At that moment, he noticed two figures swaying in the graveyard, unsure if they were human or ghostly. Curiosity compelled him to take a closer look.
He took a few steps forward but accidentally stepped on a twig, which snapped loudly underfoot. The sound startled the two figures, who quickly turned and began to chase after him.
Zhang Ming was terrified and ran with all his might toward the path where he could see clearly, while the two dark shadows pursued him closely from behind.
Fearing capture, Zhang Ming desperately sprinted forward. Finally, after darting through an alley, he managed to shake off the two shadows. Relying on instinct, he somehow found his way home.
Exhausted and shaken, Zhang Ming collapsed into bed as soon as he got home and slept soundly until the following afternoon when he groggily woke up.
Feeling hungry, he headed to the same shop as usual and ordered the signature dish.
However, this time, the usually taciturn shopkeeper's wife spoke to him in a strange tone.
"Mr. Zhang, you don't look so well. Did you not sleep well last night? Take your time eating; you might not get to eat this again," she said with a cold laugh before walking away.
This puzzled Zhang Ming, but he couldn't make sense of it at that moment. As he pondered, he heard the sound of high heels behind him. The shopkeeper's wife approached again and struck him hard on the back of the head with a wooden stick.
Zhang Ming's vision went black as he fainted. When he regained consciousness, he found himself tied to a pillar.
He dared not make a sound and carefully struggled against his bindings. As he twisted to free himself, he took in his surroundings and was shocked to realize he was in a graveyard—the very place where he had gotten lost the night before.
The shopkeeper and his wife stood nearby, coldly watching Zhang Ming with weapons in hand.
The boss lady had completely transformed from her usual modest and dignified self into a sinister figure. She mentioned that she had initially planned to fatten up Zhang Ming before killing him, but since he had seen something he shouldn't have, she uttered words that Zhang Ming could not accept: "You are the main ingredient for Sour and Fragrant Bone-in Meat! We’ve tried using other meats before, but none of them had the authentic flavor of flesh after death. Without a proper meat source, it’s very difficult; we can only do it this way."
The boss seemed unwilling to say more, casting a cold glare at Zhang Ming, urging the boss lady to act quickly.
At this point, Zhang Ming realized that he was about to become the ingredient for that dish. There was no time for regrets; he closed his eyes and awaited his fate.
Just when he thought he was doomed, he heard a blood-curdling scream from the boss lady.
Zhang Ming opened his eyes to see her trembling in fear as she looked behind him.
Not knowing what could frighten her so much, he turned around and saw some swaying ghosts behind him.
He recognized one of them as a beggar he had seen before, wearing his own clothes.
The couple was paralyzed with fear on the ground, begging for mercy, while the figures lunged at them with gritted teeth. In the blink of an eye, the boss lady and her husband were torn to shreds.
Summoning all his strength, Zhang Ming broke free from his bindings and fled desperately until he could run no more.
As he recalled that he had been eating human flesh all along, nausea overwhelmed him, and he vomited violently.
Once his panic subsided, Zhang Ming called the police.
When he brought the officers back to the graveyard, however, there was no sign of anyone—only a piece of clothing lying on the ground, which was the very garment he had draped over that beggar the night before.
The police determined that Zhang Ming had made a false report and criticized him for it.
Zhang Ming returned to the shop, only to be surprised to find it completely empty, as if it had not been in operation for a long time.
To this day, Zhang Ming cannot figure out whether this experience was real or just a figment of his imagination, yet the faces of that couple and the taste of that dish remain vividly etched in his memory.
After this incident, a chilling rumor began to circulate in the community, claiming that a couple had opened a small eatery and, in order to save money, used human flesh as an ingredient in their dishes. The source of the human flesh was said to be beggars and late-night customers at the restaurant.
