On September 15, 2012, Sister Zhang, the landlord of an apartment complex in Shanghai, went downstairs to collect rent from a young couple who had been overdue for several days. After several attempts to call them without any response, she suspected they might have run away and decided to check on them in person.
After knocking on the door for a long time with no reply, Sister Zhang tried calling them again. This time, she could faintly hear the phone ringing inside the room but still no one answered.
Feeling uneasy about the situation, she borrowed a ladder from a neighbor and went to the backyard to peek through the window. What she saw inside nearly made her fall off the ladder; a gruesome murder had taken place in her rental unit.
Regaining her composure, Sister Zhang quickly called the police. Upon learning of the situation, officers rushed to the scene for investigation.
Upon entering the apartment, the police were immediately hit by an indescribable stench of blood.
In the bedroom, they discovered two bodies—a man and a woman—surrounded by bloodstains everywhere.
What horrified the officers even more was that the woman was naked from the waist up, with a 20-centimeter-long incision across her chest. Her abdomen had also been sliced open, and both her heart and intestines were removed and placed on the bedsheet.
Upon closer inspection, they noticed that a portion of the heart was missing and there were clear bite marks on it, indicating it had been bitten off.
The male victim had over twenty stab wounds concentrated mainly in his abdomen, each penetrating deeply into his flesh, showing just how much force the assailant had used.
However, what puzzled the police was the strange position of the male victim; he lay on his back with his neck arched and mouth wide open, having somehow swallowed his entire fist.
Next to him on his left side lay a bloody kitchen knife. Judging by the size and shape of the wounds, this knife was clearly the weapon used to kill both victims.
Upon witnessing the bizarre scene of the incident, the police found themselves at a loss, even seasoned officers felt a chill run down their spines at the sight of the carnage.
After transporting the bodies to the morgue for an autopsy, it was determined that the female victim had died from excessive blood loss due to her injuries, while the male victim had been suffocated to death.
Once the male victim's hand was removed from his throat, a mass of flesh was discovered lodged within.
Through examination, it was revealed that this mass was, in fact, the uterus of a woman.
The police concluded that the assailant had intended for the male victim to swallow the uterus, but it had become stuck in his throat. When he attempted to extract it with his hands, it was too late; thus, he suffocated to death.
What was even more horrifying was that this uterus contained embryonic tissue, indicating that it belonged to a pregnant woman. DNA testing confirmed that this uterus belonged to the female victim.
Can you imagine the brutality of a pregnant woman being murdered, her abdomen sliced open to extract her uterus and forcefully shoved into her boyfriend's mouth?
Even forensic experts, who routinely deal with corpses, found it hard to believe such an atrocity could occur.
While determining the causes of death for both individuals, another team of officers learned from the landlord that this couple had moved in shortly after the New Year.
They spent most of their time either at work or in their rented room and rarely interacted with others.
The landlord mentioned that she seldom heard them argue, suggesting their relationship was stable.
If this wasn't a crime of passion or revenge, could it be that they were killed for financial gain?
However, upon investigating the room, police found that all doors and windows were intact without signs of forced entry. Their bags, phones, and the female victim's jewelry were all present, indicating that robbery was not a motive.
Just as confusion set in among the police, they discovered that the weapon found in the apartment bore only the fingerprints of both victims and no evidence of a third party. Given these clues, authorities began to suspect that they may have engaged in mutual massacre.
As forensic experts further analyzed the wounds, they made a shocking discovery: the injuries on the male victim were self-inflicted.
Moreover, bite marks on the female victim's heart matched dental impressions from the male victim, indicating he had bitten off a piece of her heart.
Typically, such a case defies logic; why would he do this?
However, some items uncovered during further investigation provided a plausible explanation for this gruesome incident.
In the rental apartment, the police discovered drug paraphernalia belonging to two individuals. The forensic experts also found traces of Methamphetamine in their bodies. In addition to the Methamphetamine, there was a significant amount of alcohol present in their systems.
Although the police found it hard to believe, they deduced that on the night of the incident, after consuming a large quantity of alcohol, the male victim had ingested an overdose of Methamphetamine, which caused him to experience hallucinations and become extremely agitated.
In a fit of uncontrolled rage, he fatally stabbed his girlfriend, then proceeded to disembowel her, extracting her heart and intestines and taking a few bites.
Under the influence of alcohol and drugs, he even attempted to swallow his girlfriend's uterus. However, when he shoved it into his mouth, he realized it was too large and blocked his throat.
At that moment, he felt suffocated and tried to pull the uterus out with his hands, but before he could remove it, he choked to death.
The police's reconstruction of events provided a reasonable explanation for the male victim's brutal actions; a normal person would never commit such atrocities.
This case was later documented in a paper published in the Chinese Journal of Forensic Medicine to raise awareness about the dangers posed by drugs.
Yet, some individuals still engage in reckless behavior for a fleeting moment of pleasure, ultimately harming themselves and others.
How many drug enforcement officers lose their lives at the hands of drug dealers each year?
How many individuals addicted to drugs are hurting their loved ones every day?
