I walked up to the edge of the woods, and her whole body trembled with fear.
"Are you afraid of me, Linzi?" I crouched down and looked into her eyes, speaking gently.
Linzi raised her head to sneak a glance at me, but quickly lowered it again.
I raised my arm to pat her shoulder, to comfort her and tell her not to be afraid in the future, but when she saw me raise my hand, she quickly hid behind the tree.
I feel a mix of emotions in my heart as I watch her in pain. She used to be such a bold person.
When I was in elementary school, my parents died in a car accident. I was mocked by my classmates for being an orphan. It was Lin Zi who appeared just in time and beat up those kids, which helped me to emerge from those dark days.
"Gu~" Linzi's stomach suddenly growled, and she instinctively touched her belly, frowning in a pitiful manner.
"Cough cough! Linzi, are you hungry? Would you like to come home with me?" I smiled tentatively and reached out my hand. I didn't dare to get too close to her, afraid that she might be scared of me.
Linzi stared at me with her big eyes, observing my every move.
"Eat...food..." she swayed, as if contemplating for a moment.
"Yeah, let's eat!" I said gently, as if comforting a wounded child.
She glanced at me and nodded gently.
Seeing her reaction, I dared to take a step forward, but she unexpectedly took a few steps back.
"Don't be afraid! I won't move, just follow me obediently, okay?" I immediately raised my hands in a surrendering gesture.
She nodded, but my gaze fell on her feet. It was already autumn, and she was dressed so lightly, but she didn't even have a pair of shoes on!
I took off my coat and shoes, took a step forward lightly, and saw her eyes start to avoid mine again. I immediately stood still, put my clothes and shoes on the ground, and gestured for her to put them on.
I walked ahead, and she followed behind me secretly. I didn't dare to walk too fast, afraid that she might accidentally get lost.
I couldn't help but glance back, and the way Linzi walked was especially cute. She took small, hesitant steps, constantly looking around, like a mischievous child who had just done something wrong.
At this thought, my heart suddenly sank. I realized belatedly that perhaps she was afraid, afraid that there might be bad people on the street who could grab her at any moment...
At this moment, I really want to rush up and hug her tightly. I really want to tell her that she doesn't need to be afraid anymore when she comes back.
I clenched my fists tightly, trying hard to control my emotions. I brought her to the place where I live, which is the ancestral home left to me by my grandfather. As soon as you enter, there is a spacious courtyard.
In the courtyard, there is a very large tree with heart-shaped leaves. The trunk of the tree is so thick that it would take several people to encircle it.
"Xi Chen is back!" An elderly woman with white hair came out of the house.
"Aunty Zhang! What are you doing here?" I looked at Aunty Zhang in confusion. How could she appear here?
"The village chief and we have all discussed it. You have made too many contributions to our village. At your age, you don't even have a wife. You can't come back and not even have a hot meal, right?" Aunty Zhang joked.
I saw Linzi standing at the door, peeking out and carefully observing our every move.
"What's this?" Aunty Zhang saw a woman at the door from a distance, looking sneaky and dirty. If it weren't for her wearing Xi Chen's coat, she would have suspected the girl was here to beg!
