Autumn Wind The air was crisp, and the night was as dark as ink. Suddenly, the tranquility of Riverside was shattered by a faint wailing sound, deep and lingering, as if it were a call from another world. I instinctively halted my steps, straining to listen and discern the source of the sound.
"Oh no!"
Bathed in the dim light of the moon, a pale female corpse lay on the muddy bank of the river, her face wearing an inexplicable smile that sent chills down my spine. My heart raced as I quickly approached the body.
I crouched down, examining the nameless corpse closely. The pallor of her skin was striking under the moonlight; she was completely naked, and a gaping hole marred her chest. The dried blood that flowed like a small river told a grim tale of her final moments.
"Her heart! It's gone!"
I took a deep breath, the air thick with the scent of death.
"This is not an ordinary case."
I murmured to myself as I stood up and scanned my surroundings. The serenity of Riverside was once again broken by my footsteps; aside from the rustling wind and the sound of water, there was no other noise.
I took out my phone to notify my colleagues for assistance. As I did so, my gaze fell back on the corpse, and to my horror, I noticed that her eyes had somehow opened, and something seemed to flicker within her hollow eye sockets...
My heart skipped a beat, fear rising from the depths of my being like never before.
"Lin Yu, suppress your fear. You are 'Nightmare,' feared even by ghosts."
I silently encouraged myself. Taking another deep breath, I tried to calm my emotions. Then I crouched down again to closely observe the corpse's eyes. I realized that the crimson glow seemed to guide me toward a certain direction. Leaning closer to the body, I followed the light's direction and spotted a vague white shadow floating in the middle of the river far away. The shadow slowly drifted toward my right side.
Following its lead, I walked to the right. To my astonishment, the shadow gradually drew nearer to me...
"Who are you? Is that you lying over there?"
I called out to the approaching White Shadow. It stopped about five steps away from me.
"Bone... Mountain..."
"Save... Evil..."
The White Shadow grew fainter until it vanished completely.
Yes, I possessed an ability that ordinary people did not have—"to hear the voices of Vengeful Spirits." This was one of the reasons I joined 'Nightmare.'
"Mom, Take Care of My Red Wedding Dress, don't let me die too soon..."
The ringtone of my phone echoed eerily in this moonlit night.
"Lin Yu, where are you? We have arrived at the crime scene."
"I'll be right there!"
I put away my phone and looked around once more, ensuring I hadn't missed any clues. At that moment, I noticed some footprints near the riverbank, clearly visible in the mud.
I walked over to examine the footprints closely. Their size and shape indicated they belonged to an adult male. Following the direction of the prints, it seemed they led downstream along the river.
"These footprints might belong to the killer," I thought, deciding to track them.
After following the prints for a while, I found that they disappeared at a small dock by the river. A small boat was moored there, gently rocking, and it seemed there was someone on board!
I quickly turned off my flashlight and hid on one side of the boat, quietly waiting for the person to come down. Before long, a shadow stepped off the boat. I held my breath, ready to respond to whatever might happen next. I crept closer, preparing to subdue him in one swift move.
However, just as I was about to act, a plume of red smoke rose up, and the shadow vanished right before my eyes!
