The anomaly of humanity may be an irresistible natural disaster. The transformation of corpses into manipulated puppets, however, is undoubtedly the result of malicious individuals, leading to a deep catastrophe. Behind this, there may very well be unspeakable conspiracies and intrigue.
Leng Fengyang speculated that this series of events was intricately connected to Zhang Wei, especially considering Zhang Wei's mysterious appearance in Li Ming's laboratory last time, which made this suspicion particularly reasonable and impossible to ignore. The person before him had been sent by Li Ming; if he could pry open his mouth, all would be revealed. What was Li Ming's purpose in developing this drug to control these corpses?
Eager to uncover the truth, Leng Fengyang was about to speak when he noticed the man's lips suddenly frothing. Then, his body stiffened, and his neck twisted sharply as he unhesitatingly chose to end his own life.
A Yan quickly stepped forward and gently placed her fingers on the man's carotid artery. After a moment, she shook her head helplessly and whispered, "It's too late; there's no saving him now." It seemed that those cultivated by Li Ming were all a group of death-seeking warriors.
Luo Shanhe frowned at the scene, frustration evident in his expression. He felt a deep sense of regret over this interrogation; he had hoped to extract some clues about Li Ming's plans from this man, but instead, they had been denied even the chance to converse before he made his decision.
Before they could lament their misfortune, the darkness was pierced by the relentless low growls of the corpses. These entangled monsters were like an unshakeable plague, closely following them and impossible to escape.
"We need to go," Leng Fengyang said, gazing at the lifeless bodies on the ground. His heart sank as he realized that the Underground City was about to fall; they had to find a way out quickly if they wanted any chance of survival above ground.
As Luo Shanhe hurriedly retreated, his gaze swept over the scattered firearms that had once been his prized possessions. A complex smile crept onto his lips as he murmured to himself, "Greedy people take my things; now look where it has led them—losing their lives. What a pity."
"Lao Luo, hurry up! If we don't leave now, it will be too late!" A Yan urged Luo Shanhe to move faster. He complied and quickly followed her lead as the three of them vanished near the Dark River.
Once again left with just the three of them, Leng Fengyang felt a pang of emotion. Humanity faced immense threats to its survival; indeed, human civilization might be on the brink of destruction.
He pulled out the notebook he had hidden in his pocket and examined the map of the Underground City under dim light. After a moment of contemplation, he remarked, "The escape routes are clearly marked here, yet they lead directly into the raging waters of the Dark River. Is someone deliberately misleading us?"
A Yan's reminder struck him like a bell tolling in the morning and evening, jolting Leng Fengyang awake. He realized that this easily obtained notebook had become their greatest point of suspicion, indicating a carefully orchestrated deception and test. Perhaps there was some unknown conspiracy lurking behind it all.
"A Yan, you are right," Leng Fengyang said slowly, his voice deep and powerful. "Before anything else, we need more evidence to support this hypothesis. After all, the history of this Underground City is long-standing; the map may have gone through multiple eras of changes—river alterations and natural shifts are all possible factors."
"A-Feng," Luo Shanhe said, his concern evident, "even if we find a way out, how are we going to get that tank out? Just leaving it behind seems like such a waste."
Luo Shanhe was fixated on the vehicle, especially with the trunk filled with supplies. He was determined not to give up on it.
"Who said we're leaving it behind? That's all our belongings," Leng Fengyang replied with a slight smile, his eyes sparkling with wisdom and confidence. He patted Luo Shanhe's shoulder reassuringly. "Lao Luo, why are you in such a hurry? Since we managed to get in here, there must be a way to take the tank and those precious supplies with us."
He paused for a moment, surveying their surroundings before continuing. "Right now, we need to understand the structure of the Underground City, especially those ancient passages or hidden mechanisms that might exist. Although the Underground City is complex, it often conceals the wisdom and clues left by those who came before us."
Listening to Leng Fengyang's words, Luo Shanhe felt his worries dissipate like morning mist under the sun. Relaxing his expression, he asked, "A-Feng, do you think this Dark Side of the Moon could be similar to this Underground City?"
"Would you want to hide down here every day?"
Luo Shanhe was deeply captivated by the legend of the Safe Zone—a place hailed as humanity's last Eden. According to the tales, there was no smoke of war, no depletion of resources, only endless tranquility and harmony, as if nature itself offered humanity a final gentle embrace.
He imagined the distant Dark Side of the Moon as a scene that stirred his heart:
Moonlight gently pierced through thin clouds, casting its glow over vast lands embraced by soft nightfall. Unlike the chaos and clamor of the end times, the Dark Side of the Moon was shrouded in a mysterious and peaceful radiance, where everything seemed immersed in a tranquil and profound atmosphere.
The air was filled with faint floral scents and fresh grass aromas—nature's purest breath that lifted one's spirits.
On this land, rivers ran crystal clear like silver ribbons winding through the terrain. Occasionally, fish leaped from the water's surface, tracing graceful arcs in the air.
On either side of the riverbank stood lush trees providing shade, while wildflowers bloomed in vibrant colors. Colorful butterflies danced among them, creating a scene brimming with life.
In the distance, mountains stretched endlessly, shrouded in mist as if nature had meticulously arranged a barrier to protect this pure land from external disturbances.
The people of the Dark Side of the Moon lived simple yet happy lives. They rose with the sun and rested at sunset, following nature's laws and coexisting harmoniously with all living things.
There were no hierarchies or deceit; everyone treated each other with sincerity and kindness, collectively building a community filled with love and peace.
At night, when stars adorned the sky, people gathered around campfires sharing stories and dreams. Their songs and laughter intertwined, warming the entire night.
However, Leng Fengyang’s sudden question felt like cold water splashed on Luo Shanhe’s head but made his fantasies clearer and deeper. It made him realize that the Dark Side of the Moon represented not just a longing for a safe haven but also symbolized humanity's remaining hope for survival, freedom, and a brighter future amidst desolation.
Suddenly alarmed, Leng Fengyang sensed fine grains of sand trickling down from gaps in the ceiling of the Underground City. Instinctively brushing his hair back, he looked up into the dim light above him; a look of concentration crossed his face.
Hourglass.
