Li Lin pressed against the wall of the basement, his heart still racing. Xing'er nestled in his arms, seemingly trying to comfort him.
"We need to get out of here quickly, little one," Li Lin whispered, taking a deep breath as he stood up.
He cautiously peeked out, confirming that the area was clear before slipping out of the basement with Xing'er. Shadows loomed heavily among the ruins, and every dark corner could harbor danger.
Li Lin moved through the debris with the agility of a cat, his senses alert for any potential threats or useful supplies.
Suddenly, the outline of an abandoned factory came into view. Li Lin squinted, carefully assessing the dilapidated structure.
"There might be supplies in there," he murmured to himself, "but it could also be dangerous."
Xing'er let out a soft chirp, seemingly in agreement. Li Lin patted its head and slowly approached the factory.
The factory's entrance was rusted shut, but Li Lin easily pushed open a gap and slipped inside. The interior was spacious, filled with discarded machines and clutter.
Li Lin searched meticulously within the factory, not overlooking any corner that might conceal supplies. Suddenly, his gaze was drawn to a concealed door.
"That...," Li Lin said softly, a glimmer of excitement flashing in his eyes.
He hurried toward the door, his fingers lightly brushing over the frame. A fine dust cloud dispersed, revealing a hidden keypad lock.
Li Lin furrowed his brow as he examined the lock's mechanism. Years of military experience made him familiar with such devices.
"It seems there's something significant hidden here," he muttered to himself as he began attempting to crack the code.
Just then, footsteps suddenly echoed from behind him. Li Lin's muscles tensed instantly as he spun around into a defensive stance.
A lithe woman appeared in his line of sight, gripping a sharp dagger in her hand. Their eyes locked in an electric moment of tension.
"Who are you?" she asked coldly, her gaze filled with suspicion.
Li Lin did not respond but slowly took a step back, positioning Xing'er behind him. "I'm just a passing traveler, I don't want to cause any trouble."
"A traveler?" the woman scoffed. "In this place, no one is an innocent traveler. You're sent by the raiders, aren't you?"
Li Lin's pupils constricted as he realized he had stumbled into a dangerous situation. "You've misunderstood, I'm not a raider."
The woman did not believe him and became even more guarded. "Stop pretending! I know you all have been trying to get your hands on the supplies here. Let me see what kind of scum you've sent today!"
Before she finished speaking, the woman lunged at him like a leopard. Li Lin quickly dodged while gently pushing Xing'er aside.
"Don't misunderstand, I'm really not..." Li Lin explained while evading, but the woman gave him no chance to speak.
The sharp dagger sliced through the air, glinting menacingly as Li Lin barely managed to defend himself with his extensive combat experience. However, he did not want to harm her, which put him at a disadvantage.
"Who are you? Why aren't you fighting back?" the woman questioned as she attacked, her tone laced with confusion.
Li Lin remained silent, continuing to evade. He knew that any explanation at this moment would seem futile.
Just then, Xing'er let out a sharp cry. Blinding blue light erupted from it, instantly filling the entire space.
"What is this..." The woman widened her eyes in surprise, her movements involuntarily halting.
Seizing the opportunity, Li Lin stepped back a few paces to create distance. "Are you willing to listen to my explanation now?"
The woman fell silent for a moment before slowly lowering her dagger. "Go ahead, who exactly are you? And what is that glowing little creature?"
Li Lin took a deep breath and briefly explained his identity and background. When he mentioned the Starwing Beast, a flicker of shock crossed the woman's eyes.
"Starwing Beast..." she murmured to herself, "I can't believe it actually exists."
"Do you know about the Starwing Beast?" Li Lin asked, a hint of surprise in her voice.
The woman nodded. "My name is Liya, and I am a member of the Wasteland Watchers. We have been searching for special creatures like the Starwing Beast."
Li Lin furrowed her brow. "Wasteland Watchers? What kind of organization is that?"
Liya did not answer immediately; instead, she glanced around cautiously. "This isn't a safe place to talk. Follow me, and I'll take you somewhere secure."
Li Lin hesitated for a moment, but Xing'er moved closer to Liya, seemingly sensing her goodwill.
"Alright," Li Lin said, nodding. "But I hope you can explain everything clearly."
Liya smiled mysteriously. "Trust me, you'll find out soon enough. And you might discover that you are more important to the Starwing Beast than you realize."
Just as they were about to leave, a loud explosion echoed from a distance. Immediately after, a chilling roar filled the air.
Li Lin and Liya exchanged glances, shock and fear reflected in their eyes.
"What was that..." Li Lin's voice trembled.
Liya's expression turned grave. "We need to get out of here quickly. The real danger is just beginning."
