Liang Chao's words startled them all, leaving them unsure of what he had actually heard.
"What did you hear?" Severe Cold asked as he handed Liang Chao a cigarette, looking up at him.
"I know... I know this time you all helped me a great deal. I thank you, thank you." Liang Chao seemed a bit emotional as he clasped his fists in gratitude, nodding to Ziya, Zhiqing, Severe Cold, and Zhiqing's Apprentice, who was sitting on the armrest of the sofa.
"You won't blame us for taking your house down, or for me knocking you out with a punch, will you?" Severe Cold teased.
"No, not at all. By the way, Zhiqing, I want to ask you something." Liang Chao smiled apologetically at Severe Cold and nodded at Ziya before calling out to Zhiqing.
Zhiqing silently nodded back at Liang Chao, and the two of them got up to head toward the kitchen.
"What do you think they are discussing?" Severe Cold asked as he watched Liang Chao and Zhiqing gesturing in the kitchen. The kitchen's glass was soundproof with floral patterns, so they could only see their movements from the living room without hearing any sound.
In fact, Ziya sensed that Liang Chao was asking Zhiqing something important. Given all the bizarre events that had happened recently with Sun Meng, it would be strange if Liang Chao didn't have any feelings or questions about it. Moreover, Zhiqing was in this line of work; if he didn't ask Zhiqing, who else would he ask? However, Ziya wouldn't share her thoughts with Severe Cold. She took a sip of her cold water and cast a thoughtful glance at Liang Chao and Severe Cold.
"I don't know and I don't want to guess what others are doing or saying." As she spoke, she offered a gentle smile that revealed the dimples hidden at the corners of her mouth and her pearly white teeth.
"Well then! How have you been lately?" Severe Cold asked, tactfully steering the conversation back to Ziya.
Ziya glanced at Zhiqing's apprentice, who was watching television intently beside her. Instead of directly answering Severe Cold's question, she tentatively replied, "What about you? You go first!"
"To be honest, I got married and now have a nearly one-year-old son." Severe Cold's words struck Ziya like a thunderbolt, hitting her hard. She froze for a moment before hurriedly lifting her cup to mask the profound sense of loss that welled up inside her.
"Uh... well... congratulations..." After a brief moment, she pretended to cough from the water and awkwardly nodded at Severe Cold before hurriedly walking into the hallway and entering the bathroom.
Gently closing the bathroom door behind her, she leaned against it, unable to stop the tears that streamed down her face. Why was she crying? How could she lose control upon hearing that the other person had started a family? Ziya didn't want to delve into it; she just wanted to cry her heart out.
Looking at herself in the bathroom mirror, Ziya wiped away her tears and forced various smiles, trying to mask the fact that she had rushed in here to cry. But those fake smiles felt like a lifeless puppet's face, completely different from her natural expressions before. She hated herself for being weak, for being useless, for being insincere. Taking a deep breath, she tried to suppress the urge to cry again. How would she face them later? Her eyes were clearly red; if she went out looking like this, they would definitely question why she had been crying in the bathroom. What should she do? Ziya bit her lip and thought carefully.
Right! She could check on Sun Meng to avoid Severe Cold and the others! With this thought, Ziya feigned a relaxed demeanor as she opened the bathroom door, bypassing the living room and heading straight to Sun Meng's bedroom.
Pushing open the bedroom door, Ziya froze. She saw Sun Meng sitting upright on the bed, staring blankly at the floor as if something bizarre had caught her attention.
"Mengmeng, are you okay? Don't scare me," Ziya said softly as she entered.
Sun Meng turned her head slowly to look at Ziya, her gaze cold and unsettling, lingering on her for several seconds before suddenly lying back stiffly on the bed.
Ziya trembled in shock, too afraid to move. It took her a while to catch her breath and recover from the fear. She suppressed the urge to scream—not because she wasn't scared, but because she was concerned about having just cried in the bathroom. If she shouted, they would all rush in immediately, and then they would see her in such a state.
The light in the bedroom was dim; the curtains seemed thick. Ziya felt an impulse to pull them open. With this thought in mind, she stepped forward and grabbed the cord of the curtain track. After a rustling sound, the curtains parted, allowing a strong beam of light to flood into the room. However, Ziya didn't notice that as she pulled open the curtains, a shadow darted from Sun Meng and slipped into the nearby wardrobe.
When Ziya finished adjusting the curtains and turned back to look at Sun Meng, she found her glancing sideways at her.
"Ziya," Sun Meng called out clearly.
"My dear Mengmeng, you're awake!" Ziya rushed forward to embrace her, looking her up and down while holding her hands. Tears of excitement flowed silently from her eyes.
“Ziya,” Sun Meng said in a playful tone as she leaned over and rested her head on Ziya's shoulder, sobbing softly. Outside, a few men noticed that Ziya had not come out and, curious about Sun Meng's situation, sent Liang Chao in to check.
As Liang Chao pushed open the door, he was met with a heartwarming scene: two close friends, two sisters, embracing and crying together. Sun Meng sensed someone at the door and slowly lifted her head to look at Liang Chao. Their eyes met, and for a moment, they were speechless.
“Alright, I’ll step out so you two can have a good chat,” Ziya said, wiping away Sun Meng's tears with a tissue. She smiled at Liang Chao and then turned back to Sun Meng.
Ziya walked into the living room where Zhiqing and her apprentice were engaged in conversation. Severe Cold sat alone, hugging his knees and repeatedly pressing buttons on the remote control, causing the television to display static.
“I have some good news to share. Want to hear it?” Ziya announced as she entered, causing all three of them to stop what they were doing and look at her with curiosity as she stood with her hands behind her back, wearing a mysterious expression.
“What good news? Is it that you're getting married? Hahaha!” Severe Cold joked, though it was unclear if he was being serious or just trying to cover something up. His comment fell flat, lacking humor. Zhiqing stood up and replaced the glass of cold water Ziya had just finished with a cup of hot water, gesturing for her to sit down beside him.
