The Deep Sea Low Temperature Zone not only tests the performance limits of the Submersible but also poses a severe challenge to human physiological functions.
It seems we need to make some preparations. Leng Fengyang maneuvered the Submersible while contemplating countermeasures. As the leader of the team, he understood that any hint of panic at this critical moment could become a fatal trigger.
A Yan took out some heat packs from her backpack, which she had specially prepared for those uncomfortable days each month. As she distributed them, she explained, "If only we had the thermal jackets from the tank, it would be great. We could stick them on our bellies to fend off the cold to some extent."
"A-Feng, do you think we can still see the tank? That’s where all our belongings are," she added anxiously.
Luo Shanhe was checking the Submersible's temperature control system, ensuring all heating devices were in optimal working condition. He knew that the Submersible was their only refuge; if the temperature control system failed, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"You’re thinking about those fire sticks on the vehicle, aren’t you?" Leng Fengyang remarked knowingly. He understood Luo Shanhe's passion for firearms; if he had to choose between a gun and a woman, he would unhesitatingly pick the gun.
After completing his checks, Luo Shanhe confirmed everything was normal but added, "We must prepare for the worst. In case of an emergency, we need to activate the Emergency Heat Source immediately." He was a veteran and had some understanding of devices like the Submersible.
"You’re right, Lao Luo. The deep sea is far more complex and variable than we imagine, especially in this low-temperature environment. It poses a significant test for both the Submersible and our physiological limits," Leng Fengyang said solemnly. He knew that in this deep blue realm fully explored by humans, even a minor oversight could lead to irreversible consequences.
"So far, all indicators are within safe ranges, but the temperature in the deep sea drops rapidly. We must remain vigilant," A Yan said as she sat next to Leng Fengyang, watching the data flashing on the pale blue screen that reflected key information about the surrounding water's temperature, pressure, and oxygen levels.
"The Emergency Heat Source has been set up. Once the external temperature of the Submersible drops to a critical level, it will automatically activate to provide necessary warmth for our survival pod," she continued.
Luo Shanhe was checking emergency equipment while reporting, "At the same time, I’ve inspected all life-saving devices to ensure we can evacuate quickly in an emergency."
Leng Fengyang nodded, his gaze still fixed on the various data on the screen, his brow slightly furrowed as if pondering deeper issues.
"Lao Luo, based on your experience, can you confirm that all equipment will function properly under extreme conditions? The deep-sea environment is much more complex than we anticipated; especially in this area of knowledge, even a small malfunction could be fatal."
Luo Shanhe paused his actions and looked up at Leng Fengyang with a glimmer of confidence in his eyes as he nodded and replied, "Yes, A-Feng. This should be similar to an Orca Submersible. If we consider specifications like this one—it's about 20 meters long with a diameter of 3 meters and weighs 30 tons. It can dive deeper than 1,000 meters and uses lithium-ion batteries for full electric propulsion. While moving on the surface, its batteries are charged by a diesel generator. Its maximum underwater speed is 5 knots with a cruising speed of about 3 knots. At this speed, it can cover 1,000 nautical miles and has an operational duration spanning several months."
It was evident that Luo Shanhe was very knowledgeable about military equipment and felt immensely confident. He continued, "During my time in the military, I experienced numerous practical drills where it performed exceptionally well in low-temperature environments; it was highly sought after by deep-sea enthusiasts."
With Luo Shanhe's comprehensive introduction, Leng Fengyang gained some understanding of this Submersible's operation but remained puzzled about its origins. He asked, "If it's so impressive, why was it abandoned in this deep sea?"
As soon as Leng Fengyang finished speaking, a complex expression crossed Luo Shanhe's face. He slowly explained: "This Submersible was once a pinnacle of deep-sea exploration technology—a fusion of cutting-edge science and countless efforts. However, during an expedition into previously unexplored waters, it encountered unprecedented disasters—a sudden underwater volcanic eruption. Although it narrowly escaped destruction due to its powerful performance, its core systems were severely damaged and could no longer support its return. Thus, it was forced to remain stranded in these depths until we came across it; perhaps it's fate."
At that moment, a faint alarm suddenly sounded from the control panel, and the data on the screen indicated that the temperature in a nearby sea area was abnormally low, far below the normal deep-sea temperature range.
Leng Fengyang reacted swiftly, his fingers dancing over the control panel as he adjusted the course of the Submersible, deciding to approach the anomalous area for investigation.
"It seems our escape is going to be much more thrilling than expected," Leng Fengyang said half-jokingly, trying to ease the tense atmosphere, though his eyes were filled with seriousness.
As the Submersible slowly approached, a faint light filtered through the thick seawater, illuminating what lay ahead.
It was a structure, eroded by time yet still majestic, quietly resting on the ocean floor as if telling tales of ancient history. The surface of the building was covered with various marine life; corals and seaweed intertwined to create natural murals, while the outline of the structure revealed craftsmanship and design that belonged to another era.
"This is..." A Yan's voice trembled with surprise; she could hardly believe her eyes.
"Deep-sea ruins," Leng Fengyang mused. Despite knowing nothing about this architectural complex slumbering beneath the waves, he did not hesitate to accelerate the Submersible's speed, gradually drawing closer to the mysterious building.
Upon entering the interior of the structure, they were astonished to find that there was no seawater inside; instead, it was a vast open space, reminiscent of a palace forgotten by time.
The walls around them were adorned with strange carvings—intricate geometric patterns and scenes depicting ancient life—each stroke revealing an ancient and mysterious essence that did not belong to this world.
Leng Fengyang led them out of the Submersible into the expansive hall. He noticed that although the outside was frigid deep sea, this place felt unusually warm, as if some unknown force was maintaining the temperature of this space.
As they ventured deeper, they discovered remnants of ancient relics: broken statues, shattered pottery, and what appeared to be remnants of some mechanical devices. These artifacts lay silently as if narrating a tale of a long-lost glorious history.
