I arrived at the ground carrying the girl on my back, first squatting next to my car, and then quietly observing the surrounding environment, finding no abnormalities for the time being. In my mind, I began to plan two routes to the supermarket at the entrance of the community. One is to pass through Building 8 from the current Building 9, and then directly cross the fountain square in the middle of the community to reach the supermarket at the entrance of the community. This route is the closest, but also the most exposed, with the highest possibility of encountering monsters or being spotted by monsters from a distance.
There is another route from the building I am in, Building 9, which involves walking past the cars towards Building 6, then past Building 7, and then around the back of Building 7 where there is a row of electric bicycles. Following this path, I will then pass through a flower bed and arrive at the supermarket's back door.
The advantage of this route is that it minimizes the risk of encountering monsters, as it mostly follows the perimeter wall of the community and passes through remote corners. However, the downside is that the route is relatively long and may require more physical effort. Fortunately, my physical recovery is good, so I don't think it will be a big problem.
I chose the second road directly and started to approach Building 6 while sticking to a row of cars. When passing the road between Building 9 and Building 6, I found three monsters squatting on the ground fighting over the body of a pet dog. One of the monsters was facing my direction, so I didn't dare to show my head directly. After waiting for a few seconds, I saw two monsters start to bite and attack each other for the pet dog's body, and the other one finally joined the fight. So I "whooshed" past, ran to the back of Building 6, and leaned against the wall to catch my breath.
At the moment when I was about to lean against the wall, I felt the girl's body pressing against the wall first, and then I remembered that the girl was still on my back. So I quickly took a step forward, turned my head to look at her, and found that her head was tilting backward, probably caused by the shaking of my body when I was running fast just now. As I adjusted my breathing and calmed my breath, her head leaned forward again, and suddenly knocked on my shoulder, her nose and mouth seemed to slide over my neck, just like before, as if she was sleeping on my back again. I found her appearance somewhat cute.
"Don't be afraid. I accidentally bumped into you just now. I will take you away from here to a safe place," I said softly, leaning my head against her ear.
In my current state, I even feel a bit neurotic myself. I know that I am carrying the girl's body on my back, and I know that she is actually dead. But at this moment, it's as if I still see her as a living person, as if she is still breathing, still with a heartbeat, just sleeping soundly on my back.
In these past few days, too many terrifying things have happened. The girl is the only human I have had face-to-face contact with in these two days. Although I know she is now just a cold corpse, I am even more certain that she is not a monster. She is a person with flesh, blood, warmth, and humanity just like me. Just by looking at her, I suddenly feel a kind of inexplicable peace in my heart. It's like a movie I've seen before, "Life of Pi." If the boy didn't have the tiger as his companion, he definitely wouldn't have made it out of that vast ocean. What might have killed him wasn't necessarily the ocean, but more likely the extreme loneliness in his heart.
I feel like I am in this state right now, with the girl on my back as if she were the tiger accompanying me, and I am in a desperate situation surrounded by monsters as if in a vast ocean. In this special environment, I feel like I have established some kind of indescribable emotional dependence on the girl, even though she is now just a corpse. Although I often pride myself on being a very strong person, at this moment, facing the extremely terrifying surrounding environment, I can't help but feel an inexplicable sense of loneliness, and the girl on my back seems to be the light and warmth for me to overcome inner fear and loneliness.
I'm actually just an ordinary person.
I took a deep breath and began to regain my composure.
There is a distance between Building 6 and Building 7, about 4 meters wide, forming an alleyway. I stood behind Building 6 and noticed a shadow resembling a person coming through between the two buildings, casting onto the community's wall.
A figure was slowly moving towards Building 7, accompanied by a distant low growl. There was no doubt that it was another monster. It seemed that although most of the monsters on the first floor had been attracted by the previous car alarm, there were still scattered monsters wandering around the neighborhood. I speculated that it should be facing away from me at the moment, so I crouched down and peeked into the alley.
Sure enough, this is a little monster that looks about sixteen or seventeen years old from the back, wearing a high school uniform. So I took out a few small stones I had picked up from the potted plants on the fifth-floor balcony and threw them at the monster, then quickly pulled my head back. The small stones jumped and rolled on the ground, making a slight "clattering" sound.
I only heard the monster growl, and I observed the shadows on the wall changing as it began to turn around. Then I pulled out the fire axe from my waist and knocked on the wall a few times, making a slight "ding ding ding" sound. Sure enough, the monster started walking towards me.
Yes, I am deliberately making noise now to attract this little monster over.
When I peeked out to observe the monster just now, I roughly estimated its height to be less than 1.7 meters. I used the fire axe to compare the height of its head on the wall.
Quickly, the sound of footsteps and low growls grew closer and closer. I leaned against the wall, gripping the fire axe tightly in both hands, and stared intently in the direction of the corner of building 6. Observing the changing shadows, I estimated the distance of the monster from the corner, and to my surprise, it stopped when it was less than two meters away from the corner. Doubts arose in my mind: "Damn! Did it figure me out? That's impossible, this thing shouldn't have any intelligence."
So I suddenly spat out a mouthful of phlegm at the corner of the alley:
"he~tui!"
It worked, and I found that the monster was starting to come towards me quickly, its low growl getting louder and louder. I tightly gripped the fire axe in both hands and raised it.
As it reached the corner, its upper body had already emerged, but before its head could turn, I instantly swung an axe horizontally. The tip of the axe went straight into its temples, blood splattering the wall. I then twisted the axe, kicked it in the stomach, and used the momentum to pull out the axe tip. It fell to the ground, convulsed a few times, and then lay still.
"Little demon, rest in peace and stop harming people in this world," I sighed silently.
