Zhiqing's face suddenly twisted into a frenzy as he lunged forward. He quickly retreated, wrapping up the Yellow Paper and the items his apprentice had brought from home, igniting them and waving his hands to fill the room with smoke.
As Zhiqing danced with the smoldering herbs mixed with Yellow Paper, he continued to back away. The compass in his apprentice's hand spun wildly as Sun Meng advanced. Just then, a series of urgent knocks echoed at the door, prompting the apprentice to rush over and open it. Zhiqing kept a close watch on the changing expressions on Sun Meng's face, the smoke becoming increasingly suffocating.
Ziya and Severe Cold entered the room, immediately hit by a strange odor mingled with the scent of herbs, forcing them to cover their noses and mouths. Ziya noticed Sun Meng's disheveled hair, dripping with a foul black liquid, looking utterly lost. She instinctively moved to help but was stopped by Severe Cold.
Sun Meng, having gone days without a proper rest, was now feeling dizzy from the calming incense made by Zhiqing's mother. Her vision blurred as fatigue washed over her. The figures around her overlapped and spun, and she collapsed limply onto the floor.
"Is she okay? What did you throw on her?" Ziya rushed forward, cradling Sun Meng's head in her arms, her heart aching at the sight of her pale face.
"She's fine; it's just that she's overwhelmed and hasn't rested well, causing her to be disoriented and hallucinate," Zhiqing said with a smile as he saw the drug taking effect. He quickly extinguished the herbal pouch in his hand and discreetly signaled his apprentice to hide the compass. Zhiqing refrained from telling Ziya that he had splashed Sun Meng with black dog blood and ice cubes, fearing she would blame him for making Sun Meng smell terrible.
"Is it really that simple?" Severe Cold eyed Zhiqing suspiciously, sniffing at the lingering strange odor and herbal scent in the air.
"Cough, you think I would tell you there's a ghost here just to convince you?" Zhiqing replied as he walked to the washroom to clean his hands of dirt, speaking in a teasing tone.
"Well, it wouldn't hurt to tell you; Ziya already knows. You two are still unaware of this house's original owner's situation. We need to take a closer look," Severe Cold decided it was time to reveal the truth, clearing his throat.
Ziya helped support Sun Meng while trying to carry her to the bedroom when Zhiqing stopped them. Everyone was busy and didn't pay attention to Severe Cold's words.
"How about we settle Sun Meng on the sofa? Severe Cold can handle things in the back room," Zhiqing suggested with a wry smile, whispering a few words to a puzzled Severe Cold, who looked astonished.
"What are you two talking about?" Ziya pouted, feeling uncomfortable about the two men whispering together and pretending to be angry.
"You don't want to know, Sun Meng... she wanted to cut Liang Chao," Severe Cold said, making a scissor gesture with her fingers as she spoke to Ziya.
Ziya was speechless, secretly wondering how Sun Meng could do something so extreme. But in the story that Severe Cold told, the woman, in order to take revenge and keep the man by her side, had indeed cut off his most vital part with scissors.
That night, the woman cooked many delicious dishes, got the man drunk, and then helped him to the bedside. She unbuttoned his pants, took out that object, and with one swift cut, it was done. The woman had originally planned to apply some herbal ash to stop the bleeding after cutting it off, but she ended up falling asleep due to her drunkenness. When she suddenly woke up the next day, she found that the man's lower body was already cold and stiff from blood loss; he had died long ago. The woman did not cry; instead, she calmly washed away the bloodstains from the man’s body, dressed him properly, and then swallowed an entire bottle of pills before lying down beside him tightly embracing him.
Ziya finished telling Zhiqing the story that Severe Cold had shared. Zhiqing came out and looked at both Zhiqing and Ziya, nodding as he continued with the unfinished tale.
"Yes, later people noticed that this couple hadn't been seen for a long time and their door was tightly shut. Feeling something was amiss, they called the police. When people entered, they were met with a house full of flies and a terrible stench that made them recoil. They discovered that the couple's bodies had severely decomposed and were infested with maggots. However, the woman's belly was empty. According to neighbors, she should have been at term in her pregnancy; where was the child? This became a mystery, which is why my comrade asked me to help investigate until everything was clarified."
After hearing Severe Cold's story, Zhiqing couldn't help but gasp. His instincts were not wrong; however, he couldn't voice them. His apprentice had just quietly informed him that there was something wrong in the adjacent Small Bedroom.
"Cough cough, let's go check out the Small Bedroom," Zhiqing said as he headed there with Severe Cold and his apprentice. Ziya remained by the sleeping Sun Meng's side under their unspoken suggestion.
The stain on the wall of the Small Bedroom near the living room was quite conspicuous. "Are you saying that stain is suspicious?" Severe Cold asked as she looked at Zhiqing.
"Perhaps! I don't know if there are any tools here; let's pry it open and take a look," Zhiqing replied to Severe Cold. He then pointed to his apprentice beside him: "Go check if they have a toolbox in their storage room. If you find one, bring back a hammer or any tool that can pry open the wall."
"Got it." The apprentice quickly left but couldn't find the storage room.
"It's over by the kitchen balcony; go check there. I remember seeing Sun Meng putting some clutter over there last time."
"Thank you, ma'am." The young man spoke sweetly; he had already considered Ziya as his Master's Wife. Although he wanted to address her directly, he hesitated for fear of being too forward.
"Ha, just call me sister; I don't think I'm that old yet!" Ziya said with a wry smile, shaking her head teasingly.
Liang Chao slowly regained his senses, moving his body and realizing he felt sore and weak all over. After a while, he cautiously tried to get up, swaying as he walked out of the bedroom. As he stepped into the hallway, he heard a dull thudding sound coming from the Small Bedroom. Who was renovating? Something felt off; could it be that the soundproofing in his house was really that bad?
Thinking this, Liang Chao approached the Small Bedroom and saw three people inside, dust swirling around as they pried at the walls.
"What are you doing?" Liang Chao suddenly appeared, startling Zhiqing and Severe Cold, who were taken aback by his presence, especially since he still looked half-asleep. Without missing a beat, Severe Cold stepped forward and punched him on the temple.
Severe Cold's action shocked Zhiqing. "What are you doing?" Zhiqing asked, wiping the dust from his face in confusion.
"We need to take him down so we can work. With him here making noise, it's hard to get anything done. Besides, if he sees us messing with his room, there's no way he'll let us off easy."
"True enough. Let's give him a hand and get him back to bed so he can sleep a bit longer," Zhiqing called out to his apprentice as they lifted Liang Chao onto the bed.
Hearing the commotion, Ziya sensed something was wrong and hurried over to check. Just in time, she saw the three of them carrying Liang Chao toward the master bedroom.
"What have you done to him?"
