Ziya suppressed her nausea as she watched Liang Chao turn back to retrieve his car keys from the clinic. Zhiqing had received a call from Severe Cold, who asked to meet him at De Yi Lou.
"Ziya, I'm heading over there. Wait for me here, I'll be right back," Zhiqing said before jogging off to his car. Once Zhiqing was gone, Ziya shifted her gaze back to Liang Chao, who was opening the trunk.
As Liang Chao opened the trunk, he noticed a slight deformation; he couldn't recall when the car had been hit or why it looked like this. Moreover, after unlocking it with the key, he found that the trunk lid seemed stuck and wouldn't pop open. He pulled hard with both hands, and with a loud click, the lid sprang open unexpectedly.
A foul smell immediately assaulted Liang Chao's nostrils, making him feel sick enough to vomit. The stench forced him to turn away from the car, stepping back a few paces before taking deep breaths.
"What’s wrong?" Ziya asked, noticing something odd about Liang Chao as she walked toward the front of the car. Suddenly, she caught a whiff of the same terrible odor, reminiscent of rotten fish and shrimp from a seafood market.
How could there be such a smell in the car? Did Liang Chao buy seafood? As Ziya thought this, she leaned over to look into the trunk. The sight made her scalp tingle with horror; a chill ran down her spine as if icy fingers were creeping into her body, reaching up to her head and causing her hair roots to prickle.
YaYa was curled up inside the car, her fingernails bloodied as if she had been clawing at something desperately. Her legs were bent awkwardly in front of her as if she were pushing against the trunk lid. Her wide-open eyes showed only the whites; her pupils were nowhere to be seen. Thin trails of blood streamed from the corners of her eyes onto the blanket in Liang Chao's car.
YaYa still wore that revealing outfit, but now all semblance of beauty was gone; she looked terrifying instead. Her mouth was agape, and the lipstick she had applied earlier had turned into a grotesque shade of purple. Several short, thick white maggots crawled out of her mouth due to the sudden rush of air, wriggling toward her chin before accidentally falling onto her neck.
Ziya stumbled back a few steps while Liang Chao stood frozen in shock at what lay before him. The image of YaYa forced itself into his mind. Overwhelmed by disbelief and weakness, it felt as if he had personally killed her. Despair washed over him as he gripped his hair in terror. Ziya's face paled in fear; she couldn't believe what she was seeing.
"Call... call the police! You... you’re insane! Why did you kill her?" Ziya trembled as she looked at passersby who covered their mouths while walking by, unable to see clearly what was happening at the rear of Liang Chao's car but cursing under their breath due to the foul odor.
"It... it’s not my fault! I don’t know how she ended up in the trunk! Really... Ziya, you have to believe me."
Sweat poured down Liang Chao's forehead like raindrops, streaming down his face and neck before hitting the ground and evaporating under the scorching sun. He felt overwhelmed and dazed, completely unaware of when YaYa had gotten into his trunk. His tongue felt tied as he struggled to speak coherently; after what felt like an eternity, he finally managed to dial 110. The police arrived quickly with sirens blaring, taking both Liang Chao and his car away while Ziya accompanied them to give her statement.
When the Investigator detected that the deceased, Lin Yaya, had indeed entered the trunk herself, leading to the inhalation of a large amount of car exhaust, severe oxygen deprivation combined with poisoning resulted in serious burns to her respiratory system, causing asphyxiation. She had several hundred dollars in her pocket, and her phone displayed a dead battery, already blacked out. The Investigator removed Yaya's phone battery, charged it fully with a universal charger, and found that her last call was made four days ago, on the day Liang Chao went to see her.
Liang Chao also spoke about Severe Cold in front of the Investigator. He quickly contacted Zhi Qing, who was with Severe Cold. Upon hearing the news, they were both extremely shocked. They immediately went to the police station to be questioned and provide statements. He recounted what happened after Yaya received the money.
Yaya was naturally overjoyed when she received the money from Severe Cold. She was calculating her next steps and had secretly decided to find Liang Chao. She knew exactly where Liang Chao went; this girl was meticulous. She had previously learned that Liang Chao had a lover in a certain neighborhood and had quietly kept an eye on his movements.
Using her memory, Yaya took a taxi to Liang Chao's lover's place. Upon arriving at the neighborhood, she found the parking lot and indeed saw Liang Chao's car parked not far away. As she approached to get a better look inside the car, she realized the tinted windows made it impossible to see anything inside. She circled around the car, peering in and trying to pull on the door handle, but it was futile. Yaya pouted in frustration for a while. When her gaze shifted from the front of the car to the back, a thought struck her: there was an opportunity; Master Liang Chao had a bad habit of always forgetting to lock the trunk.
If she could sneak into the trunk, she could observe Master’s whereabouts without being noticed and also ask him for Ziya's phone number. If all else failed, she could follow him home and shamelessly ask Master's Wife for it. Just thinking about Master's Wife, Sun Meng, made Yaya shiver; she didn’t know if it was because she felt guilty or if Master's Wife knew something. Regardless, every time she saw Master's Wife, she felt like her gaze was unnervingly piercing.
After climbing into the trunk, Yaya happily counted the cash that Severe Cold had given her. Looking at her old and outdated phone again, she realized that after just a little use—surprisingly—it had run out of battery. Annoyed, Yaya stuffed the money back into her pocket. She wanted to throw away her phone but ultimately decided to put it back in her clothing pocket as she quietly waited for Master to come down from upstairs.
