Just as I was lost in thought, Raymond opened a large metal box and pulled out a pile of compressed biscuits and canned meat. 0

"Come on, kids, don't be shy. Eat your fill. From now on, I'll take care of you, and you won't have to worry about going hungry anymore." 0

The aroma of the food made Lucy's eyes light up with excitement. I quickly thanked Raymond and took the biscuits he offered. The moment I bit into the first one, I nearly shed tears. God knows how long it had been since I had eaten something so delicious. 0

As I was devouring the food, a hoarse voice suddenly rang out from behind me. "Raymond, you brought outsiders back again? That's against the rules." 0

I turned around in fear to see a man in camouflage standing at the door. He had a buzz cut, a cold glare, and a tight-lipped expression that clearly indicated he was not someone to mess with. 0

" Sergeant Smith, let's talk this over. I just brought them back because they looked pitiful and needed a place to lay low," Raymond said awkwardly, quickly putting down the food. 0

"Your little bit of compassion is going to get us killed one day!" Sergeant Smith sneered. "Fine, since they're here now, they can't leave. But you need to explain this to the Colonel; this isn't a shelter!" 0

With that, Sergeant Smith turned and left with a dark expression, leaving us exchanging glances. 0

"Who is that guy? He’s so scary," Lucy asked timidly. 0

"He's the second-in-command of this group, and his temper can be quite volatile," Raymond sighed helplessly. "But they're all good people; it's just that in such extreme conditions, it's hard not to be suspicious and on guard." 0

I frowned, growing more curious about the "group" Raymond mentioned. It seemed that there were more survivors in this shelter than just Raymond himself. What kind of people could survive in this apocalypse and even establish an armed force like this? 0

Just as I pondered this, footsteps echoed again. Then a commanding voice came through: "Everyone step aside; let me see what kind of people Raymond has brought back this time." 0

I instinctively straightened my back and looked in the direction of the voice. 0

A tall middle-aged man strode in, exuding a chilling aura. He was dressed in a crisp military uniform, with gleaming badges on his chest. His eagle-like sharp eyes seemed capable of piercing through one's soul. 0

"Claire Colonel," Raymond stood at attention, his tone respectful. "Report: these two children are survivors I discovered while patrolling outside. They have been hiding for a long time and were truly at their wits' end. Out of humanitarian concern, I took the liberty of bringing them back." 0

Claire Colonel frowned and scrutinized Lucy and me from head to toe. "What is your name, child?" 0

"My name is Matthew, Matthew Wright," I replied, forcing myself to speak. "This is Lucy, the little girl I found in the ruins. We really mean no harm; we just want to find a safe place to hide." 0

Claire Colonel fixed his gaze on me, his eyes intense as if trying to uncover my secrets. After a moment, he coldly said, "Fine, I will make an exception and take you in. However, you must obey orders unconditionally, cannot go out on your own, and absolutely must not hoard food. Do you understand?" 0

"Understood, understood," I said, feeling as if I had been granted a reprieve. I nodded eagerly. "Thank you for your generosity; we will definitely adhere to the rules." 0

Claire Colonel nodded in satisfaction and asked, "Are you studying medicine? Perfect; we urgently need a military doctor here. From today on, you will work in the medical team and perform well." 0

I was overjoyed and quickly agreed. Who would have thought that my medical knowledge would come in handy in this apocalyptic world? Not only did I have a place to stay now, but I could also utilize my skills—what's not to like? 0

Thus began our new life in the shelter for Lucy and me. Although conditions were harsh and discipline was strict, we finally felt a sense of safety and belonging. During the day, I worked in the Medical Room, saving injured individuals and preparing medicines; at night, Lucy and I would eat together and chat like an ordinary brother and sister. Gradually, I thought the nightmare was over and that new hope lay ahead. 0

However, the good times didn't last long. During a routine medical examination, I discovered a terrifying secret on one of the soldiers. 0

The soldier was weak, with a low fever and muscle pain. At first, I thought it was just a common cold. But when I examined him closely, I found a fresh bite mark on the back of his neck! 0

It was unmistakably the bite of an Infected Person! My God, this soldier had been infected! But why hadn't he turned into a zombie? How could he still function normally? Had the virus mutated again? 0

My hands began to tremble, and beads of sweat rolled down my forehead. What should I do? Should I report this immediately to Colonel Claire, or should I find a way to handle it privately? But if I were discovered hiding this information, would I be executed as a spy? 0

Just as I was caught in this dilemma, the soldier on the bed slowly opened his eyes. He stared at me intently, a strange smile creeping across his lips. "Doctor, please... save me..." 0
