"Who are you?" I demanded sharply, taking a cautious step back.
The man did not answer; he simply raised his head slowly, revealing a haggard face. His face was lined with wrinkles, and his sunken eyes seemed to have endured unimaginable torment. A pair of murky eyes stared blankly at us, as if he had yet to grasp the situation before him.
" Professor Vincent?" Hugo exclaimed in disbelief.
I froze. Indeed, this gaunt old man was none other than the long-missing biological expert, the Chief Scientist of GH, Professor Vincent. His mysterious disappearance had caused quite a stir years ago; the police had deployed significant resources to search for him but found nothing. Now, he appeared here—what could have happened?
"It’s you..." Vincent murmured, looking around at us with growing clarity in his gaze. "Young people, you shouldn’t be here. This place is a hell on earth!"
Before he could finish, the old man suddenly clutched his chest, his face turning pale as he collapsed heavily to the ground. I rushed forward to help him up and discovered that his once pristine lab coat was soaked with blood!
" Professor Vincent, what’s wrong? What happened?" I asked urgently.
Vincent shakily raised his hand and pointed toward a small door in the corner. "Children, heed my advice—leave this cursed place... Behind that door lies everything you wish to know... but the truth is often more brutal than lies... You have already been caught in an... unimaginable vortex..."
With those words, Vincent slumped in my arms, falling silent forever. My trembling hands checked for his breath, but all I felt was a wave of dizziness. The professor was gone, taking all his secrets with him, leaving this world for good.
I knelt there in shock, tears blurring my vision.
A great scientist passed away in solitude, his suffering and the burdens of his sins unknown to anyone. Perhaps he could have prevented it all, but in the end, he was just another victim in this mad world, like the rest of us.
"Matthew, my condolences," Hugo said, patting my shoulder. "But we must gather our spirits now. Beyond that door lies the key to the entire conspiracy. We've come this far; we cannot stop here!"
I nodded, wiping my tears and standing up. Indeed, for the countless innocent souls and for this world on the brink of destruction, we had to unveil the truth, no matter how ugly and cruel it might be. Only by confronting the demons could we hope to dispel the darkness and welcome the dawn.
Thus, we bid farewell to Vincent's body and, with heavy hearts, walked toward the mysterious door. Sam and Hugo took turns pushing against it with their shoulders, exerting all their strength. Finally, with a piercing creak, the heavy iron door slowly opened. Inside was a deep, dark corridor leading who knows where.
I turned on my flashlight, took a deep breath, and stepped over the threshold first. My companions followed closely behind, but no one spoke. An indescribable fear loomed over us, yet a strong sense of mission propelled us forward.
We walked for what felt like an eternity when suddenly a few glimmers of light flickered in the darkness. We held our breath and slowed our pace. Before us opened up a vast circular hall. In the center stood a massive operating table surrounded by towering electronic instruments. Above us was a transparent dome through which we could clearly see the gray sky.
"Hello, and welcome to the City of the Future," a soft female voice echoed through the hall. "As esteemed guests of GH, you are about to witness a great leap in human civilization. Soon, the old order will crumble into dust, and a new era will begin. And you will become the sacrifices for this grand feast..."
Before her words could finish, the lights around us suddenly blazed bright. Accompanied by a mechanical roar, the operating table began to move on its own! The surface opened up to reveal a large circular hole. Following that, a silver metallic sphere slowly rose and hovered beneath the dome.
"What is that thing?" Lucy screamed in shock.
At that moment, seams on the surface of the metallic sphere split open, releasing billowing white smoke.
A colossal figure slowly rose, revealing the creature MOT-27 from the cultivation tank! However, it was no longer covered in skin and flesh; instead, it was a gleaming metal skeleton adorned with intricate electronic components. This was clearly a killing machine!
"Welcome to witness the ultimate evolution of humanity and machines," a cold female voice echoed through the hall. "MOT-27, a masterpiece that combines virus and technology, will become the ruler of the new world. Unfortunately, you are too late. The higher-ups of GH have already boarded their spaceship to seek refuge in space. As for you, you are destined to be the first sacrifices..."
"Not if we can help it!" I tightened my grip on the gun, standing back-to-back with my companions, our eyes fiercely locked on the monster before us. "We won't just sit here and wait to die!"
Before I could finish my sentence, MOT-27 let out a piercing roar and lunged forward. Its speed was astonishing; in the blink of an eye, it was right in front of me, its steel claws aimed directly at my throat!
