The three of them turned away from the riverbank after a wave of nausea, not wanting to linger in the water for even a moment. They couldn't help but think about the maggots crawling out from the corpses, rolling around in the water, some possibly even swallowed whole. However, the chances of that happening were slim; usually, when these maggots fell into the water, they would be quickly devoured by small fish, who would bubble up as they gulped down this rich meal.
Chun Ni felt something wriggling on her thigh, and it felt cold. Her heart raced with anxiety as she hurriedly looked down, only to be horrified at what she saw.
"Oh my god..." Chun Ni screamed, causing Severe Cold and Dog Wazi to turn their heads. To their shock, there was a large leech wriggling on her thigh. Before they could react, Chun Ni lost her balance out of fear and fell into a puddle beside the riverbank. This puddle was an emergency reservoir used when the riverbed dried up; it collected water automatically from the river and was about a meter deep. Given Chun Ni's height, she could easily climb back up.
Severe Cold and Dog Wazi found it hilarious that Chun Ni had fallen into the puddle. After a fit of laughter, they suddenly felt something was off; Chun Ni had been down there for a while now—why hadn’t she surfaced yet?
They quickly crouched down at the edge of the puddle to look inside. Apart from the rippling water, there was no sign of Chun Ni...
As Chun Ni fell into the puddle, she felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness as she drifted downward. The moment her body touched the water's surface startled her, triggering instinctive struggles. She reminded herself that she could swim and that falling into the water wasn't such a big deal.
At the same time, Chun Ni clearly understood that the water level in this puddle wasn’t deep; at most, it would only reach her chest if she stood up straight. With this thought calming her down slightly, she attempted to stand upright and grab onto the edge of the puddle to climb out. Just as she was pushing herself up with her arms against the stones, gentle ripples began to spread across the surface of the water...
Chun Ni wondered if it was just the wind stirring up the surface. She looked up but felt no breeze blowing down at her. Turning back to glance at the water's surface, she saw dark shapes emerging as it rippled.
As she watched those black waves expand like an invisible entity on the surface, she suddenly saw a head break through... One second... two seconds... a pale face without eyeballs emerged from beneath the water.
"Oh my god... help me..." Chun Ni shouted towards her brother and Severe Cold above. As she called out, she scrambled to climb higher, but right after that head appeared from the surface, a pair of ghostly white hands followed...
Chun Ni was paralyzed with fear as her limbs turned soft and unresponsive.
Suddenly, from the bottom of the puddle, a female ghost climbed up at an alarming speed and grabbed Chun Ni by her heel. A bone-chilling cold surged through her body from where the ghost held her foot, freezing her in place so that she couldn’t move at all...
Chun Ni was pulled under. She surfaced with a gasp for air, desperately trying to escape the ghost's grip... but was dragged back down again. As she struggled in the water, countless bubbles erupted on the surface... The ghost’s face was pale and devoid of clothing... Its decaying hands clutched Chun Ni tightly as it pulled her deeper into the depths...
Water choked Chun Ni's lungs, and she felt a sharp pain radiating from them. A sense of weakness spread through her fingers and toes, her body feeling as heavy as a lump of iron. Her consciousness began to drift away, becoming increasingly hazy... The ghastly smile of a female ghost filled her vision... Bubbles erupted from Chun Ni's mouth as she sank... According to the local saying in the Village, those who drown in weak waters will seek a substitute within half a month, and this female corpse was the one that Dog Wazi had fished out; she had found Chun Ni to take her place...
Severe Cold and Dog Wazi noticed that Chun Ni was missing and found it quite strange. Without a second thought, they hurriedly shouted for help. The children playing by the Riverbank and some adults working in the fields heard about the incident by the river and rushed over.
“Chun Ni fell into the well; we saw her drop!” Dog Wazi shouted loudly.
“What are you standing there for? Go check it out!” someone yelled. Just as Severe Cold was about to jump down, a pair of strong hands pulled him back.
Without hesitation, two adults climbed down the stones at the edge of the well. Severe Cold and the other kids anxiously watched as the adults moved step by step into the water below.
Severe Cold saw the two adults sink to the bottom; the water wasn't deep, only reaching their waists when they stood. No matter how they searched, they could not find any sign of Chun Ni.
“There's no one here! You must be mistaken!” The two adults looked up at the well opening and called out to Severe Cold and Dog Wazi. Their voices echoed in Severe Cold's ears, leaving both children stunned... How could Chun Ni have disappeared?
“It can't be! She's right below; you need to look more carefully!” Dog Wazi was on the verge of tears, pleading with them.
Seeing their distress, the two adults had no choice but to lean down again and reach into the water. Everyone anxiously watched as they tried to retrieve Chun Ni. A few timid girls were too scared to stay there; upon seeing that their efforts were fruitless, they wanted to leave.
As the girls turned to leave, one casually glanced back and exclaimed, “Hey! What’s that floating over there?”
“Stop messing around; get out of here!” Severe Cold scolded the girl loudly.
The girl was too frightened to speak, but her gaze remained fixed on the object drifting in the water. The closer it got, the more it resembled a person.
The search in the well yielded nothing. The two adults sighed and shouted towards the well opening, "You see, we've searched countless times, and no one is here—just no one."
Severe Cold and Dog Wazi looked on gloomily, disappointed as they watched the two adults climb back up from the well. Meanwhile, the girls had run down to the riverbank, screaming and shouting about something.
Severe Cold was also caught up in their excitement and quickly propped himself up to look down at the riverbank where the girls were running. Sure enough, an object was floating on the turbulent water.
"Let's go see what it is!" Severe Cold called out to Dog Wazi as they both dashed down the riverbank to catch up with the girls.
The two adults who had just climbed out of the well looked curiously at the now deserted well opening, where just moments ago there had been a crowd.
"They're over there," one adult said, scanning the downstream area of the river.
Severe Cold and Dog Wazi ran swiftly and soon caught up with the shouting girls. Without a second thought, they leaped into the water because they saw that what was floating was a person...
