I fought hard to suppress the urge to cry.
Suddenly, his phone vibrated and lit up, a new message popping up: "Don't forget the plan, don't let emotions cloud your judgment."
My hands trembled uncontrollably, tears blurring my vision.
“Linghua? What are you doing?” Shangguan Ming's voice came from behind me, tinged with a hint of panic.
I spun around and threw the phone at him. “You explain this! What is all of this?”
Shangguan Ming caught the phone, his face instantly paling.
“Darling, let me explain…” He reached out to grab my arm.
I dodged his hand, sneering, “Explain? Explain your relationship with that woman? Or explain your plans?”
Shangguan Ming's gaze flickered. “Linghua, please calm down. This is just a misunderstanding…”
“A misunderstanding?” I interrupted coldly. “Then call that woman right now and explain it to her face.”
His expression froze, a coldness flashing in his eyes that I had never seen before.
“Linghua, don’t be unreasonable.” His tone suddenly turned firm.
I looked at him in disbelief. Was this unfamiliar man really the husband I loved so deeply?
“I'm being unreasonable?” I scoffed, tears streaming down my face uncontrollably. “Shangguan Ming, what do you want? Is our marriage just a scam?”
Shangguan Ming's eyes grew complicated as he took a deep breath. “Linghua, listen to me…”
Just then, a frantic knocking on the door interrupted our standoff.
“Brother Ming, something's wrong!” A stranger's panicked voice called from outside.
Shangguan Ming's expression changed abruptly. "I'll be right there." He shot me a cold glance. "Linghua, I'll explain when I get back."
With that, he strode out of the room, leaving me standing alone, my heart in turmoil.
I collapsed onto the bed, tears streaming down my face. Was this marriage, this cruise ship symbolizing a new life, really just a meticulously crafted deception?
Outside the door, hurried footsteps and low voices reached my ears. I struggled to steady my breathing and quietly crept toward the door.
"The plan has changed; she's already suspicious," Shangguan Ming's deep voice came through the crack.
"What do we do now? Should we..." Another voice was filled with malice.
"No!" Shangguan Ming interrupted sharply. "Stick to the original plan; I'll handle it."
I gasped, my heart racing. What plan? What were they planning to do to me?
Suddenly, the sound of the doorknob turning jolted me awake. I quickly scrambled back onto the bed, pretending to be asleep.
Shangguan Ming entered the room quietly and stood by the bed for a long time.
I could feel his gaze lingering on me; that once reassuring look now sent chills down my spine.
He leaned down slightly and whispered in my ear, "I'm sorry, Linghua."
My heart tightened painfully, tears silently soaking my pillow.
I stood on the deck, the cold sea breeze sweeping away my tears. Shangguan Ming's words of "I'm sorry" felt like a sharp blade piercing deep into my heart.
"Linghua, we need to talk," Shangguan Ming's voice came from behind me, disturbingly gentle.
I spun around, fury and despair filling my eyes. "Talk about what? About your good times with another woman?"
A flicker of panic crossed Shangguan Ming's face before he regained his composure. "Darling, you misunderstand. Hu Lan was indeed my ex-girlfriend, but I truly no longer love her."
"Don't love him anymore?" I scoffed, "Do you take me for a fool? What was that text message about? What plan?"
Shangguan Ming's gaze instantly turned icy. "Linghua, there are some things you'd better not know."
That unfamiliar tone sent chills down my spine. I took a step back, my fingers unconsciously brushing against the silver chain on my wrist.
"Shangguan Ming! I'm asking you!" I trembled as I questioned, "Is our marriage really just a scam?"
Shangguan Ming fell silent for a moment before suddenly revealing a chilling smile. "I'm sorry, Linghua."
He lunged at me, and I instinctively dodged, but he grabbed my arm.
"Let go of me!" I struggled desperately, but I couldn't break free from his grip.
"Don't be like this, darling." Shangguan Ming's voice was laced with false tenderness. "Didn't we agree to watch the sea together?"
In an instant, I understood his intentions, and fear washed over me like a tidal wave. "Help! Help me!"
Shangguan Ming forcefully covered my mouth and dragged me toward the edge of the deck. "Shh, don't scream. It'll be over soon."
I fought with all my might, tears blurring my vision. The faces of my children flashed through my mind; I couldn't die, I absolutely couldn't!
