The sound of rain pattered softly outside the window as I held Xiao Yu close, with Xiao Yuan nestled beside me. Looking at their peaceful sleeping faces, my heart was filled with mixed emotions. My ex-husband had died unexpectedly, and my parents had also left me. Although I had a considerable amount of insurance money and property left behind, I was the one holding this family together, feeling utterly exhausted.
Shangguan Ming's presence was like a ray of sunshine, gentle and considerate in a way that felt almost unreal. His patience and attention towards the Honeymoon Cruise ren moved me deeply. "Linghua, you’ve worked so hard," he said, gently stroking my hair, his eyes filled with compassion. My heart trembled, as if years of grievances found an outlet in that moment.
As the sun set by the seaside, he knelt on one knee. "Marry me, and let’s protect this family together." Tears blurred my vision as my throat tightened. "I do," I heard my trembling voice say, as if I were dreaming.
On the day of the wedding, guests filled the venue with laughter and joy. Dressed in a pure white wedding gown, I felt as happy as a fairy-tale princess. But at that moment, I caught a glimpse of Shangguan Ming exchanging glances with an unfamiliar woman. That look was ambiguous yet familiar, piercing through my heart like a sudden stab.
I suppressed my unease and forced a smile. Shangguan Ming immediately returned to my side, wrapping his arms around my waist. "My bride is so beautiful," he whispered in my ear, his warm breath quickening my heartbeat. I told myself that I must have seen it wrong.
After the wedding concluded and the noise faded away, I stood alone by the window, gazing at the twinkling lights of countless homes. The feeling of happiness was gradually consumed by unease as I tightly clutched my wedding ring; it felt cold and heavy in my hand.
"Mommy, why aren’t you asleep yet?" Xiao Yuan came over, rubbing her sleepy eyes. I crouched down to embrace her. "Mommy is just thinking," I softly reassured her while feeling a pang in my heart.
At that moment, Shangguan Ming entered the room. "Honey, are the kids asleep?" His smile remained gentle, but I caught a hint of barely noticeable indifference in his eyes. It was a look I had never seen before, sending chills down my spine.
I forced myself to remain calm. "Yes, they’re all asleep." Shangguan Ming nodded. "Then let’s rest too; we’ll drop them off at daycare tomorrow before heading on our honeymoon." He said this while gently taking my hand. I managed to squeeze out a smile but felt an inexplicable fear creeping into my heart.
The sound of rain outside grew louder, as if foretelling something ominous. As I watched Shangguan Ming's silhouette, it suddenly dawned on me that perhaps this happiness I cherished was merely a carefully woven deception. And here I stood on the edge of a cliff, about to plunge into an abyss.
The cruise ship slowly departed from the port as I stood on the deck, watching the land fade away in the distance with mixed feelings swirling within me. Shangguan Ming wrapped his arms around my waist from behind. "Linghua, our new life begins today," he said softly, making me forget about that unsettling glance exchanged during the wedding.
The sea breeze brushed against me as I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to cast aside all doubts. Yet the image of that strange woman from the wedding lingered like a shadow over my heart.
"Darling, what’s wrong?" Shangguan Ming noticed something was off and gently squeezed my shoulder. I forced out a smile. "Nothing; I'm just feeling a bit seasick." He tenderly led me back to our cabin and carefully poured me a glass of warm water. Watching him busy himself around me made me silently mock my own suspicions.
However, beneath the calm surface, turbulent currents were stirring. The next morning, when I woke up, I found that Shangguan Ming was not by my side. As I got up to search for him, I heard a low voice coming from the bathroom.
"I understand. I'll take care of it," Shangguan Ming's voice came through the crack in the door, carrying a tone of coldness I had never heard before. I held my breath and pressed myself against the door. "Alright, no problem."
My heart tightened suddenly, a chill creeping up from my feet. When Shangguan Ming hurriedly hung up the phone and opened the bathroom door, he met my panicked gaze.
