Ziya and Sun Meng turned to walk towards the classroom, startled by Wang Yuan who suddenly jumped out at them.
"You... are you trying to scare us to death?" Sun Meng exclaimed, clearly shaken, as she put her hands on her hips and glared. Ziya stood by, watching the exchange with a cool demeanor; it was amusing to see the top girl in their class squabble with the class clown.
"Shh, can you keep it down? I'm here to invite you both to explore the school tonight," Wang Yuan said.
"What?" Sun Meng looked at him, intrigued by his mysterious demeanor, and quickly lowered her voice to ask.
"Hey beautiful, come listen too!" Wang Yuan gestured for Ziya and Sun Meng to follow him to another spot.
"Let's just talk here," Ziya firmly refused to move.
"Come on, Zhiqing is still waiting over there. We can't leave him hanging!"
"I can't be bothered with you guys, disgusting creep. Let's go," Ziya said, recalling how close they had been in front of everyone earlier—it made her feel sick. Without caring whether Sun Meng followed or not, she grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the classroom.
Seeing them about to leave, Wang Yuan hurriedly stepped forward, looking desperate. "Tonight we want to check out Yellow Crane Tower. Are you coming? Zhiqing has already agreed; we're just waiting for your decision—are you in or out?"
"Is it really that interesting?" Ziya replied flatly. She suspected that Zhiqing and Wang Yuan were trying to prank them by luring them into some nonsense about Yellow Crane Tower.
"Don't be like that; I'm serious! Don't you want to know the mystery behind the crazy woman's death?" Wang Yuan saw that they were still on guard and realized they might still be upset about what happened last time. He decided to pull out this ace card. Sure enough, this piqued Ziya's interest; she stopped and scrutinized him with a meaningful look for a few seconds.
"Do you know something about the crazy woman's death? Does it have anything to do with Yellow Crane Tower?" Ziya asked. She was aware that the school had strictly forbidden any mention of this matter; Yellow Crane Tower was off-limits entirely. But what secret could Zhiqing and the others have uncovered that would lead them to dare venture there?
"Ahem..." Just as Sun Meng and Ziya were focused on wanting to hear Wang Yuan explain further, he deliberately cleared his throat. The two quickly straightened up and realized a teacher was approaching from the other end of the corridor.
"Hello, teacher," they greeted the approaching teacher hurriedly.
"Hello," the teacher nodded and walked away with a smile.
"Forget it, let's go tonight! Class is starting soon," Ziya said with a smile to Wang Yuan and Leng Qin, leading the way to the classroom. Sun Meng followed closely behind, glancing back at Wang Yuan, who seemed to be heading off somewhere else—probably to call their Class Monitor Zhiqing. What a loyal little puppy he was.
Sun Meng silently cursed Wang Yuan as Ziya had already entered the classroom. This class seemed to be Health Education, where the boys were joking and laughing, creating a lively atmosphere. The girls appeared somewhat anxious and shy, while Sun Meng seemed completely unfazed, casually flipping through the physiology textbook.
"You... I'm speechless. Are you serious? What are you even looking at?" Ziya remarked as he noticed Sun Meng intently staring at an image of male anatomy.
"What? It's a different era now; you're so outdated. To me, they're just a bunch of hot-headed, heartless creatures of the opposite sex."
"What the hell are you saying?" Sun Meng's loud voice drew the ire of nearby boys, one of whom threw a book directly at him.
Sun Meng dodged but ended up hitting Ziya instead. "What do you think you're doing? You want to fight? Come on!" Sun Meng rolled up his sleeves and stood up, glaring fiercely at the boy.
"Fight! Fight!" The classmates cheered and shouted in excitement.
"You little brat, if I don't knock you down today, I won't believe it," the boy shouted back, emboldened by his peers.
"Do it! If you dare, try hitting her," Ziya called out calmly. To everyone's surprise, the boy took two steps back in fear, remaining silent despite his classmates' taunts.
"Calling you a coward isn't wrong; even a girl scares you." Another boy with a buzz cut looked down on the intimidated boy, glaring at Ziya and Sun Meng as if he wanted to take revenge for his friend.
Just as Ziya was about to say something, the boy who had been sitting suddenly sprang up and swiftly punched the complaining boy in the face.
"Do you think I'm a coward? I can beat you to the ground, believe it or not!" The boy's nose suddenly gushed blood, causing the girl next to him to scream in shock.
Ziya gestured for Sun Meng to go to the storage room and get a towel to dampen with cold water, applying it to the back of the bleeding boy's neck. The bleeding stopped, and Zhiqing entered with a stack of textbooks.
"Today's physiology lesson is self-study. It's not a key subject anyway; everyone knows that. The teacher is too busy, so we'll probably have to learn this on our own."
After saying that, Zhiqing sat down at her desk. The boy with the bleeding nose was her deskmate. "What happened to you?" Zhiqing signaled for Ziya and Sun Meng to return to their seats.
"Nothing, just an accident," the boy replied, his voice muffled due to his stuffed nose.
The self-study class ended in boredom, and while other students left the classroom, four remained behind to discuss their night exploration plans.
"What exactly is Yellow Crane Tower?" Ziya asked as he sat at his desk, looking at Zhiqing and Wang Yuan who had come over.
"Yellow Crane Tower was the site of a bloody battle long ago where many people died—men, women, and children... It was during a chaotic time when Nationalist soldiers were fighting against the Japanese. There were several groups who didn't know who was friend or foe and just fired indiscriminately. The local villagers were terrified; whenever they heard gunfire, they would hide any way they could. On that day, some soldiers arrived in the area, causing panic among the villagers who ran in all directions. In the chaos, many were shot. Those who had taken refuge in Yellow Crane Tower should have been safe, but one soldier heard a baby crying inside and rushed in with others. They opened fire indiscriminately and killed everyone hiding there. Later, when people came to collect the bodies, they never found any baby. It was said that it was a Ghost Baby that lured those bad soldiers to kill innocent villagers."
"Oh." As they listened, the three felt a heavy weight in their hearts, imagining the fear of those villagers hiding in Yellow Crane Tower and the tragedy of being shot down.
"Afterward, villagers began hearing cries and voices coming from Yellow Crane Tower. People became afraid to go near it; some claimed they saw someone peering over the railing of the tower. When brave souls went to check inside, they found no one there, and those who entered often fell seriously ill," Zhiqing said, her face showing signs of fear.
