As night fell, Luo Shanhe stood guard at his post, enveloped by an unexpected chill. The desert, which had felt like a furnace during the day, now resembled an icy expanse, with temperatures plummeting below freezing. The biting wind cut through layers of clothing, piercing to the bone.
He wrapped himself tightly, his garments piled on like thick armor, yet he still struggled against the penetrating cold. Drowsiness descended upon him like a heavy cloud, gradually obscuring his awareness. His eyelids felt as if weighed down by lead, heavy and difficult to open, while a sense of responsibility clashed silently with his fatigue.
Ultimately, after countless struggles against sleepiness, Luo Shanhe's defenses were mercilessly breached by exhaustion, and soon the sound of his snoring filled the air.
When Leng Fengyang and A Yan realized that their vehicle was slowly sinking into the relentless sands, their hearts leaped into their throats. They hurriedly scanned their surroundings and saw the vast Desert Sea stretching endlessly before them. Distant sand dunes rolled like golden waves, while their vehicle had become a helpless island in this expanse, half-submerged in the merciless quicksand.
"A Yan! We need to get out of the car!"
Leng Fengyang quickly assessed the situation. His voice was urgent yet steady. Hearing this, A Yan snapped back to reality. Together they worked to open the sunroof, preparing to escape, but it was already too late.
Awakened abruptly from his dreams, Luo Shanhe witnessed Leng Fengyang and A Yan along with their vehicle being engulfed by the surging sands in an instant. A strong impulse to rescue them surged within him. However, when he attempted to move forward, he found his feet deeply entrenched in the soft earth. The rapidly descending sandstorm surrounded him completely, rendering him immobile.
Damn it, how did I fall asleep?
Luo Shanhe anxiously slapped his forehead, regretting that he had dozed off due to fatigue and failed to notice the danger in time, which had led to Leng Fengyang and A Yan missing their best chance to escape.
Just as he berated himself, his body sank further into the storm. The swirling sands felt like the jaws of a giant beast slowly consuming him. In despair, he suddenly remembered Leng Fengyang and A Yan; an unprecedented surge of strength filled him—he could not give up like this; he had to find them.
He struggled fiercely, trying to pull his feet free from the sand. Each effort felt like battling an invisible force with little success. Just then, a faint sound of wind seemed to pierce through the roar of the sandstorm, bringing with it an unusual message.
After a difficult search, Luo Shanhe was thrilled to discover that the sound seemed to come from just beneath his feet. With a sudden kick of his leg, he miraculously broke free from some of the sand's grip and uncovered a small opening.
Without time for further thought, Luo Shanhe quickly widened the hole and carefully crawled inside.
To his surprise, inside was a narrow and winding tunnel built from unknown stone materials that appeared unusually sturdy—clearly not a natural formation. Hope surged within him; perhaps this was their key to survival.
As he moved deeper into the tunnel, Luo Shanhe suddenly heard faint cries for help ahead—it was Leng Fengyang and A Yan. He quickened his pace and turned a corner only to find himself in a vast underground city buried beneath the desert sands.
Faint light filtered through the cracks at the top, casting a mottled glow on this forgotten land, making it appear particularly mysterious and solemn.
Leng Fengyang and A Yan, along with their vehicle, were trapped in a relatively safe corner. The moment they saw Luo Shanhe, their eyes sparkled with the relief of having survived a great disaster.
Ignoring the minor scratches on his body, Luo Shanhe quickly rescued Leng Fengyang and A Yan from the sturdy hull of the tank. Thanks to the tank's exceptional protective capabilities and recent upgrades, despite their harrowing journey, Leng Fengyang and A Yan miraculously emerged unscathed.
On the tank's exterior, aside from a few scratches that recorded their adventurous journey and some minor dents, it still maintained an indomitable stance, showcasing its extraordinary durability and protective ability.
The Underground City lay quietly beneath the surface, like an ancient relic forgotten by time, exuding an air of both mystery and solemnity. As the explorers' footsteps gradually delved deeper, the air around them seemed to solidify, leaving only their gentle breaths and the occasional sound of dripping water echoing in the vast corridor, adding an indescribable sense of tranquility and eeriness.
On the walls, intricate carvings whispered tales of past glories and hardships. The patterns depicted deities riding clouds and mist, holding scepters while gazing down with authority upon all beings, alongside fairies dancing gracefully in shimmering garments, weaving through a tapestry of blooming flowers.
The hieroglyphs were even more profound and inscrutable; they either stood alone or intertwined in a web, each stroke seemingly containing endless stories and wisdom, waiting for a fated person to decipher them.
Remnants of living facilities were scattered throughout; although most had been eroded beyond recognition by time, one could still vaguely discern their former shapes. Beside a broken stone table and bench lingered echoes of laughter from gatherings long past, while beside a tilted stove, mottled ashes seemed to narrate tales of smoke curling into the air.
More astonishingly, in some corners of the rooms lay the remains of withered plants; though lifeless now, they silently testified that this place had once been a vibrant oasis full of life.
And that hidden reservoir was undoubtedly the most exhilarating discovery within this Underground City. It was located in a secret cave surrounded by towering stone pillars that formed a natural barrier, protecting this precious water source from external disturbances.
The water's surface was as calm as a mirror, crystal clear to the bottom, as if it could cleanse all worldly dust and fatigue. Standing beside this reservoir evoked deep reflections within one’s heart. This place was not just a refuge but also a valuable heritage witnessing the rise and fall of human civilization.
It prompted thoughts about how many unknown secrets and miracles still lay hidden in this ancient land? And where would the future path lead?
Luo Shanhe gazed at the extraordinary tranquility of the Underground City; ripples stirred within him as he suddenly broke the silence with a tone filled with infinite possibilities for the future in this post-apocalyptic world: "A-Feng, do you think this could be the Dark Side of the Moon?"
"Let’s look for an exit first," Leng Fengyang replied without directly addressing Luo Shanhe's question since he too was uncertain whether the rumored Dark Side of the Moon truly existed.
Turning to a corner of the Underground City, they discovered an Ancient Study where they found an old diary that recorded the history of this Underground City and the wisdom of its builders.
It turned out that this place was once a refuge built by an ancient civilization to withstand natural disasters, featuring a complex Ventilation System and Escape Route. The last few pages of the diary detailed the Secret Tunnel Exit leading to the outside world, which excited the three of them immensely.
However, just as they were preparing to locate this Secret Tunnel Exit, several armed soldiers burst forth from the darkness. Judging by their attire and equipment, they were likely from Kaiming, who had pursued them here in order to retrieve the Corpse Poison Vaccine Formula, and had also become trapped in this Underground City.
"Hand over that diary!"
