Li Lin clenched his fists, his gaze darting between Xiao Xing and Liya, a fierce internal struggle raging within him. "I won't let you hurt them," he thought.
Hawk let out a cold laugh, slowly raising the gun in his hand. "You have no choice."
At that critical moment, a harsh metallic scraping sound suddenly echoed from outside the cave. Nightingale burst into the cave like a bolt of lightning, kicking Hawk's gun away with a swift motion.
"Follow me!" Nightingale shouted, quickly retreating toward the cave entrance.
Li Lin reacted instantly, grabbing Liya and charging toward the exit. "Run!" he shouted, with Xiao Xing closely behind.
The four of them stumbled out of the cave, only to hear Hawk's furious roar behind them. "Don't let them escape!"
Gunfire erupted in the darkness, bullets whizzing past their ears. Li Lin gritted his teeth and sprinted forward without hesitation.
Liya suddenly stumbled, and Li Lin quickly steadied her. "Hang in there!"
Xiao Xing emitted a sharp cry, her body glowing faintly as an invisible energy barrier formed around the four of them. Bullets struck it with a clattering sound.
Li Lin's heart raced as he glanced at Xiao Xing on his shoulder. "Well done, buddy!"
Nightingale led them through the maze-like ruins until they finally arrived at a hidden underground factory. She deftly opened a heavy metal door. "Get inside!"
As soon as they rushed into the factory, hurried footsteps echoed behind them. Nightingale quickly shut the door and activated the security system.
"We're safe for now," Nightingale panted, scanning their surroundings warily. "But we need to figure out how to get out of here quickly."
Only then did Li Lin have the chance to examine this mysterious woman closely. "Who are you? Why did you save us?"
The Nightingale fell silent for a moment before saying, "Because we have a common enemy." She locked eyes with Li Lin. "The forces behind the Falcon are more terrifying than you can imagine."
Li Lin's heart sank. "What do you mean?"
The Nightingale shook her head. "This isn't the place to talk." She glanced around warily. "We need to find a way out first."
Just then, a piercing alarm suddenly blared, and the emergency lights in the factory flickered with red light, illuminating the dark and damp surroundings.
"Damn it!" the Nightingale cursed. "They've activated the factory's security system."
Li Lin clenched his fists. "We're trapped."
Liya leaned weakly against the wall, her face pale. "What should we do?"
Li Lin took a deep breath, his gaze resolute. "We need to find a way to break through." He looked at the Nightingale. "Are you familiar with this place?"
The Nightingale nodded. "I've been here before to scout." She pointed in one direction. "There's a hidden passage over there; it might be our only way out."
At that moment, a flurry of footsteps echoed from afar. Li Lin perked up, alert. "They're coming."
The Nightingale quickly made a decision. "Follow me; I'll lead the way."
The four of them cautiously advanced in the darkness, using the faint emergency lights to avoid various obstacles. Li Lin occasionally glanced back to ensure that Liya and Xiao Xing were close behind.
Suddenly, a loud explosion rocked the entire factory, and debris and dust fell from the ceiling.
"They're blowing the door!" the Nightingale shouted. "We need to move faster!"
Li Lin supported Liya as they quickened their pace. Xiao Xing clung tightly to his shoulder, its feathers bristling and emitting a faint glow.
They passed through a narrow passage and entered a spacious workshop filled with piles of discarded machines and parts, the air thick with the scent of decay and metal.
The Nightingale suddenly stopped. "This is bad."
Li Lin asked alertly, "What’s wrong?"
The Nightingale pointed ahead. "That door should be open." She gritted her teeth. "They’ve changed the security system."
Li Lin looked around, searching for other exits, but aside from the way they had come, there seemed to be no other options.
"We're trapped," Liya said despairingly.
Just then, Xiao Xing jumped off Li Lin's shoulder. It spun around on the ground a few times before barking in a certain direction.
Li Lin's eyes lit up. "Xiao Xing found something!"
They followed Xiao Xing to a pile of discarded machines, where it scratched at the ground, producing a harsh sound.
Li Lin crouched down to examine the ground closely. Sure enough, beneath the thick layer of dust, he could faintly make out the outline of a metal cover.
"There's a hidden door here!" Li Lin exclaimed excitedly.
The Nightingale immediately crouched down to help clear away the dust. "That's right; this should lead to the sewer entrance."
At that moment, a hurried sound of footsteps approached from behind. Li Lin suddenly stood up, positioning himself in front of Liya and Xiao Xing.
"Open the door!" he whispered urgently.
Nightingale forcefully pulled aside the heavy metal cover, revealing a dark opening. "Jump down!"
Li Lin supported Liya as they carefully climbed into the hole, with Xiao Xing following closely behind. Nightingale was the last to jump in.
Just as the metal cover closed above them, they heard the sound of raiders breaking into the workshop.
The four held their breath in the darkness, quietly waiting for the muffled voices and footsteps above to fade away, which they soon did.
"We're safe for now," Nightingale sighed in relief.
Li Lin looked around, using the faint light emitted by Xiao Xing to see a long tunnel extending into the darkness.
"Which way should we go?" he asked.
Nightingale pointed in one direction. "Follow this tunnel; it should lead to the edge of the city."
Just as they were about to set off, Liya suddenly collapsed to the ground. Li Lin rushed to support her. "What’s wrong?"
Liya bit her lip in pain. "I... my leg."
Li Lin then noticed that Liya's pants were stained with blood. "You're hurt! Why didn't you say anything?"
Liya weakly shook her head. "I don't want to be a burden to everyone."
Li Lin felt a pang of guilt. "We need to tend to the wounds first."
Nightingale pulled out a simple Medical Kit from her backpack. "Let me handle it; I have some medical knowledge."
Li Lin nodded, allowing Nightingale to bandage Liya while he turned to survey their surroundings, ensuring their safety.
Xiao Xing gently nudged Li Lin's hand, letting out a low whine. Li Lin patted its head. "Don't worry, we'll be fine."
Suddenly, a strange sound echoed from deep within the tunnel. Li Lin perked up, ears alert. "Did you hear that?"
Nightingale paused her bandaging. "What sound?"
Li Lin furrowed his brow. "It sounds like... machinery operating."
The four exchanged glances, an ominous feeling washing over them.
"We need to leave here quickly," Nightingale said, hastening her bandaging.
Li Lin nodded and crouched down, preparing to lift Liya. Just then, Xiao Xing let out a sharp cry.
