Sun Guiying was a cleaner in the town, and during the busy farming season, she would swap shifts with her colleagues to help out at home. While working, she met a renowned Incense Master, known for his ability to see Demon Gods from miles away. Sun Guiying was so fascinated by the Demon Gods that she would have worshipped them if not for her daughter’s urgent words. Without a second thought, she hurried to the town, eager to invite the Incense Master to perform a ritual to drive away the spirits and help her son wake up.
Sun Guiying was frugal, saving every penny she could. She reluctantly handed over her meager savings to the Incense Master, who insisted on taking it.
The Incense Master quickly made her way to Dog Wazi's house after receiving the money. News of her presence spread rapidly throughout the town, attracting curious onlookers eager to witness the event. It was said that this Incense Master could journey to the underworld and negotiate with the Vengeful Spirit that had been haunting Dog Wazi, persuading it to release him.
The Incense Master was a woman in her forties, with a stout figure reminiscent of a cuddly panda. She wore a light yellow cloth bag slung over her shoulder, similar to those carried by elderly practitioners. As she approached Dog Wazi's bedroom amidst a crowd of followers, she suddenly stopped at the doorway.
"I hear a woman crying in your son's room," she announced, causing those trailing behind her to scatter in fear, some rushing toward the exit. Sun Guiying held her breath, obediently following the commands of this well-known Incense Master.
"Bring me a wooden basin and gather anything related to female ghosts," the Incense Master instructed in a serious tone.
Chun Ni hurriedly searched through the trash pile for clothes at her mother's urging. Sun Guiying took the clothes, shook off the dirt, and handed them to the Incense Master while instructing others to find Severe Cold and his companions who were hiding at home.
Once Severe Cold and his friends arrived, several women assisted in filling a basin with hot water after listening to the Incense Master's lengthy instructions. The Incense Master then produced a bottle of liquid resembling orange juice from her bag, said to be Celestial Water.
The women gathered around the Incense Master, intrigued by what she had to say. After asking Severe Cold about relevant details, she sprayed some of the yellow liquid onto Dog Wazi's father, indicating that this holy water would protect him from harm by any female ghost.
Severe Cold was skeptical; if there was nothing in Dog Wazi's bedroom, why had they both been terrified during their previous visits? The oppressive atmosphere inside that room was hard to explain. Moreover, this incident had even caused Erwa to wet himself...
As Severe Cold pondered these thoughts, Dog Wazi's father emerged holding a hundred-dollar bill. He handed it over to the Incense Master before stepping aside. A group of women surrounded the Incense Master with reverence as if hoping to absorb some of her mystical aura. The Incense Master maintained an air of confidence and authority amidst them.
The clothing draped over the legs of the Incense Master as she stepped into the basin, taking a swig from the pale yellow Celestial Water she retrieved from her pouch. At that moment, the Incense Master became the focal point of everyone's attention.
All eyes were fixed on the Incense Master, who had her eyes closed and head bowed, her legs trembling uncontrollably. Water splashed around in the basin, causing Severe Cold's heart to race. The hair on the back of his neck stood up. Though her head was tilted in a way that obscured her expression, intermittent sounds could be heard.
However, the voice was not entirely hers; it came out as a series of disjointed murmurs that sent chills down spines. The nearby women whispered that a Vengeful Spirit had possessed her, adding to the eerie atmosphere.
A bold child managed to break free from their parent's embrace and ran under the Incense Master's tilted head for a closer look. The child, around four or five years old, glanced up and then hurried back to their mother in fright.
"Mommy, that person's mouth isn't moving," the child's innocent voice cut through the tense atmosphere, causing some to stifle nervous laughter while others remained anxious. The child's parent quickly pulled them close, fearing they might run off again.
The child's words reached Severe Cold's ears, leaving him puzzled. Why did the voice of the female corpse sound so strange? It was raspy and seemed to come from someone in great pain, as if they were being choked and could only manage weak, intermittent sounds. This unnerving noise made everyone present feel goosebumps.
"My name is Xiaolan. I was forced into an arranged marriage by my family. In a fit of anger, I took my own life and ended up here, only to be kidnapped and violated... Now I am alone and hope to form a Yin Marriage with the first man who sees me."
The gradually fading voice transformed into that of a young woman, evoking a wave of sympathy among those present… They dared not speak loudly.
Initially, Severe Cold dismissed it; how could someone so disfigured claim to have been violated? He scoffed quietly to himself. But then he clearly heard her desire for marriage… Sweat began to bead on his forehead as he realized he was the first to see her hidden parts. Moments later, the Incense Master pointed out Dog Wazi as her intended for the Yin Marriage.
Phew… Severe Cold let out a sigh of relief.
After a while, the Incense Master began to shake violently again, her body trembling like chaff in the wind. After what sounded like a hiccup, she opened her eyes and looked around, asking if everyone had heard clearly.
Sun Guiying quickly replied, "We heard you loud and clear! We will arrange the marriage immediately; just tell us what you need."
The Incense Master kept twisting his plump body, a large head resting on his shoulders, nearly obscuring his neck. "Paper Horse, Paper Figurine, Ghost Money... everything must be prepared. These are items for the dead. For the living, we need one rooster, one pig's head, and two Fresh Fish. Paper-made refrigerators, televisions, and so on... not a single detail can be neglected. You cannot be careless with Vengeful Spirits. If you want to save your son, you must be willing to spend this little money."
"Yes, yes... we understand," Dog Wazi's parents nodded earnestly, like chickens pecking at rice.
After everyone had seen the Incense Master off, the adults finally turned to listen to the three children’s fragmented accounts of the female corpse by the river. They rushed to see if there were any other corpses, but it had already been swept away by the rising waters during the night.
