At the break of dawn, Ziya was already up. After stretching her arms in a big yawn, she was about to head to the bathroom when she heard a commotion of hurried footsteps in the hallway. She opened her door and saw several classmates rushing outside.
"Hey, you guys are out for a run this early?" Ziya said with a long yawn.
"Something big has happened, and you still don't know?" one classmate stopped to say.
"What big thing could possibly get you all up so early?" As soon as Ziya heard this, all her sleepiness vanished, and her eyes widened in curiosity.
"The four top students from Class Two... well, you'd better see for yourself! It seems pretty serious; I have to go," the classmate said, unsure how to explain it to Ziya before making an excuse to leave.
Ziya didn’t bother with her morning routine anymore. She turned back, placed her toothbrush in the cup, and shouted at Sun Meng, who was still snuggled under the covers, "Get up! Let’s go see if there’s a fight happening!"
"Ugh... no, let me sleep for five more minutes! Just five more minutes!" Sun Meng pulled the blanket back over her head.
"If you don’t get up now, we really won’t care about you—do you believe that?" Ziya was genuinely angry now and started walking toward the dormitory door.
"Okay, okay, I’m getting up." Sun Meng finally sat up, her messy hair and sleepy eyes moving slowly. The sight only fueled Ziya's irritation further.
"Can you hurry up? We still have morning study later! At this rate, when will we ever be ready?" As she spoke, Ziya picked up her toothbrush again. Since Sun Meng wasn’t dressed yet, she figured it was better to take care of her own things first.
Ziya rarely got angry; when she did, it was like an iceberg—cold enough to chill you to the bone. Realizing this, Sun Meng quickly got out of bed and dressed faster than usual.
The side door of the school seemed closed today, but many students were gathered at the main entrance discussing something animatedly. Ziya approached and noticed some classmates from her class among them.
"What’s going on? Hey."
Instead of answering directly, one of them pulled Ziya aside and whispered urgently, "Something major happened last night. The four top students from Class Two encountered something supernatural; they’ve reportedly been transferred to another hospital."
"What happened to them?" Ziya asked, her gaze sweeping over Sun Meng. Sun Meng was the type who loved a crowd; as soon as they stepped out together, she squeezed her way into the throng of people. By the time they were talking, she had already dashed to the edge of the road outside.
"I heard from the nurse on duty at the hospital that last night, the guard at the main entrance went to buy a lighter. He heard wailing from the back door and thought it was just some night owl making noise, so he ignored it. Guess what happened next?"
"What?" Ziya's heart tightened. Wasn't it those few troublemakers from Class Two that they had seen last night? What could have happened to them? Had they really encountered the Ghost Baby?
"Apparently, they were attacked by the Ghost Baby," a classmate whispered in Ziya's ear.
"No way! Where did this happen?" Ziya looked at her in disbelief, her expression one of shock.
"If you don't believe me, it's right by the Side Door on Gravel Road. They cleared everyone out; it was a bloody scene."
"Is anyone still watching? Should we go take a look?" Ziya suggested, making a move in that direction.
"Don't bother; there's nothing to see—just a lot of blood and those disgusting things. If you don't believe me, go ask the guard. I need to grab breakfast; are you coming?" her classmate advised kindly.
"You go ahead! I still need to wait for Mengmeng," Ziya replied, noticing Sun Meng approaching and giving her classmate an apologetic smile.
"Guess what I found out?"
"Shall we check out the Side Door?" Ziya ignored Sun Meng's smug expression and gently tugged at her.
"Hey! Good morning." Today, Zhiqing wore a light blue t-shirt. His fair face bore an unexpectedly mature demeanor. When he greeted Ziya, his cheeks flushed slightly for some reason. That momentary shyness was fleeting; Zhiqing quickly composed himself and cleared his throat, stopping in his tracks.
"Good morning, class monitor," Ziya said softly, nodding demurely at Zhiqing.
"Class monitor, you won't believe what happened last night!" Sun Meng chimed in, her mouth starting to gossip again as she clasped her hands behind her back and looked at Zhiqing with a mysterious air.
"Well, we need to check on that little brat An Jian who tricked us last night," Zhiqing said with a grin, his thick eyebrows raised, seemingly unaware of what had happened.
"Forget it, maybe he's regretting it now. We might have narrowly escaped a disaster last night. Let's head somewhere," Ziya said, nodding towards Sun Meng and Zhiqing, indicating they should go to the Side Door.
The three of them avoided the gazes of other students and made their way to Gravel Road, which was covered in small pebbles mixed with concrete. The stones provided some traction, and when they arrived at the back entrance of the hospital, which was diagonally opposite the school's Side Door, they found a scene of chaos.
It seemed that whatever had happened occurred after the rain; there were several crimson stains on the ground that looked like blood. The trash can had been cleaned by the Cleaner, and the foul smell was not as strong as usual. Ziya stared at the uneven gaps between the stones on the ground, her heart racing as she noticed a droplet of dark red substance—was it blood? She immediately crouched down to investigate, following the trail towards the Side Door.
"There’s something here! Look!" Ziya exclaimed in shock. She carefully extended her finger to dab at what appeared to be sticky blood.
Zhiqing and Sun Meng were startled by Ziya's shout and came over. They all stared at the bloodstains in confusion, momentarily speechless as they followed the trail of droplets that led from the direction of the Side Door.
They searched around the corner where the bloodstains ended, but when Zhiqing looked up, he saw that the stains continued up onto the wall leading into the school...
The three of them hurried into the school, checking each spot along the wall where they saw bloodstains. The droplets gradually faded but extended all the way towards Yellow Crane Tower...
An Jian entered the classroom and immediately caught sight of Zhiqing's cold glare directed at him. He knew he had been threatened by those guys last night and that they had squeezed money out of him for beer. In that situation, it would have been foolish to betray friends just to avoid physical punishment.
"An Jian." Trying to avoid Zhiqing's gaze, he suddenly heard someone shout his name. Startled, he turned to see Sun Meng storming towards him, anger radiating from her.
