Ziya held the shadowy object in her hand and looked down to find a pale pink piece of paper with the image of Hades printed on it—Ghost Money. The other was Renminbi, and she felt a sudden shock and fear. Her heart raced, and as she trembled, the Ghost Money slipped from her fingers and floated down to the ground. Gazing up at the gray sky, Ziya was startled to hear what seemed like cries coming from somewhere, along with someone calling her name...
Sun Meng's tears had not stopped flowing. Zhiqing had exhausted countless words trying to make her stop crying. They were anxiously waiting outside the Emergency Room for the doctor to bring Ziya out.
"I haven't told Liang Chao yet... Ziya's parents are traveling out of town; they don't know what's happened to her. Why did she suddenly faint?" Sun Meng sobbed, her heavy breaths punctuated by sniffles, while the trash can beside them was nearly full of tissues she had used to wipe her tears.
"Uh, come on, we still don’t know what’s going on. Please don’t cry like that. Your tears are making me feel all jumbled inside," Zhiqing said, his eyes red as he fought back tears that threatened to spill over. A man shouldn't be crying in a place like this; he kept praying that Ziya would be okay and hoped that her fainting was just due to weakness.
She lay there like a beautiful ice sculpture, her long eyelashes softly resting against her eyelids, her breath barely escaping her lips. Her pale face showed signs of fatigue, the smile frozen away, yet there was a dimple that could enchant anyone. Her silky hair was covered by a white cap, and at that moment, she lay peacefully, her slender fingers adorned with various medical devices placed beside her body.
"Heart rate is low, pulse weak, pupils dilating... bleeding symptoms are ongoing," the Head Nurse reported expertly as she detailed Ziya's test results to the attending physician.
"Yes, this is a rare emergency. We should issue a critical condition notice for the family to sign. It’s better than just dragging this out aimlessly. Saving lives is our duty as medical professionals, but her situation is not optimistic; we've done our best," the doctor said in a calm tone with a stern expression.
The door to the Emergency Room creaked open, and a doctor and nurse stepped out. Sun Meng wiped her tear-streaked face and rushed toward them with Zhiqing, both filled with anxiety. Before they could speak, the doctor handed them a clipboard.
"Who is the patient's family? Sign here."
"Sign? What are we signing?" Zhiqing and Sun Meng were bewildered; they hadn’t even seen anything yet but were being asked to sign.
"The critical condition notice," the doctor said slowly through clenched teeth, as if delivering a thunderbolt that left Zhiqing and Sun Meng stunned. They shook their heads in disbelief as they looked at the doctor.
"No... please look again; Ziya isn't as serious as you think," Zhiqing said, his emotions flaring as he tried to push past the doctor and nurse blocking the Emergency Room door to see Ziya's condition inside. Sun Meng stood helplessly beside him, anxiously stamping her feet in frustration.
"What do you want to do? Stop messing around," the doctor shouted, extending his hand to block Zhiqing from rushing in. The nurse hurriedly stepped back into the Emergency Room, waiting for the doctor to enter before closing the door.
"You incompetent doctors, treating lives so carelessly! I'm going to sue you..." Zhiqing banged on the door of the Emergency Room, loudly complaining.
Sun Meng, feeling panicked, quickly took out her phone to call Liang Chao, thinking that having him there would provide another perspective. They were all in the dark about Ziya's condition, and everything was just speculation. Due to Zhiqing's commotion, it seemed the doctor had alerted the security guard, and a few men in uniforms quickly approached them.
"No... no... I'm a family member of the patient, just waiting for news," Zhiqing thought to herself as she saw their aggressive approach; a wise man doesn't suffer losses in front of others. She quickly stopped her outburst and forced a smile at the approaching men.
Sun Meng nodded in agreement from the side. She had tried calling Liang Chao, but it didn’t go through. Frustrated, she watched as the men began pushing and shoving Zhiqing.
"Hey, we're all friends of the patient here. Isn't it urgent? So..." Sun Meng said, her eyes welling up with tears again as she spoke with a choked voice.
"Alright! You need to be mindful of your behavior. Making a scene in a hospital—do you have any sense of public decency?" one burly man said gruffly.
"Uh, okay, okay," Zhiqing replied angrily, rolling up her sleeves and ignoring his words. Sun Meng, not wanting to escalate things further, nodded quickly in agreement.
Meanwhile, in the clinic, Liang Chao finished seeing his last patient and instructed the assistant to tidy up the prescriptions. He rubbed his sore neck.
"Hey, can you get me a glass of water?" Liang Chao said, turning back to YaYa.
At seventeen, YaYa was at an age full of youthful charm, her appearance fresh and lovely like a tender green onion. She was also more developed than most girls her age. Although not very literate, she was sharper than average.
YaYa brought a cup of water to Liang Chao, smiling sweetly like a pear blossom. Seeing her smile made his heart flutter. He marveled at how life could be so whimsical; usually too busy to notice such a delicate beauty in his clinic, he thought about teasing YaYa now that they were alone.
As soon as YaYa set the cup down, she instinctively tried to retract her hand. However, Liang Chao was quick to catch her delicate, tender hand, which resembled a young shoot. His eyes sparkled with a smile as he gazed at YaYa.
YaYa, in the bloom of her youth, felt a subtle yearning to explore and understand the opposite sex. Having followed Liang Chao for a year or two, their relationship had evolved beyond mere teacher and student; there seemed to be something more. When Liang Chao held her hand, a soft, playful hum escaped her lips, but she made no effort to break free from his grip. Seeing this, Liang Chao felt a surge of joy. He quickly stood up, pulled down the clinic's roller shutter, turned off his phone, and swept YaYa into his arms, carrying her into the single bed prepared for patients.
With Liang Chao holding her tightly, YaYa wrapped her arms around his neck and closed her eyes. Her heart raced wildly; that innocent desire ignited every sensitive nerve in her body. It felt as if her breath had stopped altogether. She was engulfed in warmth, her cheeks flushed with heat. Beyond the vague affection she felt for Liang Chao, there was an inexplicable sense of admiration; she hoped to give her first time to this mature and experienced man before her.
