The banquet had begun. The host delivered some formal remarks before inviting the Old Master Jing to the stage.
Old Master Jing, leaning on his cane, approached the microphone, cleared his throat, and said, "Thank you all for attending this banquet. I am truly grateful. Today, I have an announcement to make."
He turned to the girl standing beside him and said with a kind expression, "Xiao Lan, come here."
"Grandpa," Jing Lan obediently walked over to Old Master Jing's side.
Old Master Jing patted her hand and addressed the crowd, "I believe everyone knows that my late wife cherished Xiao Lan the most. Over the years, Xiao Lan has been studying abroad and has only recently returned home. To express our affection for her, I have transferred five percent of Jing Group's shares to Xiao Lan. From now on, Xiao Lan will also be one of our shareholders."
As soon as he finished speaking, the room erupted in astonishment.
Although Jing Lan was the adopted daughter of the the Jing Family, she was still considered an outsider. It was shocking that Old Master Jing would give her five percent of Jing Group's shares. Even the other members of the the Jing Family looked surprised.
Especially Jing Shen, who furrowed his brow and stared at Jing Lan with a dark expression.
Jing Lan noticed his gaze and looked up at him, playfully sticking out her tongue.
Jing Shen averted his eyes and ignored her.
"Alright," Old Master Jing said with a smile, "I've said what I needed to say; everyone enjoy yourselves."
After he finished speaking, the host took the stage again, saying a few words to liven up the atmosphere before announcing, "Next, please welcome Mr. Gu and Miss Xiaolan to perform our opening dance."
The audience applauded in welcome.
Jing Shen walked onto the stage with a blank expression.
Jing Lan followed behind him, wearing a sweet smile.
As they stood on stage under the spotlight, they appeared like a perfect pair—handsome man and beautiful woman.
When the music began, they danced gracefully together.
Jing Shen maintained his cold demeanor while Jing Lan smiled brightly and innocently.
Everyone watched them with eyes filled with envy or jealousy.
Li Xue also observed them, feeling an unusual sensation rising within her.
She couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something complicated about the relationship between Jing Lan and Jing Shen.
Lost in thought, she turned to look at Gu Jingchen.
Gu Jingchen was looking at her as well.
Their eyes met, and both were momentarily stunned.
"..." Li Xue blinked in surprise before quickly averting her gaze.
She didn't understand why she had suddenly been looking at Gu Jingchen. Could it be that the interaction between Jing Lan and Jing Shen had sparked some strange association in her mind?
Confused, she couldn't help but frown slightly.
Gu Jingchen watched her with a hint of amusement flickering in his eyes.
He could guess what Li Xue was thinking. She certainly didn't expect him to show up here. He looked at her and said softly, "Xiao Xue, let me introduce you to a few friends."
Li Xue glanced at him, hesitated for a moment, and then nodded gently. Gu Jingchen led her over to a group of people. They were all in their thirties or forties, dressed in designer suits, exuding an extraordinary aura.
"Gu Jingchen," one of them said with a smile as he looked at Gu Jingchen, "you finally made it."
"Yeah," Gu Jingchen nodded. "Boss Yu, long time no see."
"This beautiful young lady is..." Boss Yu turned to Li Xue and asked with a smile.
"Her name is Li Xue," Gu Jingchen introduced. "Xiao Xue, this is Boss Yu from Yu Group."
"Hello, Boss Yu," Li Xue smiled.
"Hello, Miss Li," Boss Yu replied with a grin. "Is Miss Li Gu Jingchen's girlfriend?"
Li Xue was slightly taken aback and was about to explain when she heard Gu Jingchen say, "No."
Li Xue let out a breath of relief.
"I'm pursuing her," Gu Jingchen continued.
Li Xue's heart skipped a beat. She didn't expect Gu Jingchen to say such a thing in front of others. She raised her head and shot him a glare.
Gu Jingchen looked at her, his eyes filled with laughter.
Li Xue turned her gaze away and stopped looking at him.
Boss Yu watched them and laughed heartily, "Gu Jingchen, I wish you the best in winning the beauty's heart soon."
"Thank you," Gu Jingchen smiled.
