While I was thinking about these things, I had already reached the 4th floor. I stepped onto the top of the anti-theft net on the 4th floor balcony and looked down. Just as I was estimating the distance to the ground, I saw a pair of long, fair legs on the top of the anti-theft net on the 3rd floor.
Obviously, it was the body of the girl who had fallen before.
Thinking of her, I actually felt some guilt and self-blame in my heart. I always felt that I could have saved her with just a little more effort at that time, but unfortunately, things didn't go as planned.
Or maybe this is me as a human, with at least a minimum of compassion and basic humanity, which is also the most direct and fundamental difference between me and those monsters in this terrifying environment. I went down to the balcony on the third floor and stopped next to the girl's body. I crouched down to examine the wounds on the girl's body. After confirming multiple times, I found that she only had a deep impact wound visible to the bone on the back of her head, and apart from this, there were no traces of being bitten by the monsters.
It makes sense. She has been lying here quietly for a whole night. If she had been bitten and infected before, she would have already undergone a corpse change. The girl's features are very delicate, and her long eyelashes seem to be trembling slightly as they are brushed by the breeze. It's just that she fell unexpectedly at the time, and the panicked expression is still frozen on her face.
Her face was somewhat pale, her mouth slightly ajar, and her eyes not completely closed, with traces of tears at the corners. I gently closed her mouth and stroked her eyes. If it weren't for the dark red bloodstain that had already solidified at her side, I would have thought she was asleep. I turned her head and found a screw, twisted from bottom to top, under the eaves on which her head rested, with the head of the screw facing upward.
Obviously, the moment the girl fell, the back of her head hit the nail directly, causing instant death. The already congealed bloodstains covered her back and long hair. I helped her tidy up the bloodstains on her hair, wiped her hands, and then gently placed them on her abdomen. Just as I was arranging the girl's body, there was a long shadow on the external wall in the sunlight, swaying and moving. I followed the shadow and looked downstairs, and to my surprise, wasn't that the store manager from the supermarket at the entrance of the community?
I didn't expect him to... sigh.
This guy is walking towards me from where I put down the fire hose.
One foot is in a slipper, the other is bare, stepping unsteadily towards my building. Thankfully, he hasn't looked up yet, but he will eventually notice me when he reaches the fire hose downstairs.
What should I do now? I felt anxious for a moment.
If only I had a gun, I could just shoot him in the head and solve the problem once and for all. No, the gunshot is too loud and will only attract more monsters, not to mention I don't have a gun at all.
How about using a fire axe to aim at that guy's head and throw it directly at him? It looks like that guy is about twenty meters away from me, and he's still swaying and moving.
In this situation, I have no confidence in my aim at all. If I miss and hit something else, it will just alert the enemy. If by some chance I hit the target and it doesn't fall, it will roar loudly downstairs with an axe on its head. Wouldn't that be even more terrifying and embarrassing?
There is another way: I can immediately pull up the fire hose, all the way up, so the person downstairs won't be able to grab it even if they reach the bottom of the building. But the problem is, as I start pulling it up from the third floor, the hose on the ground floor will inevitably start shaking.
That guy can see the water hose swaying from far away. If I look up directly along the water hose, won't he immediately spot me? Then he'll just keep hanging around downstairs, constantly roaring. The result will be no different from other suicidal methods. I was in a dilemma for a while, feeling anxious and sweating profusely.
Just then, there was a "clang" sound, as a metal object, resembling a nut, fell to the first floor, bounced up, and hit the front of an SUV at the corner of the building, immediately setting off the car alarm. The guy downstairs seemed to perk up at the sound, and swiftly ran towards the car, even losing one of his slippers in the process, completely ignoring the fire hose downstairs. I glanced over to the car and noticed that over a dozen creatures had already gathered around it. They were even more alert than dogs, I couldn't help but sigh in amazement.
I turned back to look at the girl's body and couldn't help but be stunned. I had just helped her arrange her hands neatly and placed them on her abdomen, so how did her right hand end up stuck in the gap between the eaves and the fixed support bracket of the air conditioning unit on the 3rd floor? Could it be... I carefully observed the girl's face again and confirmed once more that there were no signs of corpse change.
So... I followed the girl's right hand and looked at the fixed support bracket for the air conditioning unit on the 3rd floor. Sure enough, there was a missing nut. The problem is that the screw shows no signs of rust or loosening. How did that nut just fall off? I've never believed in feudal superstitions, but everything that's happening in front of me is truly unbelievable.
I can only subjectively interpret all of this as the girl in front of me perhaps expressing gratitude and repaying me for saving her before. It seems like she is helping me escape from danger in some mysterious way.
So, almost without thinking, I made a very irrational but very human decision at this moment.
I decided to take the girl's body go downstairs, regardless of whether I could find a very good place to bury her properly. At the very least, I cannot let her lie exposed in the wild, subject to wind, sun, and rain until her body decays and deteriorates.
The girl's body has begun to stiffen. I helped her sit up, then put the backpack on my front, and carried her on my back. I tightly secured her to my back with a bedsheet to prevent her from slipping off. The girl may have lost a lot of blood and bodily fluids, so she doesn't feel heavy. I estimated the weight on my back to be no more than 90 pounds. Considering her height of around 1.68 meters, it's clear that she is quite thin.
Because I usually do some Weightlifting exercises, so I didn't feel too much pressure on my back when I carried her. After securing her, I turned my head and looked at the car around the corner of the house. The alarm was still ringing, and there were already at least thirty monsters gathered there. They were constantly roaring, and had already started attacking and biting each other. It seemed that a big fight was inevitable in the short term. For the time being, no monsters noticed me, which was the perfect time for me to slip away.
I began to tighten my grip on the fire hose as I went downstairs. When I reached the second floor, I tilted my head to take a glance down, estimating the remaining distance to the go downstairs position. My eyes caught sight of a slipper not far from the fire hose on the first floor, and an idea suddenly formed in my mind.
At that moment, the girl's head was resting on my shoulder, her long hair flowing gently in the wind. I turned my head to look at her and felt as if she had fallen asleep on my back. The sunlight illuminated her face, giving her an almost lifelike glow in my eyes.
