The flickering red candle was trembling violently, as if it sensed the imminent end of its life.
The night enveloped the sky like a massive dark satin, tightly shrouding the heavens.
In the darkness, the wind rustled the branches and leaves of the trees, creating sounds that echoed eerily in the quiet of the deep night, making one instinctively tense up.
In the distance, a few barks from dogs tore through the calm night, faintly accompanied by the sound of Wang Wu striking his wooden clapper, pulling his already snug cotton coat closer to himself as he silently vowed to quit this night watch job by morning.
He picked up the clapper and began to strike it, calling out loudly, "The air is dry; be careful with candles! It's past midnight!"
Suddenly, the flame in the lantern extinguished, unable to adapt to this abrupt change. Wang Wu froze in place, feeling as if he were engulfed in complete darkness.
When he regained his senses, he caught sight of a figure swiftly gliding past him toward East Street.
"That... that... that can't be..." He trembled all over like a sieve.
He recognized that figure; it was unmistakably familiar—it belonged to that person.
But on a night like this, moving at such speed, there was no way they could appear before him.
If he wasn't imagining things, then it must be...
"Ghost! There's a ghost! Help!" He turned around, dropped the clapper, and fled toward his home as if propelled by fear.
At the nearby East Street Corner, a white figure paused for a moment, turned back to glance at the panicked Wang Wu fleeing, and a shadowy smile crept across their lips before disappearing into the darkness.
"I heard from the master that you love Lotus Seed Pods the most."
Yi Yi carefully took out a package of Lotus Seed Pods from the food box and handed it to Ren Zhigao. "It's winter now, so there are no fresh Lotus Seed Pods available. However, this is a special purchase of dried Lotus Seed Pods. They taste even better and are more refreshing than fresh ones. Give it a try!"
She coldly lifted her disheveled face, glancing at Yi Yi and Zhan Feiyang standing behind her, then looked at the Lotus Seed Pods with a weak smile. "When will I finally die?"
"Don't say that."
Yi Yi looked at her sympathetically. "We all know that you're the one suffering the most from this situation..."
"If you truly pity me, then please hurry up and have someone take me out to be killed. Carve my real name, Xie Keyou, on my tombstone. The 'Xie' for pity and the 'Keyou' for beauty."
As she spoke, tears glimmered in her eyes. "When I was little, my father loved to call me Rong'er. He has been gone for so many years, and all these years, everyone has called me Zhigao, but I still often fail to respond. I always remember my father standing under the Wutong Tree, peeling Lotus Seed Pods for me while calling out, 'Rong'er, don’t run so fast; be careful not to fall…'"
She picked up a Lotus Seed Pod and gently tore open its shell, extracting a plump Lotus Seed. The sun-dried brownish-green shell was slowly ripped apart by her fingers, as if childhood memories were unfolding in her mind.
"If that day I hadn’t encountered her and that man, I might not have acted! But fate made me witness that scene with my own eyes."
As she spoke, she bit down hard on the Lotus Seed, wild veins appearing in her eyes. "She has always been nothing but a promiscuous woman."
"But she is still your mother! Blood is thicker than water…" Yi Yi truly couldn't understand how deeply Rong Xiaoxiao's betrayal had affected her heart.
"What do you understand? If you were me, and saw the woman you already hated engaging in such disgraceful acts with a doctor you just met, what would you think? I won't regret it! I don't regret it! She deserves to die; she absolutely deserves to die!"
As she spoke, she stuffed an unpeeled Lotus Seed into her mouth and chewed it unconsciously.
"Doctor? Which doctor are you referring to?" A thought flashed through Zhan Feiyang's mind.
However, Xie Keyou seemed to completely ignore his words, desperately shoving more Lotus Seeds into her mouth, her gaze vacant and her expression blank.
"Forget it. I've heard she's been like this for several days now."
Yi Yi sighed, taking out the prepared meal and wine from the food box and placing them in front of her. "I made all of this myself; please eat a little! It's just a small token of our goodwill!"
Xie Keyou remained expressionless, staring blankly at a point in the void.
To finally kill the enemy she had hated for so many years only to find out it was her own mother—such a thing would be unbearable for anyone. Zhan Feiyang shook the keys in his hand. "Forget it, let's go!"
Yi Yi nodded and stood up, while Zhan Feiyang turned back to close the cell door.
Sunlight streamed in through the small window by the wall, casting light on Xie Keyou's face, which bore a striking resemblance to the deceased Rong Xiaoxiao.
Zhan Feiyang frowned, feeling that in that fleeting moment, something important had slipped his mind, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't recall it.
