Ziya and Zhiqing recorded their statements at the police station. Unable to communicate with Sun Meng, they had no choice but to return home. Liang Chao's body was stored in the hospital morgue, and eventually, his parents were notified to come. Naturally, they wept bitterly; it was heart-wrenching to see a parent bury their child.
During her time at the police station, Sun Meng acted out irrationally, crying softly, making it impossible to take her statement. Reluctantly, after consulting with her family, the police decided to send her to a psychiatric hospital for a thorough examination. After several rounds of testing, Sun Meng was diagnosed with a personality disorder that had transitioned into schizophrenia. Once confirmed, this diagnosis changed her motive for murder to one of unconsciousness. Sun Meng would spend the rest of her life in the psychiatric hospital, leaving Ziya, Anqing, Liu Haoming, and Zhiqing unsure whether to feel relieved or sorrowful upon hearing the news.
Ziya and Zhiqing visited Sun Meng at the Fourth Psychiatric Hospital. When they appeared before her, she looked at them with unfamiliar eyes. Holding a towel in her arms and resting it on her elbow, she softly murmured, "Don't cry, Mommy loves you, Daddy loves you," while rhythmically swaying her body.
Ziya's eyes were filled with tears as he gazed at his pitiful childhood friend, sister, and companion. He longed to uncover the secrets of her heart and understand how she had ended up like this. Zhiqing was worried about Ziya's tears and handed her a tissue while embracing her.
"We agreed not to cry when we came out; look at you."
"No, maybe I really never cared for her enough; I just thought she was happy and envied her. I never expected Mengmeng would end up like this. I'm truly sorry for her." Leaning on Zhiqing's shoulder, Ziya finally couldn't hold back the flood of tears that streamed down onto Zhiqing's clothes and into Ziya's heart.
"Alright, stop blaming yourself for everything. For my sake and yours, you need to be okay. Sun Meng should genuinely be happy now; look at her—she's not in pain but living in another space of herself, reminiscing about the days spent with Liang Chao. Maybe it's better this way." Zhiqing gently wiped away Ziya's tears and quickly led her away from the observation window.
With Liang Chao dead and Sun Meng in madness, Ziya felt lost as she tried to find clues from the past but didn't know where to start.
"Let's go to the Second Hospital." Ziya decided to investigate starting from Liang Chao's body. According to her father, Liang Chao's cause of death was not only due to excessive blood loss but also involved another factor.
"Uh, alright!" Zhiqing agreed as she embraced Ziya and headed toward the door. As they reached the entrance, a man wearing sunglasses approached them; one was entering while the other was exiting, leading to an accidental collision.
The man paused for a moment before bursting into hearty laughter as if he could see through Ziya and Zhiqing behind his dark lenses. He waved at them with a grin and said, "Hey, old classmates! How could you forget me?"
Ziya and Zhiqing were increasingly confused; he referred to them as classmates—was he a high school classmate or something? Yet his face seemed entirely unfamiliar.
"Who are you?" Zhiqing asked, puzzled.
"I, heh heh, sorry about that." The other person took off his sunglasses, revealing a face that Ziya would never forget for the rest of her life.
"You..." This person was the wealthy senior from middle school.
"Heh heh, I hope you two won't hold a grudge for my past ignorance. I've been wanting to apologize to you both; it's just unfortunate that it happened today."
"That's nothing; it's all in the past. I would have forgotten if you hadn't mentioned it," Zhiqing said with a generous smile, nodding at him.
"Uh, I work nearby. If you ever need help, just let me know. Here's my business card."
Ziya initially wanted to refuse, but seeing the other person's respectful demeanor made it hard to turn down his goodwill. Besides, those were old stories from long ago. Everyone was immature back then! With that thought, Ziya smiled and accepted the business card. After some more small talk, the three of them said their goodbyes.
"You say he's really changed a lot; he's handsome and speaks differently than he did in middle school—so refined. Not bad at all," Zhiqing said as she put her arm around Ziya's shoulder with a grin.
"Knowing someone’s face doesn’t mean knowing their heart. You still haven't changed; you're always so naive," Ziya teased, raising an eyebrow.
"Haha, being kind to others is beneficial to oneself; one should prioritize happiness in life." Zhiqing knew that Ziya was worried about her, and she felt sweetly satisfied. The two linked arms and walked out the door, driving towards Second Hospital.
Ziya and Zhiqing arrived at Second Hospital, only to find they had missed their chance. Liang Chao's parents learned that Sun Meng was deemed mentally unstable and could not be held criminally responsible for her actions. Though they couldn't understand it no matter how many times they tried, they had to accept that the law was the law. They took Liang Chao's body back to prepare for cremation at the funeral home. It was truly ironic; if Ziya and Zhiqing had arrived just an hour earlier, they could have seen Liang Chao's body.
It was too late to rush to the funeral home, so Zhiqing decided to find the doctor who had once treated Liang Chao to inquire about what had happened. Initially, the doctor refused to disclose any patient information on privacy grounds, but when Zhiqing pulled out a hundred-dollar bill, he relented.
It turned out that there was another substance within Liang Chao's body that kept him in a state of constant excitement. In other words, this substance was the kind of inferior "Viagra" that was strictly prohibited from being sold on the market. Did Liang Chao consume it himself, or was there another reason?
Ziya and Zhi Qing emerged from the Second Hospital with heavy hearts, suddenly recalling Liang Chao's clinic. They decided to head over to the clinic to check it out. Rushing towards the clinic, they were stunned by what they saw—it was no longer there. When had it transformed into a Barber Shop? Inside the Barber Shop sat several customers waiting for their haircuts. What was going on? Ziya felt as if he might faint.
They approached to inquire and learned that after Liang Chao's incident, his parents had transferred the clinic to the Barber Shop. All the medications and other items from the clinic had been sold off at a low price by Liang Chao's parents.
What seemed like a simple matter became complicated for Ziya and Zhi Qing. If it were truly simple, it would have been better; however, Ziya had many questions in his heart that he could not clarify. It wasn't until Ziya finally uncovered the truth behind everything that he realized there were malicious hands lurking in the shadows, watching their every move.
The incident involving Sun Meng came to a close, but each time they visited Liang Chao's grave, it inevitably stirred up some sorrowful feelings.
Meanwhile, all the questions surrounding Liang Chao's case remained unresolved, troubling Zhi Qing's mind. The house that Sun Meng and the others had purchased was also being relocated due to renovations in an old building, replaced by a brand new structure. At this point, everything had changed; only memories lingered in the hearts of those who experienced that story.
