Ziya leaned back in the chair, closing his eyes as he dozed off. In his mind, the figure of Severe Cold lingered like an obsession that he couldn't shake off.
Time always comes gently and leaves quietly, without a trace of clouds. Ziya and the others had been back in City A for some days now, and the memories of the past were gradually fading away.
Beijing Reform was the largest regulatory area in D City. Severe Cold saw that his parents were aging and frail, and with no other choice, he had to give up his beloved job to find a position in a local government department, hoping for a proper arrangement.
After several days of waiting, he received confirmation that he was assigned to be a city management officer. Although Severe Cold was not entirely satisfied with this job, he accepted the arrangement from his superiors with a sense of resignation, as he needed to care for his elderly parents. During his time at work, he performed exceptionally well. Coupled with his own qualities, eloquence, and outstanding ability to get things done, he earned recognition from his superiors and was promoted to office director in no time.
While there was nothing much happening during work hours, whenever he found himself idle, Ziya's voice and smile would endlessly surface in his mind. Severe Cold tried to forget her—he turned off his phone, sent texts, left messages—all to no avail.
Severe Cold inherited the virtue of filial piety from Chinese culture. While thinking about Ziya, he felt torn between family obligations. His parents noticed this and secretly arranged for someone to introduce him to a potential bride.
When his cousin brought home a beautiful and virtuous woman, his parents happily agreed to this match behind their son's back. In rural tradition, where unfilial behavior is considered grave and having children is paramount, Severe Cold's child was soon on the way. Meanwhile, Ziya remained unaware that Severe Cold had already married and had a child.
Since that decisive conversation with Ziya, Severe Cold—now a father—felt it was time to let go of this one-sided long-distance relationship. Thus, he stopped contacting her. Until one day when Severe Cold traveled to City C and passed through City A; suddenly, he remembered Liang Chao's phone number.
Sun Meng had resigned from the hospital to work at a clinic, and for quite some time everything went smoothly. Ya Ya moved out from Liang Chao's home to stay in the hospital dormitory; this was the outcome Sun Meng desired.
Sun Meng felt delighted inside but it was tough on Liang Chao, whose every move was under Sun Meng's watchful eye. Yet there was little he could do; if things continued like this, perhaps it would lead to a good ending. Some matters truly cannot be controlled by human effort.
Liang Chao received a phone call—just one call—and surely Sun Meng wouldn't interfere! Answering the phone with a cheerful expression that spoke volumes without words, Liang Chao said, "I have to step out this afternoon; an old classmate I haven't contacted in a while wants to meet up."
"Well, the earlier you go, the earlier you come back." Sun Meng's face showed a hint of fatigue, her spirit weary, and her tone seemed to have lost its sharpness. Her admonition felt rather powerless, and there was an underlying sense of helplessness in her expression.
The call Liang Chao received was from his former apprentice and lover, YaYa. He drove swiftly to the café YaYa had mentioned, where a waiter came out to assist him with parking. As he entered the dimly lit café, he spotted YaYa's silhouette at table eight from a distance. She had matured significantly, her figure fuller, dressed in a red leather jacket that hugged her curvaceous body.
"Hello, Master," she greeted with a bright voice and a sweet smile as she sat down next to Liang Chao. The low-cut top revealed hints of her cleavage, and her rounded hips strained against her tight skirt. The softness of her presence drew all eyes in the café, and Liang Chao felt a rush of blood surge through him, a slight impulse stirring below.
"Uh, hi," Liang Chao replied, swallowing hard. He knew that YaYa no longer worked at the hospital; she had supposedly found another job. However, he was unaware that she was now working at this café. YaYa's hand playfully reached towards Liang Chao's thigh, giving it a gentle squeeze with an almost teasing intent. They exchanged knowing smiles.
Suddenly, the phone rang. YaYa quickly withdrew her hand and shifted slightly away, signaling that she didn't want to hear about his personal matters. Liang Chao, feeling restless, answered the call with irritation, thinking it might be Sun Meng checking up on him. To his surprise, it was Severe Cold calling.
Severe Cold arrived at the café Liang Chao had chosen and spotted YaYa. Men often found themselves attracted to women, especially fresh ones. YaYa noticed that Severe Cold was even more handsome and charming than Liang Chao, exuding a mature masculinity that captivated her. Initially annoyed by this unexpected interruption that jeopardized her plans with Liang Chao, she soon felt reassured by Severe Cold's refined demeanor and decided to adjust her approach.
YaYa went off to attend to other customers while Liang Chao and Severe Cold shared a knowing smile.
"So you married Sun Meng? And still dare to come here for fun?" Severe Cold surveyed the surroundings, which he deemed rather vulgar.
"Hah, marriage? I haven't had enough fun yet. Marriage is like an invisible rope that ties you down in a dull and flavorless space," Liang Chao replied with a chuckle. He leaned closer to Severe Cold and whispered conspiratorially, "Lolis are unreliable; it's those women—look at me! Everything I'm wearing is a gift from those who have won my favor."
"Haha, well done! I must admit I'm envious of your approach," Severe Cold said with a hint of disdain in his tone as he took a sip of coffee from his cup. He absentmindedly tapped his fingers on the table as if contemplating something before tentatively asking, "How's she doing lately? You haven't gotten involved with her too, have you?"
"She's an iceberg; I'm afraid getting too close would freeze me to death. By the way, weren't you two quite good together? What happened?" Liang Chao knew he was referring to Ziya but was puzzled about how their relationship had soured.
"Sun Meng is her friend; didn't she tell you? There’s a distance between us—a chasm we can hardly cross."
"No, I really didn't tell you. We still plan to get married by the end of the year, and I want you to be my best man."
"Sure! If you invite me, I'll definitely come," Severe Cold replied with a charming smile, his eyes sparkling with maturity, confidence, and a hint of something elusive.
Meanwhile, Zhiqing had been visiting Ziya's home frequently lately, bringing this and that, all arranged intentionally by Anqing. When Anqing learned that Zhiqing's mother was into herbal medicine, she was thrilled and often asked Ziya to pass messages to Zhiqing, requesting her to bring herbs.
Sun Meng, having nothing better to do, wandered around the supermarket with Ziya, checking out items needed for the wedding. Although marriage was a matter for two people, men were indeed clueless about this aspect.
"Ziya, is that it for you and Severe Cold? It ended so abruptly," Sun Meng remarked. Whether it was due to being busy at the clinic or something else, her spirits seemed noticeably low. Ziya tried several times to ask her about it but was diverted by other topics. It seemed she was completely devoted to Liang Chao, having changed herself entirely for him.
