Leng Fengyang's gaze was firmly locked onto the gleaming new vehicle, and he couldn't help but reach out, his fingertips gently gliding over every curve of the car's body. The surge of emotions within him was not just admiration for the vehicle, but also endless awe and surprise brought by the accompanying system.
The thrill of this advantage felt like the first warm rays of sunlight piercing through the dawn, deeply intoxicating him in this unprecedented experience.
"A-Feng, take a break. I'll drive and feel the handling and performance of this tank," Luo Shanhe said, barely able to contain his excitement. Without waiting for Leng Fengyang and A Yan to get in, he jumped into the driver's seat, quickly starting the engine and preparing to set off.
As the engine let out a deep roar, the tank awakened like a giant beast, slowly releasing its latent power. Dust swirled around the vehicle, only to be whisked away by the airflow from its rear, leaving behind a profound and powerful trail.
Luo Shanhe gripped the steering wheel tightly, his eyes sparkling with desire and anticipation for adventure. He gently pressed down on the accelerator, and the vehicle moved forward smoothly and powerfully, ready to leave the quiet little town behind.
Inside the car, Leng Fengyang and A Yan exchanged amused glances at Luo Shanhe's eagerness and enthusiasm, finding it both funny and heartwarming.
"It seems, Lao Luo, that you've truly been captivated by this car's charm," A Yan said softly. "But to be honest, its performance and configuration are far superior to that of a tank. Especially in terms of space; we can stockpile more supplies now."
Leng Fengyang nodded in agreement, his gaze drifting through the window at the ever-changing desolate scenery outside as he pondered silently.
Just as they were about to drive out of town, an unexpected turn of events shattered the tranquility inside the vehicle. Several grotesque figures, dressed in tattered clothes and resembling corpses from a post-apocalyptic world, appeared out of nowhere on their path. Their hollow eyes held an inexplicable yearning, their bodies emanating a stench of decay and stained with mottled blood as they slowly approached.
Soon after, more such figures followed in layers, forming an indescribable wave of terror that enveloped the land in a shadow of despair.
Luo Shanhe's expression instantly turned serious; he tightened his grip on the steering wheel and glanced at Leng Fengyang with both caution and inquiry in his eyes.
Leng Fengyang swiftly pulled a blood-stained rebar from the back seat. His gaze was resolute and calm, as if he were already accustomed to such sudden situations. "Prepare to accelerate through them. Maintain distance; don't let them get close," he instructed.
Luo Shanhe nodded, gradually pressing down on the accelerator. The massive tank emitted a low roar, resembling a beast ready to charge.
However, just as they were about to break free from the encirclement of corpses, one of them suddenly lunged forward with surprising speed. It slammed its decayed arm against the car window—none other than Old Yang from Yang's Auto Repair.
Old Yang's twisted and horrifying face pressed against the glass; his hollow eyes seemed filled with endless resentment and unwillingness. His swift movement caught everyone off guard.
This sudden turn of events froze the atmosphere inside the vehicle; even the air was thick with an indescribable tension.
"Old Yang?!" A Yan exclaimed from the back seat, her voice filled with disbelief and profound shock.
Just moments ago, Old Yang had resolutely invested all his resources solely to upgrade that precious tank. And now, in an instant, he had transformed into a walking corpse—a shocking scene that left them all reeling from this bloody reality that was hard to process in such a short time.
"Help me, A-Feng! Please, help me!"
The weak cry for help pierced through the night, causing Leng Fengyang's heart to tighten suddenly. Luo Shanhe was about to press the accelerator and speed away from this bizarre scene when Old Yang's familiar yet desperate call held him back.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Leng Fengyang hesitated, a flicker of reluctance crossing his eyes as his fingers quietly moved to unlock the car door. "A-Feng, stay calm! He’s no longer Old Yang from the Repair Shop. Getting out to save him is too risky; we could all end up in danger."
A Yan's voice was urgent but laced with undeniable rationality, trying to pull Leng Fengyang back from the brink of action.
Internally, Leng Fengyang battled fiercely with himself. He gazed out the window at Old Yang's fading figure, his heart a tumult of emotions.
[System detected that this area has Fallen. Anomalizer detected; please evacuate immediately.]
At that moment, the personal alert system activated its emergency warning mode. Having previously read the built-in game rules, he knew that a region marked as Fallen would display an Anomalizer progress value.
The system interface turned a glaring crimson, clearly indicating the words "Fallen" in bold letters at the center. Below it, the Anomalizer Progress Bar surged wildly upward, each jump in value signaling the loss of life.
Amidst the cold data rising, the remaining humans were undergoing transformation. Based on the progress value, it was evident that there were no living souls left in this small town.
"Charge in, Lao Luo!"
Though heavy-hearted, Leng Fengyang's rational mind reminded him that the System Notification regarding abnormal human transformation could not be ignored. Old Yang had undergone an irreversible Anomaly—an Anomaly meant losing self-awareness and no longer being part of humanity.
At this moment, getting out to rescue him would not save anyone but would instead put themselves in peril and push their trio to the brink of death.
After receiving Leng Fengyang's directive, Luo Shanhe slammed down on the accelerator and collided with Old Yang.
Old Yang was dragged beneath the car, instantly reduced to a bloody mess.
With the screeching friction and violent shaking of the vehicle, an indescribable heaviness and sorrow filled the air.
Leng Fengyang shut his eyes tightly, fists clenched so hard that his nails dug into his palms as if this could alleviate his inner pain and struggle.
He understood that this moment's decision was the cruelest farewell to Old Yang but also the most rational one.
After a brief silence, Luo Shanhe turned to look at Leng Fengyang in the passenger seat and spoke slowly, his voice deep and resolute: "We need to move forward and find the Dark Side of the Moon. We must develop a Zombie Toxin Vaccine as soon as possible. I believe this is what Old Yang would have wanted."
Hearing this, Leng Fengyang took a deep breath, striving to relax his tense body.
He slowly opened his eyes, peering through the gloom enveloping outside the car window. A mirror hung high in his heart: drowning in sorrow would not bring peace to Old Yang's soul nor fulfill his previous vow to save more people from peril.
"You’re right, Lao Luo."
Leng Fengyang's voice, though slightly roughened by the biting wind, quickly regained its strength. With a swift leap from the edge of the car window, he landed firmly on the roof.
In his hand, he tightly gripped the blood-stained rebar, decisively ending the threat posed by the approaching corpse.
