Li Lin and Liya burst into an abandoned factory workshop, panting heavily as the shouts of the raiders faded into the distance behind them.
They had finally shaken off their pursuers, but both understood that this was only a temporary safety.
Li Lin carefully set Xing'er down and checked for any injuries.
Liya scanned the surroundings warily, only relaxing once she confirmed there were no threats. "Looks like we're safe for now."
Li Lin nodded, but his eyes remained alert. "Yeah, for now."
His gaze fell on the mark on Liya's arm, the faint symbol sending alarm bells ringing in his mind.
"Liya, I have a question for you," Li Lin said, locking eyes with her, his tone stern.
Liya sensed his unease and asked anxiously, "What question?"
"What is that mark on your arm?" Li Lin asked bluntly.
Liya's expression changed abruptly as she instinctively covered the mark with her hand. "It's just... a tattoo."
Li Lin scoffed. "Don't lie to me; that's not an ordinary tattoo."
"I've seen similar marks in Military Files. It's an identification symbol of some mysterious organization," he pressed, staring intently at Liya. "Who exactly are you?"
Liya's face paled, and she stammered, "I... I don't know what you're talking about."
Li Lin suddenly stood up, fury boiling over. "Stop pretending! Are you an insider for the raiders?"
"No! I'm not!" Liya denied passionately.
"Then explain this mark!" Li Lin demanded.
Tension crackled between them, the atmosphere reaching a breaking point.
At that moment, Xing'er let out a soft chirp and trotted between them.
It nuzzled against Li Lin's leg before affectionately leaning toward Liya.
Both Li Lin and Liya froze, their argument interrupted by Xing'er's unexpected gesture.
Liya looked at Xing'er, a flicker of hesitation crossing her eyes. "Maybe... I should tell you the truth."
She took a deep breath and slowly said, "You're right, this mark is definitely not an ordinary tattoo."
"I used to be a researcher at 'Technological Ruins.' This mark is part of my identification."
Li Lin frowned. "'Technological Ruins'? What is that?"
"A secret research base where we studied technologies that could change the fate of the wasteland," Liya explained.
Li Lin narrowed his eyes. "Sounds like some kind of conspiracy."
Liya shook her head. "No, our intentions were good, but..."
Her voice suddenly dropped, and a flicker of pain crossed her eyes.
Li Lin keenly sensed her distress. "But what?"
Liya bit her lip. "But things got out of control in the end, and I had to escape."
Li Lin pondered for a moment. "So you're on the run now?"
Liya nodded. "Yes, I can't let that technology fall into the wrong hands."
Li Lin stared into her eyes, trying to gauge the truth of her words.
After a long silence, he finally spoke. "Alright, I'll tentatively believe you."
"Then where is this 'Technological Ruins' located?"
Liya hesitated for a moment before saying, "In a valley to the northwest."
"But it's very dangerous there, with tight security systems and terrifying guards."
Li Lin pondered, "It sounds like a place worth exploring."
Liya looked at him in surprise. "You want to go there?"
He nodded. "If there really is technology that can change the fate of the wasteland, it's worth the risk."
Liya hesitated, then sighed. "Well, if you're determined."
"But I must warn you, the dangers there are far beyond your imagination."
Li Lin gave a wry smile. "In this world, is there anywhere that isn't dangerous?"
He looked down at Xing'er and said softly, "Besides, I feel like this little guy has some kind of connection to that place."
Liya gazed at Xing'er in astonishment. "How do you know?"
Li Lin shrugged. "Just a hunch, I suppose. Maybe it was its reaction earlier that gave me this feeling."
Liya contemplated for a moment. "Maybe you're right; the Starwing Beast does seem to have some special connection to the Technological Ruins."
Li Lin stood up and stretched. "So when do we set off?"
Liya glanced warily out the window. "It's almost dawn; we should rest a bit longer and leave when it gets dark."
Li Lin nodded and found a comfortable spot to sit.
He looked down at the sleeping Xing'er, his mind filled with countless questions.
What exactly are the Technological Ruins like?
Is there really technology that can change the fate of the wasteland?
What connection does Xing'er have with that place?
More importantly, can he fully trust Liya?
How many secrets does this mysterious woman hold?
With a mind full of questions, Li Lin closed his eyes.
He knew that ahead of them lay an adventure filled with the unknown and danger.
But at this moment, they needed to gather their strength and prepare for the challenges to come.
