Sun Meng's words left Ziya speechless. She looked weakly at her emotionally charged friend, feeling powerless to argue against Sun Meng. But if Severe Cold doubted her like this, it was truly unfair!
"I’m telling you, I didn’t do any of this. Do you believe me?" Ziya said, her pale lips trembling as she suppressed the grievance inside and looked at the two of them.
Severe Cold noticed the moisture glimmering in Ziya's eyes and felt a pang of sympathy. "Why wouldn’t I believe you? Even if I don’t, I still need to find evidence that makes me doubt you," he replied. He hadn’t expected that just a few days apart would leave Ziya looking haggard, with dark circles overshadowing her once-bright eyes. He couldn’t fathom what had happened to her.
Sun Meng’s usually lively demeanor turned cold as she gazed at Ziya, her tone laden with meaning. "If it wasn’t you, then is there someone else in this room?"
Ziya genuinely didn’t want to lose a friend like Sun Meng, who had grown up with her, but how could she explain everything? "Maybe I shouldn’t have written ghost stories in this house. Ever since I stepped inside, so many unbelievable things have happened. I didn’t want to say anything, but now I have to speak up to prove I’m not lying."
"What happened?" Severe Cold asked, startled and eager for details. Sun Meng also looked surprised as she turned her attention to Ziya, realizing her earlier tone might have been too harsh. She quickly poured a glass of water for Ziya and sat quietly by the bed, waiting for her to share.
"On my first night, when I made instant noodles, there were weevils in it... Later, I found a cake in the fridge and ate some... Then I saw black thread-like worms on it... When I checked the other cakes in the fridge later, they were all gone— even the plates were missing... The door would open by itself at midnight... And when I first entered this bedroom... I saw a woman without a chin in the mirror... Then when I went downstairs, I got scratched by Shuangshuang and the cat..."
"So you poisoned it, right?" Sun Meng interrupted Ziya excitedly.
"No... that's not how it happened! I didn’t poison Shuangshuang..." Ziya finally couldn’t hold back the tears that filled her eyes; they streamed down her cheeks.
"Don’t cry..." Severe Cold wiped away Ziya's tears with a tissue and looked at Sun Meng firmly. "Sun Meng, please be patient and let Ziya finish her story!"
Ziya nodded with a pale face as she took the tissue from Severe Cold and continued. "In the few days I've been here, I've only eaten a bag of dried tofu. When I wanted to go downstairs to make porridge, I noticed Shuangshuang didn’t attack me. Feeling strange, I searched around and found it dead under the stairs, so I..."
"Then why didn’t you tell me right away? What were you planning by hiding it in the Storage Room?" Sun Meng’s aggressive demeanor shocked Ziya; she had never acted like this before. But then again, considering everything Sun Meng had been through lately, it was somewhat understandable…
"I wanted to tell you too, but I was afraid Ms. Tan couldn't handle the blow, so I just put it aside in the Storage Room for now, without thinking too much about it."
"Are you hungry? How about we go out and grab something to eat? As for that dog, we'll figure out another way to explain things to Ms. Tan," Severe Cold said the first part of his sentence to Ziya and the latter part to Sun Meng.
"I'm not really in the mood to eat right now..." Ziya furrowed her brow, suddenly recalling something. She turned to Severe Cold and said, "There's something on the desk you should take a look at."
"What is it?" Severe Cold propped himself up and quickly walked over to the desk. He picked up a Brown Envelope and waved it at Ziya. "Is this it?"
Ziya nodded. Her pale cheeks evoked a sense of pity in others as she leaned back against the pillow, closing her eyes wearily.
Sun Meng then moved the trash bin Ziya mentioned to check if there were any remnants of cake inside. The cake had long since crumbled and diluted at the bottom of the bin.
Severe Cold opened Ziya's laptop and inserted a CD. After a flurry of mixed snowflakes on the screen, an image appeared of a Woman in a Wheelchair from behind. Staring at this bizarre silhouette on the page, Severe Cold fell into deep thought.
Just then, Sun Meng managed to prop herself up on the edge of the desk and caught sight of the screen. "I recognize this woman..." Ziya and Severe Cold were startled by Sun Meng's sudden exclamation, both of them nervously staring at her.
"This woman was the previous mistress of this villa; Ms. Tan told me about her. She... she committed suicide," Sun Meng said, her voice trembling with fear.
Upon hearing this, Ziya felt her hair stand on end, her pores prickling as if thousands of ants were biting her; it was unbearable... Her heart quivered as well... No way! The woman who appeared in the mirror was this chinless figure...
"Are you sure?" Severe Cold asked, his thick brows furrowed as he fixed an intense gaze on Sun Meng.
"Yes... I'm sure... I told Ziya not to write those things, but she still quietly wrote them... I think I should go to the hospital! You two stay here... Or Ziya, why don't you go back to City A? Let Severe Cold take you..." Sun Meng stammered in fear, her body trembling in varying degrees.
"No... I'm not leaving. I'm just curious to see what this woman without a chin plans to do with me," Ziya said in a calm tone, his expression resolute.
"You really aren't leaving? That's fine, I'll keep you company," Severe Cold replied as he shut down the computer, carefully putting the CD back into the Brown Envelope while watching Ziya.
"Uh... you guys are crazy. Well, I'm heading back to the hospital. Take care of yourselves and good luck!" Sun Meng said, hastily gathering her things before rushing downstairs.
"Can you get up? How about we take a walk outside?" Severe Cold gently suggested to Ziya, feeling uneasy after almost ruining Ziya's image in his mind just moments ago.
"I'm afraid I don't have the strength to walk; I just want some millet porridge or something," Ziya said with a faint smile.
"Okay, I'll go downstairs and make you some porridge. You should close your eyes and rest for a bit; we need to deal with this dead dog's body first."
"Thanks..." Ziya managed a shallow smile, feeling utterly exhausted and as if his body were falling apart. He pressed his lips together, tasting a hint of bitterness. "Did you guys put any medicine in the cup earlier?"
"Um, I don't think so! Are you feeling unwell from something?" Severe Cold paused, realizing that the cup had been prepared by Sun Meng. Perhaps she added some anti-inflammatory medication. Remembering that he had cold medicine in the car, he added, "I have Aspirin and some cold medicine like Gan Kang in my car; I'll grab that for you too."
"Uh... it's just a bitter taste that makes my lips numb; nothing else is wrong."
