Ziya's face was beaming with joy in the living room, making it hard to believe she had just been crying in the bathroom. She shared the news of Liang Chao and Sun Meng reconciling with everyone present, including Severe Cold, Zhiqing, and even Zhiqing's Apprentice, who all smiled shyly upon hearing the good news.
Severe Cold took the opportunity to tease Ziya, and after a round of hearty jokes, Liang Chao and Sun Meng appeared at the doorway of the living room and hallway. Instantly, everyone stopped smiling, their gazes fixed on the couple like spotlights.
"Ha ha, what are you all talking about? You look so happy!" Liang Chao said as he wrapped his arm around Sun Meng's waist and led her to sit beside Ziya on the sofa.
"We were discussing your wedding plans and how this house might need a bit of rearranging. I feel like the original decor is too dark; don’t you think?" Ziya tossed the topic over to Severe Cold, prompting him to elaborate.
Severe Cold silently scolded Ziya for her clever deflection; they hadn’t mentioned anything about renovations or weddings earlier. Was she intentionally putting him on the spot? He thought this as he smoothly followed Ziya's lead. To be honest, now that he was in the room, he took a serious look at its condition.
The deep purple crown moldings, deep purple baseboards, and dark furniture dominated the space. The overall color scheme indeed cast a dim and gloomy atmosphere throughout the house.
"Well, if you ask me—and I know you might not want to hear this—this isn’t a house for our generation. You’re saving money by keeping these outdated things that not only lack any freshness but also carry some bad vibes left behind by others," Severe Cold said sharply.
"Brilliant! Every word is a gem; it all makes perfect sense," Zhiqing agreed.
"Weren't you two supposed to do something about this before moving in? Maybe some trendy superstitious rituals or something?" Severe Cold knew Zhiqing was joking and deliberately directed his comment towards him.
"Uh..." Liang Chao showed an awkward expression, squeezing out a word through clenched teeth as he turned to glance at Sun Meng. She had remained silent, her arm tightly linked with Ziya's as if they were long-lost friends suddenly reunited in a moment of unspoken understanding.
After Severe Cold finished speaking, there was a brief pause lasting a few seconds.
Zhiqing picked up his cup for a sip of water and handed it to his apprentice, signaling him to refill it. Clearing his throat, he said, "Now that we’re on this topic, since I work in this field, let me give you some advice. Whenever buying or renting a house, you must observe proper etiquette. This etiquette isn’t just for the living; it doesn’t mean there are necessarily bad things lurking in the house. However, one must consider everything comprehensively—regardless of whether the house is clean or if anything exists within it—you need to be prepared before stepping inside."
"How do we do this?" Liang Chao asked, his eyes wide open. After thinking it over, he remembered how Sun Meng had been nagging about calling Zhiqing over. He had blocked that idea, reasoning that Zhiqing was just a fraud who scammed people out of their money, and he genuinely looked down on him.
"The house is just a small space. If it's left empty for too long, some inexplicable things might move in. So when someone enters, they should hold incense and respectfully call out, 'Please make way, let the path be clear.' If there's a strange coldness flowing after entering, you need to be cautious and check if the previous owner did something bad that left behind unclean things. In that case, you’ll have to go through some trouble to find out why the previous owner moved out. You shouldn't leave anything in the house; everything must be cleared away. After moving out the furniture, you can bring in your own. This way, anything that doesn’t belong will naturally leave."
"Oh, I see! No wonder when our family Anqing moved, she walked around the house with incense before letting me in," Ziya chimed in, echoing Zhi Qing's words.
"In this city, there are no farms to worry about. In the countryside, when building or setting up even a small doghouse, you have to sprinkle rice-washing water to ensure peace while constructing," Severe Cold said with a gentle smile.
Listening to his friends, Liang Chao felt a bit embarrassed and chuckled awkwardly. "Well, what should I do about this house?" After this incident, he seemed to have lost his own opinions and asked them with a tone lacking confidence.
"If we pry it open, we’ll renovate it. Your wedding is in half a month; we have time. Anqing Mama said she would cover the renovation costs," Ziya replied.
"Ziya." Upon hearing this, Sun Meng gratefully grasped Ziya's hand tightly and didn’t want to let go for a long time. The few men present were touched as well, falling into brief contemplation without saying a word.
"Alright, soon you'll be the bride. Don't let me see the ugliest bride," Ziya gently comforted Sun Meng.
"Ziya, for our wedding, you’ll be the maid of honor. You can decide who the best man will be," Liang Chao said, breaking the temporary calm like an explosive.
Severe Cold and Zhiqing both fixed their eyes on Ziya, eager to hear who she would choose as the best man. Sun Meng and Liang Chao were also looking at her with anticipation.
"How about Zhiqing? Our class monitor! What do you all think?" Ziya suggested with a twinkle in her eye while deliberately avoiding someone's disappointed gaze and smiling brightly at Liang Chao and Sun Meng.
Zhiqing was certainly happy but pretended to remain calm as he chuckled lightly. He took a hearty sip from the cup handed to him by his disciple as if drinking honey. Someone’s face turned sour with anger but couldn’t express it; after a moment of silence, they excused themselves and left.
Severe Cold had left, taking with it Ziya's last lingering thoughts. Zhi Qing effortlessly assisted Sun Meng in managing all the materials needed for the renovations, while also helping her prepare the wedding guest list and other details.
Anqing later joined in the preparations for Sun Meng's wedding. Liang Chao's home was filled with laughter, warmth, and a lively atmosphere. It seemed as though life would continue on this way, but what happened next was entirely unexpected.
Ziya helped Sun Meng choose her bridal gown, while Zhi Qing assisted Liang Chao in managing the renovations. Liang Chao spent more time at home and even changed his phone number, determined to build a life with Sun Meng.
However, Sun Meng's emotions were undergoing subtle changes. She enjoyed sitting quietly by herself, and sometimes even Ziya found herself bewildered by the sudden shifts in her mood.
