I sat on the floor in a daze, staring at the empty classroom, the air around me feeling as if it had frozen solid.
At that moment, a familiar figure appeared at the door—my brother, Zhao Yan.
He rushed in with a worried expression, and upon seeing my disheveled state, his brow furrowed. "What happened? The homeroom teacher called and said there was an issue at the parent meeting. You..."
Before he could finish his sentence, his gaze fell on my blood-stained hands, and his voice trailed off.
Before I could say anything, Zhou Ran burst in from outside, grabbing Zhao Yan's arm and crying out, "Honey, you finally made it! Look at your sister; she actually..."
She pointed at me, choking on her words.
Zhao Yan's eyes darted between me and Zhou Ran. Instead of clarifying the misunderstanding as I had hoped, he spoke to me with a hint of reproach. "What are you doing here? Didn't I tell you not to..."
He paused, seemingly realizing he had misspoken, then changed his tone. "You... how did you get yourself into this mess?"
I looked at him in disbelief, a wave of bitterness rising in my chest.
I trembled as I tried to explain but found that no sound would come out.
Seeing this, Zhou Ran cried even more pitifully. "Honey, she did this on purpose to ruin us! She drove your car and..."
Zhao Yan interrupted her impatiently. "Enough with the crying!"
He turned to me. "You should go home for now. We'll talk about this later."
"Home? Which home?" I replied with a bitter smile. "Mom has already disowned me; what home do I have left to return to?"
I pulled out my phone to call my mother, only to discover that Zhou Ran had smashed it underfoot.
I desperately handed the broken phone to Zhao Yan, saying, "The phone you gave me has been broken by her too."
Zhao Yan frowned even tighter as he saw the shattered screen. He took a deep breath, pulled out his own phone from his pocket, and dialed his mother's number.
I heard him say into the phone, "Mom, there's been a bit of a situation at the parent-teacher meeting... Yes, it's Jingjing... She... she..."
He hesitated for a moment but finally continued, "It seems like she has some misunderstanding with Zhou Ran..."
On the other end of the line, his mother's sharp voice pierced through, "Misunderstanding? What misunderstanding! She's just an ungrateful daughter! I told you long ago that sooner or later she would..."
Hearing my mother's voice made my heart ache like a knife.
I reached out to grab the phone back, but Zhao Yan pushed me away.
"Mom, please don't get too worked up..." Zhao Yan lowered his voice, seemingly trying to persuade her.
I leaned weakly against the wall, listening to my mother's curses on the phone, feeling as if I had fallen into an ice cave, my body freezing cold.
After Zhao Yan hung up, his face was ashen.
He looked at me and said coldly, "Mom is very angry. She said... she doesn't want to see you again."
Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.
I choked out, "You don't believe me either? I'm your sister..."
Zhao Yan sighed, his tone softening a bit. "I know... but..." He glanced at Zhou Ran, hesitating to continue.
Taking advantage of the moment, Zhou Ran wrapped her arms around Zhao Yan's and cried out, "Honey, look at her! She's still pretending to be pitiful! She just wants to ruin our relationship..."
I could no longer bear it. Angrily, I pushed Zhou Ran away and shouted, "I didn't! I didn't ruin your relationship! I just..."
Before I could finish my sentence, Zhao Yan grabbed my shoulders and said sharply, "Enough! Have you caused enough trouble?"
I struggled weakly, tears blurring my vision.
I noticed a few parents nearby watching us, whispering and pointing, as if they were enjoying a spectacle.
Despair washed over me as I closed my eyes, feeling as if my heart had turned to ash.
I once thought my brother would believe me and protect me, but...
Suddenly, I opened my eyes wide, shook off Zhao Yan's hand, and turned to run out of the classroom.
I didn't want to explain anymore or beg anyone to believe me.
I would use the law to protect myself; I would seek justice for myself!
I stumbled out of the school and hailed a taxi, eager to leave this heart-wrenching place behind.
My hands clenched into fists, my nails digging deep into my flesh. A sharp pain shot through me, but it brought a flicker of clarity amidst the chaos.
