As night fell, the outline of the abandoned nuclear power plant loomed ominously under the moonlight. Li Lin and the members of Squad met with the operatives of the shadow organization, tension and distrust hanging thick in the air.
"Remember the plan," Night Owl whispered, her eyes glinting in the darkness. "We split up; you take the east side while we attack from the west."
Li Lin frowned. "That's not what we agreed upon. What trick are you trying to play?"
Night Owl smirked coldly. "Plans change. Since you're so wary, why not fight separately?"
Liya tightened her grip on her weapon. "Li Lin, I don't trust her."
"We have no choice," Li Lin replied, gently stroking Xiao Xing's head. "Stay alert and be ready to retreat at any moment."
Squad quietly slipped into the shadows of the nuclear power plant, the air thick with a pungent smell of radiation. Li Lin felt his heart race; every step could trigger an alarm.
Suddenly, an alarm shattered the night. "Damn it!" Li Lin cursed. "It's a trap!"
Gunfire erupted, bullets whistling through the darkness. Xiao Xing let out a low growl, starlight shimmering on its form. Li Lin quickly assessed the situation. "Scatter and hide! Find the armory!"
In the chaos, Li Lin became separated from Liya. He held Xiao Xing tightly as they navigated through the hail of bullets, relying on Xiao Xing's instincts to evade several deadly attacks.
"Over there!" Li Lin spotted a heavy metal door marked with the word 'Armory.'
Just as he prepared to pry it open, a cold laugh echoed behind him. "What a delightful surprise."
Li Lin suddenly turned around and saw Night Owl aiming a gun at him. "You really are up to something," he said.
Night Owl sneered, "Don't be naive. In this world, betrayal is the norm."
At that moment, Xiao Xing let out a piercing scream, and a blinding burst of starlight erupted. Night Owl was forced to retreat, giving Li Lin the chance to dash towards her.
The two engaged in a fierce struggle, exchanging blows. Night Owl's combat skills were on par with Li Lin's, but Li Lin's will to survive was stronger.
Finally, Li Lin found an opening and landed a heavy punch to Night Owl's jaw. She staggered back and crashed into the door of the armory.
Li Lin rushed inside but froze in shock. It wasn't an armory; it was a laboratory filled with dozens of incubation pods, each containing grotesque creatures.
"Oh my god," Li Lin gasped. "What the hell are these things?"
Night Owl stood up with a sinister grin. "Surprised? This is the Reaver's secret plan—to use Starwing Beast genes to create super soldiers."
Li Lin's face turned pale. "You know about this?"
"Of course," Night Owl shrugged. "We don't just want weapons; we want this research."
Suddenly, alarms blared again, and Night Owl's expression changed. "Damn it! The Reaver's reinforcements have arrived."
Seizing the opportunity, Li Lin kicked over a nearby shelf, sending a pile of documents scattering across the floor. He quickly grabbed several sheets and stuffed them into his pocket.
"You think this will stop us?" Night Owl scoffed. "Naive—there's no escape for you."
At that moment, a loud explosion shook the entire building. Liya rushed in with her team, shouting, "Li Lin! We have to retreat!"
Li Lin nodded and picked up Xiao Xing. "Let's go!"
They broke through the chaos, the curses of Night Owl and the gunfire of the raiders intertwining behind them.
After escaping the nuclear power plant, Li Lin looked back at the thick smoke rising, the flames illuminating the night sky.
"What did we get?" Liya panted, her breath heavy.
Li Lin touched the documents in his arms. "Maybe the truth, or perhaps even bigger trouble."
Xiao Xing gently nuzzled his hand, worry evident in her eyes. Li Lin sighed softly. "No matter what, we've already been caught up in this storm."
In the distance, shouts of pursuers could be faintly heard. Li Lin knew this was just the beginning; greater challenges awaited them.
