"Don't worry, after he rests a bit longer, once we have everything ready, he will wake up," Severe Cold patiently replied to Ziya's question.
"Uh, when will Sun Meng wake up?"
"That's something to ask Zhiqing. I don't know," said Liang Chao, who was already quite burly, now feeling as heavy as a lump of iron. The three of them struggled to drag him along. At this point, someone asked how Sun Meng managed to get Liang Chao into the bedroom with just one person's strength. It was because at that time, Liang Chao was in a semi-conscious state; under Sun Meng's pull, he was somewhat dazedly following along, which allowed Sun Meng to easily get the taller Liang Chao onto the bed.
Let's not dwell on them for now; let's see what Severe Cold and Zhi Qing were rummaging through in the wall.
The house was an old building, with bricks weathering over time. The reason Liang Chao and the others bought this place was that they hoped to receive compensation during the second relocation and then be allocated houses of equal area.
The previous owner had renovated the house, and this wall connected to the Small Bedroom, being hollow in the middle. When the wall was pried open for the first time, a dark hole was revealed. Zhiqing instructed his apprentice to reach inside and see what was there. The apprentice approached eagerly; having stripped off his shirt due to the heat from prying the wall, he reached in barehanded. After some groping around, he pulled out a blue package.
Sun Meng lay on the sofa, breathing evenly and looking peaceful. Ziya gazed at her, feeling pity for her; she probably hadn't had such a stable sleep in a long time.
As Ziya pondered this, she saw Zhiqing and the others coming out from the corridor. Zhiqing cradled a blue package in his arms as if it were a swaddled baby.
"What is it?" Ziya asked, catching a whiff of a decaying smell in the air as she looked at Zhiqing.
"Dead Baby, something you wouldn't want to see," replied Zhiqing, frowning as he wrapped the Dead Baby in a red satin cloth he had brought along. The Dead Baby needed to be taken away by Severe Cold, who would hand it over to his comrades; they would then return it to this child's family, relatives of the original owner of the house.
The baby appeared completely desiccated, resembling a mummified corpse freshly unearthed—no flesh remained, only pitiful remnants of its body. The finger joints were intact, but there were no eyeballs in the sockets; they might have been corroded away by lime from within the wall. A few strands of fine hair hung limply over its bald skull, and a curved strip of flesh on its belly might have been the umbilical cord that connected it to its mother.
"What happened?" Ziya truly couldn't bear to look at the Dead Baby, instead standing still and asking with an expression that seemed both confused and understanding.
"Isn't there an unborn baby in the story? This is it," Severe Cold explained to Ziya as he wrapped the baby in red satin.
"But why would a woman hide a dead baby in the wall? What was her intention? Why would she do such a thing?"
Zhiqing looked at Ziya and Severe Cold, pondering her question for a moment before saying, "Maternal instinct is fragile, but there is another side to it that is unknown to many."
"What do you mean?" Ziya and Severe Cold asked in unison.
"She wanted the whole family to perish together, hoping to repay her guilt towards the child with her life."
"Uh, I've never heard of something so evil," Ziya shook her head.
"I have heard of it, but such actions are usually taken when one's mental state is out of control."
"Then how are we going to explain this to Liang Chao and the others later? And what about all that mess? What do we do with the room?"
As Ziya spoke, she let go of Sun Meng's hand and went to check the small bedroom they had just rummaged through. Inside was a complete disaster; dust still lingered, and the wall of the small bedroom was barely holding up against the living room wall.
"What does it matter? Aren't they getting married soon? We can just treat it as renovating their new home. We can call a few workers to fix it up, and that will be that," Severe Cold said before heading to the washroom to wash his hands. Zhiqing and his apprentice followed suit. After washing their hands thoroughly, they held them under their noses to check for any lingering scent of the dead baby. Zhiqing pulled out a cigarette and lit it, wanting to say many things but unsure where to start; some topics were truly difficult to discuss.
Ziya stared blankly at the dead baby that Severe Cold had placed down, recalling what Sun Meng had said earlier about a child haunting her. Could it be this dead baby? And why had Sun Meng become so neurotic?
Zhiqing and Severe Cold had already moved the dead baby out, and Zhiya's apprentice had cleaned the house thoroughly. A few workers were busy repairing the walls of the small bedroom.
"Ugh, that smell was terrible. What was it?"
"Pfft, if I'm not mistaken, it's Urine Smell and The Smell of Dead Babies," Severe Cold said, taking a sip of plain water in a calm tone. At that moment, they seemed to breathe a sigh of relief; at least nothing major had happened, thanks to Zhiqing. If it weren't for him, no one would dare to imagine how Liang Chao would deal with Sun Meng.
"This Urine Smell can't be..." Zhiqing's words trailed off as Liang Chao walked out from the corridor. He looked at them in confusion, listening to the sounds coming from the Small Bedroom.
"Did I walk into the wrong house? What happened? Can someone tell me what's going on?"
"Sit down; I'll explain slowly. Ziya, help Sun Meng up and take her to the inner bedroom to rest," Severe Cold instructed Ziya in a low voice.
"How can I move her by myself? You all need to help," Ziya protested.
"I'll do it." Liang Chao stepped forward quickly, casting a puzzled glance at everyone around him, his brow furrowed as he tried to remember what had happened earlier. In the end, he helplessly picked up Sun Meng and headed toward the bedroom.
"What do you think we should say to him about this?" Ziya asked, troubled. He spread his hands in frustration; everyone knew Liang Chao was a staunch traditionalist, much like Severe Cold. Would he tolerate someone illegally entering his home?
"If you're scared, I'll say it. I just saved his life; he should be grateful to us, so why worry?" Severe Cold wiped the corner of his mouth and spoke with righteous indignation.
"What did you say? I heard that," Liang Chao said flatly as he emerged from the corridor.
