Yet, behind this once glorious facade lay hidden terrors unknown to most. In a relatively secluded corner, Leng Fengyang and his companions discovered a tightly shut stone door, from the cracks of which emanated an eerie blue light, exuding an ominous aura.
As they pushed open the stone door, they were met with a massive altar. At the center of the altar lay a colossal artifact resembling a land-based Colossal Beast Skull, surrounded by scattered bones and shattered offerings. The air was thick with the stench of aged blood and despair.
This seemed to suggest that this place was not originally part of the deep sea, but rather land. The moment Leng Fengyang and his companions approached the ancient altar, it felt as if they had crossed through a rift in time and space, entering a realm that belonged neither to the human world nor to the hellish otherworld.
Each stone step of the altar was engraved with ancient runes that appeared to come alive under the glow of the blue light, slowly writhing and releasing an ancient, powerful force that instilled awe in their hearts.
At the center of the altar, the Colossal Beast Skull lay quietly, its surface covered in unknown patterns that shimmered with a profound light, reminiscent of the most distant stars in the night sky—both mysterious and unsettling. The hollow eye sockets of the giant beast were deep and cavernous, as if capable of swallowing all light and hope. Occasionally, blue light spilled from those voids, resembling whispers from the abyss, tempting them to explore unknown secrets while warning them against touching forbidden things.
Surrounding them were scattered bones—some intact, others broken—curled or stretched in various postures. On these bones, remnants of tattered armor and ornaments could still be seen, evidence that this place had once been an ancient site of worship. Those offerings, whether human or beast, had once been the most precious sacrifices on this land.
The air was thick with a blend of aged blood and despair, creating an indescribable sense of oppression that made it difficult for the three to breathe.
A Yan, with her delicate sensibilities, gently touched one edge of a Rune Stone Tablet at the altar. A chilling cold surged through her fingertips as if she could hear the cries of ancient souls.
Luo Shanhe held his beloved sniper rifle beside the Colossal Beast Skull, attempting to observe its patterns and those strange runes in hopes of unraveling the mysteries surrounding this grand altar.
As the leader of their small group, Leng Fengyang remained calm. He understood well that in this place filled with unknowns and dangers, any rash action could lead to irreversible consequences.
At that moment, a deep and resonant roar suddenly erupted from within the Colossal Beast Skull at the center of the altar, causing the entire structure to tremble. The blue light within its hollow eye sockets flared brightly as if some ancient power had been awakened.
With the explosion of blue light from the Colossal Beast Skull, a layer of mysterious ancient energy enveloped the entire altar space. Leng Fengyang gripped his rebar tightly; what seemed like ordinary construction debris now felt alive in his hands, glinting coldly as he prepared for whatever crisis might arise.
"Lao Luo, A Yan, be careful! It seems we have triggered some mechanism here," Leng Fengyang's voice was steady and powerful, quickly redirecting A Yan's and Luo Shanhe's attention back from their shock.
A Yan pressed close to Leng Fengyang; her eyes reflected both fear and determination. She knew that as long as Leng Fengyang was there, nothing was impossible.
Luo Shanhe swiftly adjusted his sniper rifle's position, aiming its massive barrel at the altar's entrance, ready to face any unknown challenges ahead.
Just then, the ground beneath them began to tremble as if an invisible force was drawing in seawater from all directions toward the center, forming a gigantic whirlpool.
Accompanied by a roar, a massive Giant Octopus surged from the depths of the ocean, its body covered in dark blue scales that shimmered with an eerie glow under the altar's lights. Eight tentacles waved through the air like deadly whips, each movement accompanied by a tearing sound that sent chills down one's spine.
It was a deep-sea behemoth!
Leng Fengyang quickly identified the enemy and silently rejoiced that their trio was not facing this kind of sudden situation for the first time. Luo Shanhe, feeling a surge of excitement, fired first. The roar of the sniper rifle echoed throughout the altar as a bullet struck one of the Giant Octopus's tentacles, causing sparks to fly and severing it with tremendous force.
However, the Giant Octopus seemed largely unfazed; its remaining tentacles began to thrash even more wildly, closing in on the three. Seeing this, Leng Fengyang darted behind the stone pillars surrounding the altar for cover, skillfully weaving through them while his rebar struck like lightning, landing accurately on the Giant Octopus.
Though the rebar couldn't penetrate its tough scales, it inflicted enough pain to disrupt the Giant Octopus's attack rhythm. A Yan hid behind a pillar; despite her fear, she didn't remain idle. She pulled out several bottles of specially formulated spray from her backpack—potions she had concocted based on Old Cabbage Head's teachings, designed to relieve pain and itching with a strong numbing effect.
She seized the moment and tossed one to Leng Fengyang, saying, "A-Feng, use this on the monster's eyes or wounds."
Leng Fengyang caught the spray and, channeling his strength through the rebar, leaped into the air to spray it directly into the Giant Octopus's eyes. The creature's vitality quickly diminished as it was hit, causing its offensive momentum to slow.
Seeing this opportunity, Leng Fengyang knew he couldn't hesitate. He successfully dodged once more and circled behind the Giant Octopus, where it was most vulnerable—its heart lay there. Taking a deep breath, he gathered all his strength in mid-air; his rebar gleamed like a sword as he thrust it into the Giant Octopus's body, striking at its vital point.
A deafening wail shattered the tranquility of the seabed as the enormous creature thrashed violently before finally sinking helplessly to the ocean floor. As it fell, the turbulent waters gradually calmed around the altar.
Witnessing this scene, Leng Fengyang felt a sense of relief wash over him; however, an even stronger sense of impending danger quietly arose within him, warning that their true challenge had yet to come.
The surrounding waters began to churn ominously. From deep beneath the ocean floor, an indescribable energy was gathering stealthily, stirring restlessly. In the darkness below, magma surged violently at the seabed accompanied by a deep and powerful roar that echoed like a beast's growl, heralding an unprecedented disaster—a volcanic eruption was imminent.
"We need to get out of here," A Yan said urgently, fully aware that the threat posed by an underwater volcano far exceeded that of one on land.
"A-Feng, we must return to the submersible immediately; it's our only way out!"
Luo Shanhe shouldered his sniper rifle and turned to sprint away.
"Wait!"
Leng Fengyang suddenly halted as if sensing something unusual.
