Ziya felt a deep ache throughout her body, overwhelmed by fatigue that made her reluctant to move. Her throat burned as if it were on fire, and she sensed an unbearable heat surrounding her. It felt as though a great blaze was raging around her, crackling and popping in her ears.
Her mouth was parched, and as the fire within her subsided, she imagined herself in a vast, desolate desert. In this endless expanse of sand, Ziya felt incredibly small and fragile, as if she could be easily crushed.
With a flushed face, Ziya threw off the covers that weighed heavily upon her. The internal heat threatened to melt her away. She clutched the bedsheet tightly with her fingers, softly moaning and mumbling to herself.
Her phone vibrated incessantly, ringing repeatedly, but everything felt distant and vague to Ziya. She exhaled hot breaths through her nose and kept licking her cracked lips. Her eyes were bloodshot, red like the eyes of an all-white rabbit.
Struggling to crawl across the white sands of the desert, Ziya suddenly spotted a shimmering blue spring ahead. She crawled eagerly to the edge of the spring, greedily gulping down the refreshing water.
"I don't know how she got this sick. Look at this... I'm so sorry to trouble you..." Sun Meng murmured as she accepted the cup from Severe Cold.
Severe Cold gently placed a damp towel on Ziya's forehead, tenderly brushing back her bangs. She slid another pillow under Ziya's neck to elevate her head slightly, hoping to make her more comfortable.
"If it weren't for the phone going unanswered, I wouldn't have known she had a fever. Luckily I found you; otherwise, it could have been a disaster."
"I... I was just about to come back to check on her when you found me," Sun Meng said, avoiding Severe Cold's piercing gaze as she tried to explain herself.
"Alright! Check the thermometer. If the fever doesn't go down, we’ll have to take her to the hospital," Severe Cold said as she retrieved the thermometer from under Ziya's arm and handed it to Sun Meng.
Sun Meng held the thermometer up to the light by the window and finally sighed in relief. "It's gone down! Thank goodness; I was so scared." She then looked at Severe Cold and added, "If you have something to do, go ahead. I'll stay with her..."
"Uh... okay! But really, there's nothing urgent. How about you go to the hospital? I'll stay here with her for a bit..." Severe Cold hesitated to leave immediately, tucking Ziya in snugly without any intention of departing just yet.
"Uh... you stay here, I'll go check on those two little ones." Sun Meng found it difficult to directly chase Severe Cold away. Since she was so eager to help Ziya, it wouldn't be right to refuse her. Otherwise, if Ziya woke up, she would definitely...
Severe Cold watched as Sun Meng stepped outside, followed by her calling for Shuangshuang and Little Catfish.
At that moment, Ziya's sleeping posture had normalized, her breathing evened out, and her rosy cheeks gradually returned to their pale complexion. Her long eyelashes drooped over her eyelids. However, her brows occasionally furrowed tightly, and the muscles in her face twitched, while beads of sweat formed on her forehead.
Severe Cold thought this was a normal reaction after Ziya had a fever; as long as she was sweating, everything would be fine. She privately speculated that Ziya must have neglected to put on more clothes at night, which led to her catching a cold. She picked up a tissue to wipe the sweat from Ziya's forehead.
"Don't... don't come over..." Ziya suddenly pushed Severe Cold's hand away and screamed in a frantic voice. Then she collapsed heavily back onto the bed, twisting her brows in pain as she fell into a troubled sleep.
Severe Cold sensed something was wrong. If this were just an ordinary cold, why would there be such a chain reaction as if she had been frightened? Just then, the door swung open as Sun Meng rushed in, looking panicked. "It's bad! Shuangshuang is dead... she was poisoned by Ziya..."
Upon hearing Sun Meng's words, Severe Cold instinctively trembled and asked in a low voice, "How is that possible? Ziya is a kind person; she would never kill a cute pet dog!"
"It's absolutely true! Just look at Shuangshuang's body and you'll know. When I came back the day before yesterday, she said Shuangshuang bit her finger. At that time, I never thought Ziya would actually kill a pet dog that can't even speak..." Sun Meng's troubled expression made Severe Cold's heart tighten. How could Ziya...
Sun Meng placed the corpse of the pet dog in front of Severe Cold, who carefully examined the dead dog's condition and confirmed it was indeed poisoned. "Where's Shuangshuang's bowl?" Severe Cold turned to look at the still-sleeping Ziya before turning back to Sun Meng.
"I searched everywhere but couldn't find the plastic bowl that was specifically for feeding Shuangshuang. Maybe Ziya threw it away! What are we going to do now? Ms. Tan will definitely worsen if she finds out Shuangshuang is dead."
"Calm down! You can't just conclude that Ziya poisoned Shuangshuang without any evidence. Let's wait until she wakes up before discussing this!" Severe Cold gestured for Sun Meng to calm down and not say such things at Ziya's door.
"Cough cough... what are you two talking about?" In the end, Ziya was awakened by their conversation. She propped herself up weakly and asked groggily.
Hastily, he rushed in to support her, saying, "It's nothing, you just keep lying down, look at you..."
"Ziya, how could you let Shuangshuang die? What am I supposed to do now?" Sun Meng disregarded Severe Cold's obstruction and stepped forward, questioning loudly.
Ziya struggled to lift her head, her gaze wandering between the two of them as if she were trying hard to comprehend the situation. Then she asked, "When did you both come in? Die? What are you talking about? Shuangshuang... cough cough... it was fine..." Before she could finish her sentence, Ziya suddenly remembered that Shuangshuang had died last night, and she had completely forgotten. Realizing this, she hurriedly added, "Shuangshuang is dead; I took it to the Storage Room... I don't know..." Ziya weakly recounted.
"Enough! Ziya, who are you putting on this pitiful act for? You want our sympathy, right? Well, let me tell you, you've succeeded... but Shuangshuang was just a pet dog that couldn't speak! How could you do this..." Sun Meng exclaimed emotionally, her voice choked with tears as she berated Ziya.
It was no wonder; a nursing intern could not afford to make any mistakes during their training. If they were reported by the family, it would be treated as incompetence. This would create significant obstacles for future job placements. These interns had to perform perfectly from the start; achieving full marks would ensure a worry-free future.
"Ziya, did you do this?" Severe Cold asked Ziya with a mix of concern and sorrow in his eyes. He couldn't stand the sight of tears from girls; seeing Sun Meng crying made him feel increasingly irritated. He thought to himself that if Ziya really did this, it would be terrifying—such a seemingly delicate and quiet girl harboring such intentions would mean he had truly misjudged her.
