Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Headache of Bai Luo
Things went even more smoothly than Bai Luo had imagined.
At this time, S.H.I.E.L.D. was still a mysterious organization, but for those who knew of its existence, what that term represented was unimaginable.
Therefore, once Bai Luo's identity was confirmed, he was immediately put on a flight to New York.
By the time he arrived in New York, nearly two hours had passed, and darkness had completely enveloped the city.
As soon as Bai Luo landed, a staff member from the airport rushed over and asked, "Are you Mr. Bai Luo?"
Bai Luo nodded slightly.
The person continued, "You have a phone call."
The call was from Nick Fury. The moment it connected, the deep and magnetic voice of the black director reached Bai Luo's ears: "It's been twenty years; you finally showed up. I thought you were dead."
Twenty years had passed, yet Nick Fury's voice remained unchanged. In a sense, he was also a "mutant." During World War II, he had taken a substance known as the Infinity Formula, which significantly slowed aging and greatly enhanced physical abilities. As long as Nick Fury continued with the injections, he could maintain his youthful vigor and keep his body in relatively optimal condition.
Bai Luo understood this and found nothing strange about it. In fact, hearing Nick Fury's voice made him feel as if they had just parted ways moments ago.
He chuckled and replied, "I’m not that easy to kill."
"Considering that you have confirmed your membership with S.H.I.E.L.D. — do you mind reporting to me where you've been for the past twenty years?"
Bai Luo followed along with the man's words, "In that case, since I'm a member of S.H.I.E.L.D., I should at least offer my loyalty. I heard Strucker is planning to attack Charles' School for Gifted Youngsters. How about I lend a hand?"
Nick Fury reacted quickly, grunting, "What Mutant School? Who is Charles? You need to report to headquarters immediately. Whether you report on where you've been for the last twenty years is one thing, but I have something very important to discuss."
Bai Luo guessed that this important matter Fury mentioned might be the creation of the Avengers. Back in the 1980s, Fury's thoughts on this were still unclear, but as time passed, his idea could only become more defined.
However, Bai Luo wasn't interested in discussing that at the moment. Just as he was about to continue bantering with Nick to get the exact location of Charles' school, he heard Sadako's somewhat cold voice in his mind: "I think I've pinpointed the place you're looking for."
Bai Luo exhaled and said, "Hold on, Director. Let me finish up here and meet my sister before I join you."
Upon hearing this, Nick Fury realized something in an instant and asked, "You know where Charles' school is?"
Bai Luo smiled and replied, "Who is Charles? What school?"
Fury was taken aback; he hadn't expected his earlier words to be so easily tossed back at him by Bai Luo. He nearly spat out blood in frustration. "The existence of that Mutant School isn't exactly a secret, but... I must warn you, as far as I know, Strucker is planning to take action tonight. If you go now, you might run into them head-on."
"Is that so? Then you should warn Strucker."
Bai Luo had already exited the airport and hailed a cab, instructing the driver to head to Charles' School for Gifted Youngsters.
Nick Fury sighed in resignation, "Alright, but you'd better either leave no one alive or ensure no one knows you're with S.H.I.E.L.D. — after all, this is an operation sanctioned by Mr. President."
"Don't worry... Do I look like a soft-hearted person?" Bai Luo squinted at the darkening sky ahead.
Upon hearing Bai Luo's words, Nick Fury was reminded of the ruthlessness and decisiveness with which this guy had pursued that werewolf years ago. After a moment of thought, he replied, "Strucker may not be a good person, but... try not to involve civilians."
Bai Luo chuckled and said, "Do mutant civilians count?"
That was the last exchange between Bai Luo and Nick Fury. After that remark, Bai Luo hung up the phone and turned to Mizumura Memeko. "Can you give Strucker a call?"
"Strucker... I don't know who he is, and I've never met him. I'm afraid..."
"It's fine." Bai Luo nodded slightly, noticing that the driver in front was involuntarily slowing down—because at that moment, an armed helicopter roared overhead, heading straight for their destination.
It seemed Bai Luo had arrived just in time; Strucker had just made his move.
Bai Luo smiled and said, "Sir, stop right here."
He intended to give Strucker a surprise.
William Stryker would never have imagined that an Eastern punk he didn't even know would choose to come all this way to trouble him right after waking from a twenty-year coma.
...
At the same time, Nick Fury hung up the phone and looked at Coulson sitting beside him. "This bastard."
Coulson replied, "I wonder where he got his information—he's been missing for twenty years and suddenly shows up now with a clear purpose heading that way."
"Fury said, 'Bai Luo—he is a mysterious figure. His file contains only a few pages from his life in Missouri, but based on the few times he has appeared and the information he possesses, he is not an ordinary child from Missouri.'
Coulson exhaled slightly and said, 'His rush to get to the Mutant School is probably for his sister—he seems unaware of what happened to Bai Chu.'
Fury frowned and replied, 'Let Logan and the others tell him. Strucker's concerns about mutants are certainly valid, but he is an extreme racist. We are in a turbulent era, and the power of mutants is equally important.'
Coulson said, 'Do you really trust that Easterners' abilities? You know, Strucker seems determined this time; I heard he even managed to take down Charles first.'
Fury responded, 'I witnessed his strength during the Kansas Incident... It has been twenty years since then; he may have become even more powerful.'
Coulson nodded, suddenly recalling something. 'By the way, it seems that Howard Stark's heir was captured by a terrorist organization in Afghanistan.'
Fury frowned again. 'You mean Howard's playboy son? Captured by a terrorist organization? Good, that's just perfect; it's about time he faced some hardship.'"