Boss Yu raised his wine glass, took a sip of red wine, and looked at Jing Lan and Jing Shen on stage. "Old Master Jing really dotes on Jing Lan; he actually gave her five percent of the shares."
"Yeah," Gu Jingchen replied casually. "Old Master Jing has always favored her."
"Indeed," Boss Yu said. "But that girl Jing Lan is quite lovable. I heard that many boys pursued her while she was studying abroad."
Gu Jingchen chuckled but remained silent.
Li Xue listened to their conversation, feeling secretly astonished. It seemed that this Jing Lan was indeed very favored. Otherwise, Old Master Jing wouldn't have given her five percent of the shares. She just wondered if she was really as innocent as she appeared on the surface.
After the opening dance ended, the guests dispersed to chat and drink.
Li Xue stood quietly in the corner, holding a glass of wine as she observed the people around her. She noticed Chen Li weaving through the crowd, chatting and laughing effortlessly.
Her gaze shifted to Jing Lan, who was surrounded by a group of young people, her face lit up with a radiant smile as she excitedly shared stories from her time studying abroad.
Then, her attention turned to Jing Shen. He stood alone by the window, his gaze lowered as he quietly sipped his drink, seemingly isolated from the world. His tall, slender figure and sharp features gave him an aloof air that intrigued her.
As Li Xue watched him, an odd feeling surged within her. She couldn't shake the impression that this man was extraordinary.
She thought about it for a moment before lifting her head to look at Gu Jingchen. He was engaged in conversation with Boss Yu and seemed to sense Li Xue's gaze, turning his head to meet her eyes.
Their gazes locked in the air. Li Xue felt her heart skip a beat as she looked into his deep, dark eyes. Flustered, she quickly averted her gaze, her cheeks flushing. Her heart raced, and all she could think about were Gu Jingchen's penetrating eyes.
Confused by her own reaction, she had never lost her composure like this before. Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm her emotions and raised her head again to look at Gu Jingchen. This time, he was no longer watching her.
She sighed in relief but also felt a twinge of disappointment. Lowering her head, she took a sip of wine to suppress the fluttering in her heart.
Halfway through the banquet, Chen Li finally found Li Xue. Upon seeing Li Xue standing next to Gu Jingchen, she paused in surprise.
"Xue," she approached Li Xue and exclaimed, "you..."
She glanced between Li Xue and Gu Jingchen, hesitating to continue.
"Cousin," Li Xue asked curiously, "what's wrong?"
"You..." Chen Li stared at Gu Jingchen cautiously and asked, "Who is this gentleman?"
"His name is Gu Jingchen," Li Xue introduced.
Chen Li's pupils suddenly constricted as she stared at Gu Jingchen in shock.
Gu Jingchen looked back at her with calm eyes.
"Lily," Li Xue said, looking at Chen Li with confusion. "What's wrong with you?"
Chen Li remained silent, her gaze fixed on Gu Jingchen, her eyes slowly reddening.
Li Xue was taken aback. She couldn't understand what was happening with Chen Li. She turned to Gu Jingchen, silently asking him for an explanation.
Gu Jingchen shrugged, indicating that he was just as puzzled.
"Lily," Li Xue said, linking her arm with Chen Li's, concern etched on her face. "Are you feeling unwell?"
Chen Li shook her head and softly replied, "I'm fine."
"Then why..." Li Xue hesitated. "What’s wrong?"
Chen Li pressed her lips together, looking at Gu Jingchen as her voice turned hoarse. "Gu Jingchen, don't you remember me?"
Gu Jingchen furrowed his brow. "Have we met before?"
Chen Li closed her eyes, tears streaming down the corners of her eyes. The person she had spent five years searching for was right in front of her! How could she describe the emotions swirling within her at that moment? She had imagined countless scenarios of their reunion but never expected it to happen under such circumstances.
She gazed at him, unable to stop the tears from flowing.
Li Xue watched Chen Li in complete bewilderment. What was going on? Had Chen Li and Gu Jingchen met before? And why was Chen Li crying?
She had never seen Chen Li shed a tear. In her memory, Chen Li had always been a strong and independent woman who faced every challenge with a smile. But now, she was crying!
Li Xue looked back and forth between Gu Jingchen and Chen Li, her mind blank.
