilities. Although she wasn't a major character in the Marvel Universe, she was clever and adept at leveraging her strengths. As long as she wasn't killed on the spot without mercy, she would have room to maneuver. Even if she ventured into space, it might not be as dangerous as it seemed.
But space... was a realm Bai Luo couldn't yet enter.
The efficiency of S.H.I.E.L.D. remained impressively high. Soon, Bai Luo found himself on a journey to Afghanistan, but this time he wasn't aboard a commercial flight; instead, he was in a descending aircraft.
Inside sat someone Bai Luo never expected to see.
Black Widow—Natasha.
When this "heavyweight" beauty of the Marvel Universe stepped off the plane, Bai Luo couldn't help but twitch at the corners of his mouth.
She wore a tight leather suit that showcased her perfect figure, and her deep red hair added an alluring touch to her exquisite features. She was undeniably stunning.
Natasha gave Bai Luo a slight nod before extending her hand. "Natasha."
Bai Luo shook her hand and replied, "Bai Luo."
After that, Bai Luo boarded the aircraft directly. Natasha's piloting skills were quite impressive, and Nick had indeed come through by sending the latest model from S.H.I.E.L.D., which was remarkably fast.
With Natasha in the pilot's seat and Bai Luo standing behind her, the aircraft's onboard intelligence was quite advanced, allowing Natasha to navigate with ease. She asked, "Were you born in the United States, Easterners?"
Bai Luo replied, "Yes... My parents are both genuine Chinese; they just moved over from mainland China. I haven't even transferred my household registration yet."
"If you want," Natasha said, "we can help you."
"This isn't necessary. I think China is a pretty good place. If it weren't for all this chaos, I might have already run back to China with my sister from our town in Missouri."
Natasha said, "China... indeed is a good place, and it has been getting stronger over the years. However... I've always been curious about how you knew that Tony Stark was captured in Afghanistan."
"I'm a prophet!" Bai Luomian said nonchalantly. "If you've talked to Eric, you'd probably know about my background, and it was I who told Lao Wan that he had a daughter lost out there."
Natasha clearly understood this point. She exhaled and said, "So... Eastern prophet, do you think William Stryker can survive?"
"Mutants are generally quite resilient," Bai Luo replied candidly to this probing question. "As long as Strucker cooperates, doesn't cause trouble, and has a pure heart, he should be just fine."
Natasha smirked slightly and remarked, "Can I take your words to mean that Strucker is pretty much doomed?"
